Legit curious if Jim Henson saw a frogmouth or other nightjar in a book or documentary at some point in his early life.

I knew kingfishers dove to get their food, just never realized that they jumped out of the water to take back off. I thought it was more of a skim the top of the water thing.

It’s a super cool finding, but unfortunately only makes sons so it’s probably not going to be a magic bullet for increasing the population.

I feel like a lot of folks in this thread knew already, but it was only yesterday that I learned that what I thought bald eagles sounded like was actually a big lie resulting from bald eagles often being dubbed over with the sound of a red-tailed hawk in movies and TV, and that in reality bald eagles actually kind of sound like squeaky toys. Also, while pulling up that first video, I also happened upon this one of a mixed bird family.

They are very majestic birds, even if they chirp and eat garbage. A while back I was driving down the highway and had this moment of driving directly behind a juvenile bald eagle in flight at my eye level before it flew up and out of sight. Very exciting, incredibly impressive to be that close to a huge bird in the air. It had been on the road picking at some roadkill with a flock of crows.

Of course, I had no loving idea what it was and said,” what the gently caress was that?” And my Lyft driver said,” you saw it too?” I spent my break looking up what it was and found out that Crested Caracaras are pretty cool. They hang out with just about any scavenger and it’s common to see families of Crested caracaras chillin’ with families of black vultures, all peacefully sharing a meal of desiccated animal corpse. Not where I am, since they aren’t super common here yet, but in areas where they have already populated. Bored has a new favorite as of 01:15 on Nov 12, 2021 |

Found a news article about it: https://www.usnews.com/news/world-report/articles/2019-05-10/extinct-bird-re-evolved-itself-back-into-existence-on-island-in-seychelles The short notes are that an island in the Seychelles was wiped of all life 135.000 years ago. Then 20.000 ago years it was recolonized by the same bird species that had previously colonized it. Since the ecological constraints on the island hadn't changed, the recolonizing bird species evolved, over a span of 20.000 years, to optimally live under those constraints which also made it look almost identical to the previous island bird species, according to fossil record.
