I still maintain that it could be an intentional bit of misdirection, though as I've mentioned before ITT, I think it's pretty definitive that she's dead, since the Baron asks if Yueh wanted her to be set free so that Yueh could join her, and then proceeds to cut his head off - doesn't get much more explicit than that.

It's so weird that the track called Salusa Secundus isn't the throat singing in the movie. Was disappointed when I went to Hans Zimmer's channel.

Its possible that Wanna was only killed after Yuen went through with it. My read is that it's irrelevant, the spider is there to briefly establish "you really, really don't want to be a captive of the Harkonnens" and whether it literally is her or just could be her is irrelevant

I can't remember exactly how much the book reader knows about the Fremen agenda of re-greening Arrakis at that point in the story, but it was nice having a few hints of it scattered around part 1. Paul IIRC susses it out in talking with Kynes during The Dinner Scene

The date palm scene is to show that although water is vital to life, there are things even more important than keeping individuals alive, like keeping alive the dreams of a people. Theres a bit in the book where Kynes remembers the Fremen asking how long her project of changing the face of Arrakis will take, and she says hundreds of years, expecting them to wail in anguish, but they're just like, yeah ok. Speaking of dreams, the moment before all the production company logos where someone says dreams are messages from the deep, has any movie pre-empted studio logos with in-movie content before?

BlankSystemDaemon posted:The date palm scene serves as a explainer for how precious water is, but I honestly wish the scenes with the water conservatory and the water-seller would've been included instead - they make it much more obvious, if you ask me. I would love to have seen the water conservatory in particular. I get why they cut it since it's not critical, especially given the removal of the Fenrings and cutting back a lot of the build-up to the Harkonnen attack. But I'm sure it would have looked loving gorgeous in this movie, it's the perfect subject for some scenery porn. They seemed to give a little hint of it in the scene where Duncan finds the grow room in the ecological station, but that ended up not really being the same. I'm drawing a blank on specific examples, but I feel that's a thing I've seen occasionally before. I know some directors like to mess with the studio logos themselves, like the Matrix turning the WB logo all green or Serenity turning the Universal logo into a wasted Earth.

IIRC book Baron does indeed expect to kill the henchmen he sent to get rid of Paul and Jessica. When he's told the henchmen are dead he replies, "Of course they are", like duh, and then is surprised to learn that they were found dead already. Like, somebody killed the goons we were gonna kill before we got a chance.

Speaking of the New York Times, Paul Krugman just used his column to positively review Dune (and contrast it to the lame Foundation TV show):quote:And yes, it’s fun. When I was a teenager, my friends and I would engage in mock combat in which the killing blow had to be delivered slowly to penetrate your opponent’s shield — which will make sense if you read the book or watch the movie.
