This one never got a dub, right? Only the OVA series got the dub and apparently there's also a second dub that used a bunch of different VAs to redo the fourth episode on one of the Japanese Blu-Rays due to how convoluted the Harmony Gold situation was.

Granted it's been a while but I remember the movie being way better than the OAV Still not used to Macross being free from Harmony Gold BS but this makes sense even if I'd want 7 more than Plus (Yes I know 7 has other issues in licensing)

They do but Harmony Gold and Big West signed a deal which allows the Japanese studios to bring the rest of Macross over world wide. Which is what should of been done like years ago but Harmony Gold gonna Harmony Gold. I'm not a huge fan of Harmony Gold keeping any rights cause Harmony Gold is bad (not just for dicking over Macross but they've squandered Robotech itself as property) but this probably was the best outcome even if (if rumors are true) it took quite a few bigger companies leaning on Harmony Gold to actually settle

There are individual scenes and edits in the movie that are better than the OVA but the script and pacing of the original story was still very much intended to be a something far longer than the 2 hour runtime of the movie (even though it was originally pitched as a movie), which has the effect of making it feel extremely rushed. Really the best version is to watch the first three episodes of the OVA and then switch to the movie for the episode 4 events and even that results in skipping parts like Information High so it's only arguably better.

The solution is to just watch the entire OAV and then watch the movie version after, like everyone did in the 90s, because that's the order they came out.
