You know how Flair saying "Mean Gene' is amazing, I love how David Penzer introduces Sting. Penzer is not a name I hear much about in terms of praise but he was really good. edogawa rando posted:Scott Steiner should definitely be in the conversation as someone who was elevated by being in the nWo, going from a tag team guy to a bonafide singles star. Norton, I suppose, benefited in Japan from his association with the nWo, seeing how he got an IWGP Heavyweight title run out of it. I was just watching his matches with Page and they were good but the crowd made them great. The Cult of Sting was real. I think I remember hearing that Flair vs. Hogan wasn't a bigger deal in WWF because, in the minds of Hogan or the bookers, Flair was just a "regional" star. I think WWF always thought of Flair and Sting as just big fish in little ponds but they were mega stars and the crowd loved them everywhere. I wonder how much it bothers Vince, Hunter, etc that they weren't able to kill off Sting when they had him for a year or so and now he's doing good work in AEW.

Hunter actually winning aside, one of my biggest memories from that match was Sting breaking HHH's hammer and looming large over him. That and Scott Hall bumping. But yeah, even a relatively normal person in Vince's position might have trouble looking back at the Monday Night Wars objectively. With a narcissist like Vince there is no chance whatsoever. Having some pomp and circumstance before a big match definitely helps put it over the top as a big deal. Ultimately the booking also needs to back up the importance of the match for it to work, so it wouldn't make the Queen of the Ring or whatever matter, but a special ring announcer or ceremony before Kenny/Hangman would help make it feel even more special.

The Fink was one of the greatest ring announcers ever* but Buffer just elevates everything to Super Card status and it rules. *https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4b4QL0tDQk Tony Chimel gets a nod for his Edge intros.

I don't have much of a problem with Michael Buffer himself, but when they brought him out for a Nitro main event that was always going to end with WEREOUTOFTIMESEEYOUONTHUNDER, idk it just didn't work for me.

Buffer was fine they just overused him and yeah after a while the main event scene being the mess that it was made the whole thing worse. Wasn’t buffer’s fault, to be sure, just how it was at that point
