A while back I bought an analog Explorer LR4 on a whim when it was on blowout for 130 bucks. I slapped a crossfire setup on it that had been sitting in my shop doing nothing and after finally getting that working it’s best with the latest firmware I am having a blast with this little thing. I previously had zero interest in long range but going out and back a couple miles is a huge thrill. I printed a Session mount for it and it actually takes pretty good footage. I have some LiIon packs on the way for it, I want to get out and back 5km…will have to drop the Session for that obviously.

Do any of you guys use a cuav v5 nano and/or a radiolink AT9S Pro transmitter with an R9DS receiver? I built a kit and although I believe I've soldered and wired everything correctly, I can't get it to arm. The transmitter is showing 4 bars that disappear when the drone is unplugged from the battery. . I believe this means the receiver is bound to the transmitter. But I can't get the motors to spin. The props haven't been attached yet. I do not yet know if the motors spin in the correct direction - they do not spin at all. I went through the steps in the assembly instructions leading up to arming the transmitter a few times. . But my step 5 is different because I have a v5 nano instead of the apm 2.8 that came with the kit. But that shouldn't effect the transmitter's arming. I think. I followed the directions but it feels like I missed a step. There's a safety button on the GPS. Pushing the button can give either three tones or two tones. I don't know which one means "armed." Or maybe is it like a DJI product where you have to press the button twice? The manufacturers documentation https://doc.cuav.net/flight-controller/v5-autopilot/en/v5-nano.html doesn't mention anything about the gps safety button. I deviated from the manufacturers instructions with one piece of hardware and now I don't know what to do. Are there some generic 1st time setup steps I could follow?

I'm not super experienced. Your arming switch could be on a different output/input than expected. Can you hook the receiver up to a computer, to confirm current settings for arming, that the gyros are working and reading level when level, what angle inhibits arming, etc?

Thank You! edit: I didn't know that pixhawks shipped without firmware. I wonder if that's what my problem is. 2edit: Can anyone confirm, https://firmware.ardupilot.org/Copter/stable/CUAVv5Nano/ is the correct download "arducopter_with_bl.hex"? If the accelerometers are working does that mean it already has firmware on it? I got a warning message that updating the bootloader can brick your board and I chickened out. You will need to load the appropriate firmware for just about any pixhawk. I strongly suggest doing a lot more research and reading.

I agree with you. Right now it feels like this vehicle is never going to take-off. I don't believe I even know of all the things I don't know. Right now I'm reading https://ardupilot.org/planner/docs/common-loading-firmware-onto-pixhawk.html and will probably be for a while. It's funny. When I first started I thought the soldering would be the most difficult part. edit: What wiki page do I read to diagnose this error? 2edit: It turns out the correct file was "arducopter.apj" not "arducopter.hex" hooray. So far I've been able to upload firmware and calibrate accelerometers and compass. 3edit: And I'm lost again. If this were a dji drone and the motors were spinning the right way and there was gps lock I would probably take off. Somehow I have a vague uneasy feeling like that wouldn't yet be prudent. Bizarrely incomplete documentation, finicky everything, and hordes of posts on forums describing problems that if you're lucky maybe end with "Hey I fixed it" and no explanation of how. I had a Matek f405 board I got to try and get a plane flying stable enough to let my 76 year old father take a spin on the controls. It mostly worked, but I was running inav firmware which was modern and easy to set up. A while ago I got the urge to slap it onto an RC car and run the Ardupilot rover firmware. It took at least 5 days just to get it moving around. That mission planner software is the jankiest piece of janky poo poo that ever janked. The loving thing still doesn't have an arm/disarm because the stability system refuses to let it work (Giving you the gloriously unhelpful error message 'MAV refused command') It gets a perfectly fine GPS lock and everything is calibrated, it will even run all auto functions. But arm/disarm? gently caress outta here, AHRS unhealthy. It mostly works, and it's fun to gently caress about with but half the time it still refuses to work after turning everything on for mysterious reasons.

I am a living Dunning-Kruger example. I haven't gotten to the genuinely confusing/frustrating stuff. I don't know how long it would have taken me to figure out that I needed to flash the firmware on the flight controller. I mean, I guess you wouldn't expect an arduino to come with a program already on it, and a pixhawk is an arduino, so one shouldn't expect it to ship empty. I guess it makes sense. But I don't get why there would be .hex files uploaded for hardware that can't use them - unless there's a different version of this specific FC that requires .hex files and can't use .apj. It probably speaks to my lack of knowledge that I would assume there's only one kind of CUAV v5 nano. I'm finding out that there's a lot of basic newbie stuff that one might not think of at first glance. For example carbon fiber is a conductor and you can't just leave your RX antenna in contact with your frame and expect good reception. You have to separate them, so be prepared to spend $0.35 on a 3D printed antenna stand from China if you didn't know that already. I wish I could help you, but I didn't even know what AHRS is until I googled it just now and have you tried calibrating your compass outside? I can't remember where I read it specifically but calibrations done indoors not working outdoors is A Thing That Happens Sometimes.

i own every Bionicle posted:can autorotate with a power system failure, I don’t want to defend the bazingas here but my guess as to why it has 8 props instead of 4 is because it has two redundant power systems and in the event of a failure of one, the other one can take over and either fly, or if it isn’t powerful enough to sustain a hover, will slow the descent to something survivable, much like a footer going into autorotation. I say this only because when you see a big drone carrying a $90,000 Hollywood-quality camera, that’s exactly why they have two sets of motors and props. Actually for a flying toy again to a motorcycle it probably is better for the same reasons multirotors have gotten popular with RC/fpv hobbyists. And having hosed around with quads, hexes, and octos, I agree WRT the safety of octos. Quads will always crash with a motor out, hexes are quite likely to crash with a motor out, but octos aren’t too bad.

Bought a used mavic and Im loving it, but now i caught the fpv bug and im starting to see were else i can spend my money. I was thinking about buying a cetus fpv kit. Anyone has one that can give me feedback ? I also found this on the facebook market near me, would this be better than the cetus kit? I would at least have a controller that i can use with other drones. 160€

The transmitter is fine to start with (though beware that these newer models with ACCESS firmware won't support D8 protocol without an external module, which may be relevant if you're looking at buying any EMAX products in the future). The goggles are probably awful, and if they're anything like the VR006's I started with, really uncomfortable too. The quad itself looks like it's from 2017-2018 based on its design (micros were really dense with huge motors and tiny props back then) and those batteries should be presumed to be worn out. I would be surprised if it had anything remotely modern like an F4 board, OSD, or SmartAudio/Tramp. Probably still way more fun to fly than a brushed whoop like the Cetus though. Don't forget a LiPo charger (something configurable with a display, bare minimum. IMAX B6 V2 or ToolkitRC M6 are the cheapest worthwhile ones I know of). Since the batteries are XT30, you'll need some way to adapt them to XT60. They're easy to make if you can solder, but you can get them pre-built for not much more than the individual connectors themselves.

Yeah... I think that i'll go with the cetus kit. At least i know the state of the batteries and comes with a charger. It will give me some on hands experience and i can use the radio for the sim. Then if i still have the fpv bug and the money for it, i'll start to build my own kit starting with a tx16s transmitter and go from there.

Are OSD and gimbals "listen-only"? I have three peripherals that want to connect to telemetry ports and only two telemetry ports. My flight controller does not have a Serial 4/5 port. I've read it's possible to double up peripherals on one telemetry port; the documentation I've found suggests that I can have as many listening devices as I want on one port but only one transmitter per port. The three peripherals in question are a 3DR telemetry radio, OSD, and BCG gimbal. Would the correct thing to do be to put the telemetry radio on telem1 and double up the OSD and gimbal on telem2? Secondly, does anyone know where to get a female-ended Y cable? My flight controller uses custom connections instead of the stock/standard px4 cable ends and I believe it would be easier to stick something on the end of an existing telemetry cable than to splice into the middle of one. Obviously I'd rather just buy a Y cable intended for my FC but Lindy@cuav has stopped answering my E-mails.

Looking for some advise for picking up something for my son. He was given a cheap IR controlled Heli for his birthday earlier this year. He's run it into the ground figuratively and literally however, he really enjoys flying it. That being said I was looking for advice on probably a quadcopter or something a little better/easier to fly. Something with significantly more flight time than 5min. Price range ~100-130 probably. Saw a couple of 2nd hand DJI Mavics on ebay is that a decent start? I'm really in the dark here so any help is appreciated. A mavic is for shooting video and taking pictures. If that’s what he likes to do, then a used mavic mini is probably not a bad place to start. They’re hugely popular and well supported. If he likes to go fast, do flips and all that, then a mavic is not a good choice, they really aren’t meant for that

If you have a decent amount of room indoors the Blade helicopter line is decent. A trello is decent as well for under 100 too but those are both inside things. If you want outside you need power which means you need more money

I like the blades but transmitter alone was double the price of the heli. Not sure I want to dive down the hobby rabbit hole yet as he hasn't specifically said he wants to do this more. I like the tello. especially the programming aspect of it. Going to take a close look into this. As far as outside vs inside we don't have a ton of space inside. Although I live in AZ and it's relatively calm winds most days. I had a 20$ toy drone 4yrs ago I flew outside many times without issues. So maybe not a problem? Once again thanks for suggestions rc nerds.

FYI this is a good introductory kit for FPV drones. Comes with everything and the drone can be used inside on 1s and is usable outside on 2s. https://www.rcgeeks.co.uk/products/emax-tinyhawk-ii-fpv-racing-drone-rtf Sorry for the UK link but I don't know any RC shops in the US.
