There are many cards that make other cards cost fewer generic to cost, and possibly more that make cards cost fewer colored mana.

Are there any cards besides Ragemonger and Edgewalker that reduce colored mana cost? I know there's stuff like Rooftop Storm that gives spells an alternate cost. I was wondering about actual colored mana reduction.

None that I am aware of, probably due to the fact that spells without mana cost can't be cast normally and rely on alternate means (e.g. Evermind, Wheel of Fate, or Ancestral Vision).

Oh my God what the fuck am I?
I learned Magic via Arena and have never played paper. My girlfriend is interested in trying the game and I think it would be fun to play some kitchen table magic with her since she doesn't play games on PC very much.

Considering I can play standard on Arena and don't care much about deck power level for paper, what's my best bet for having a good time learning the paper game with someone? Should I just buy a bunch of basic lands and a bulk box of cards and we just build a couple of decks from that? Should I buy some packs and see what we end up with?

There's a few options I can think of:

- As you mentioned, a bulk box could be a good start, though there might not necessarily be synergy between any of the cards to build an interesting deck
- Not sure if this is still a thing (I think it is?), but Wizards gives out intro packs to LGS's to give out for free to new players who ask
- Jump Start also exists in paper; you each buy two packs, and that's your deck. Lands are included in this. These can be pricey though since there were some print issues and there were some high-value cards in there.
- With the pandemic being a thing stores should still have some stock of prerelease kits- they cost around $30-$40 and have 6 Draft packs to play Sealed. You'll also need to buy lands for this.
- If you want to take the next step and start playing with other people, Prerelease Events are a blast and most people at FNM Drafts are generally super casual and friendly to new players

Basics + bulk is probably cheapest, but may not result in the most fun experience, even as far as kitchen table Magic goes.

Wizards put out "deckbuilder toolkits" for a while that included some precon starter decks plus some random boosters, though those seem to be discontinued now. Looks like you can still find them for about $30 each. They now sell "Arena starter kits" that basically look about the same but smaller, cheaper, and probably give you some Arena codes for free goodies.

They also make (made?) "planeswalker decks," which are just precons featuring a particular planeswalker. I'm pretty sure these are what were included in the deckbuilder toolkits.

So I don't know if there's a "best" way to get someone into learning and playing paper magic, but you certainly have a lot of options.

Fats Dominar is on the case

off top of head things that I can’t remember being removed:
-emblems (I don’t think it’s this)
-legendary supertype (it might be this)
-card name, artist, collector number, expansion symbol, flavor text (these are all silver border only)
-certain keyword abilities (there are cards that remove all abilities but I think that’s distinct from cards like the Archetype cycle) (I actually think it’s this)

Like it could be “cards in graveyards lose flashback” or “creatures you control lose Decayed”

They stopped making planeswalker decks in favor of commander precons, which you can also find for pretty cheap if you grab some from previous sets since, with the exception of any that have particularly valuable cards, they seem to get discounted when the new ones come out.

There's plenty of box sets you can buy for two or more players. Like Gamenight which includes 5 unique single colored decks. Nicol Bolas Arch Enemey which includes 4 decks plus the arch enemy bonus game mode. Or any of the cheaper duel decks. The professor sells those 10 dollar cheap common/uncommon theme decks he hocks on his videos. These are all good basic-level magic and intentionally not too complicated. Your LGS should have been given a number of free trainer decks for exactly cases like this. IIRC it's two 30 card decks to learn that you can then shuffle together for one deck when she's ready to take that next step.
I would hold off on deck building until after she learns how to play.

Cool! Worth noting that the prerelease kits will also offer that opening packs without knowing what you'll get; I think that would be a good next step after Jumpstart since you'll be able to play sealed and then start brewing decks and trading.

Jumpstart's also good to have on hand since you can break up the decks back into their individual packs afterwards and try new combinations.

Here's the reason they gave: "When we surveyed our engages players, only 4.7% started with a Welcome Deck," explains WotC in-store play specialist Jacob Nourigat. "Welcome Decks, and all new player-focused promo items we've used for the past few years, try to make learning Magic as simple as possible. But players don't play Magic because it's simple. They like the challenge."

IMO the welcome booster having an Arena code suggests to me that the real reason might be as much about steering new players there as anything though.

I only learned about them because of people here and, yeah, I'm in the 4.7% fuckas. People still want their introduction to Magic to be simple, come on!

Honestly if she's never played before I would have her go through the Arena tutorial first just to get the basics down. I recently taught somebody the game with just my paper cards and really do wish I had quickly run them through the Arena tutorial first.

Yeah, the idea is that they have zero value though, so owners won’t be tempted to sell them on the secondary market instead of giving them away. We got a few of them a while back when I was teaching my wife to play. Used them as the foundation of some decks built up with draft chaff.
