the other half of that was learning to focus my attention purely on the character and a couple inches radius circle around them, allowing everything else to fade into the periphery, if that makes any sense

other than that? if you're on controller try kbm, and vice versa, if you're on pc. (i tend to do best with kbm, unless i'm in lazy/stoned mode and not really focusing hard, in which case out comes the dualsense)

Yeah, I'm trying to unlearn stuff from games like Hades etc. and not be aggresive zooming all over the place. I feel like I'm slowly getting used to the regular enemies on floors 1-2, but bosses still gently caress me up, especially if they catch me in two overlapping patterns, I can't deal with that. And if I only got charge guns I'm good as dead, lol

Dodge roll feels like a trap honestly, I'm more likely to eat a bullet immediately after than avoiding damage.

Beat Act 1 of Darkest Dungeon 2. All my characters were in love with each other and had most of their skills mastered and it was pretty cool.

Apparently there's no Act 2 yet? I did not realize this was early access when I bought it.

it's not a trap but it definitely shouldn't be your go-to option in most situations

difficulty may go down as you unlock more poo poo too, it is a roguelite at the end of the day; other than that, the game just demands practice, i think

It's been a while so I sadly don't remember much about getting good, though definitely stick to the easier regions first. But in case you just want a spoiler for the bday party specifically: there's a room with a little octopus who tags along with you and you normally escort him to his mom. Bring him to the party instead.

Meanwhile the caiysware chat in this thread got me to finally check out the new Spirits Abyss content and I'm closing in on 100% achievements again since the update added a few more. 89/90 and the final one I think is also some kind of secrety thing. I have an idea but I'll need to grind Cabins mode for it. Which is fine, actually.

Demoncrawl question: Is there some way to see the numbers of cells under strangers/items? It's a bit stupid when they're covering up a piece of information that would allow me to flag a cell.

I know it's more of a survival roguelite-ish game than a 'true' roguelike, but what's everyone's opinion of Curious Expedition 2? I played the original a bit years ago, and liked the overall theme. I never beat it though, in the end. Not sure why it didn't 100% click for me, but it was still a good bit of fun.

Also, just wondering - is the sequel heavy on metaprogression, etc. or could I theoretically complete the campaign as a win, first go? (Since the original just had extra characters you could unlock between plays - so no big deal, really)

There's a fairly common item that does it called Magnifying Glass, but no, it's intentional that they cover stuff up. Outside of special situations, loot (which is basically any item outside of Chests and Dark Hearts -- but you may not have progressed far enough to see the latter yet) normally only appears on cells with a value of 0, but effects that spawn them can go around that. Hearts in particular can mess you up because you normally can't pick them up at full health, but there are several items (all called "Book Of..." something) that let you and also give you benefits for doing so.

edit: There are also quite a few ways to kill strangers :twisted: and potential rewards for it

Thanks for the recommendation; this has been on my wishlist for ages, finally took the leap and enjoying it a lot so far! Simple presentation and clunky ui, but looks like there's a lot to dig into.

Is the default difficulty well balanced? Just left it at that for now, since I have no idea how tough the game generally is. Been okay so far (except when I peeked into some caves I had no business being in yet)

Yeah I just unlocked Barbarian 1-3 and Bubbler 1-3 because I ended up with a passive that spawned strangers instead of monsters. I was a detective so I kept revealing monsters. By the end of the game I ended up with boards just full of dozens of strangers and they kept killing and bubbling each other. It was pretty funny. I just looked and I've already put 8 hours in this game over a couple of evenings. Surprisingly addictive.

Detective owns. Very item synergy dependent, and you need a plan to deal with the couple stage mods that gently caress you over, but the high-roll runs are a blast. That item you mentioned is particularly crazy with it.

edit: I have like 200 hours in it now lol. I'm not sure how far you are but the game continues revealing several layers of new meta-mechanics for quite some time. And now I'm getting hooked on the multiplayer too

I'm not sure if it's more of a roguelike or lite, real time makes it weird, but Tomenet

They are as sturdy as Dwarves and are quite agile making them good fighters, rogues, and mimics. Being creatures of the night, Goblins have natural resistance to darkness. They receive bonus on 'Boomerang-mastery', 'Stealing' and occult 'Shadow' magic and a malus to 'Spirit' and all four holy schools

The more I get into Spirits Abyss the more I'm surprised this game / developer never really caught on. Gorgeous sprite work / visual aesthetic and there's just loads and loads of stuff in the game.

Yeah, I think it's funny that indie open world games and roguelites tend to have a lot of the same fans, because they kind of have completely opposite core conceits? Except, also kind of not, since they both just end up being driven by a series of encounters way more driven by variations on a central set of rules than by bespoke content (as well as both being very much about exploring). 80% of the gameplay in Horizon's Gate is made up of encounters and things with basically all the same set of framing, just with new and interesting monsters to fight against. But that framing works, and the monsters and PCs have really good and interesting mechanics, so it's all real fun

i found the octopus for the first time but i accidentally shot him cause i had the shotgun weapon and there were a lot of enemies in the room :(. i am disproportionately sad about it. in that run though I did get my first win and unlock skully broski so not all was lost, but i really wanted to solve the bday party.

i think a genuine part of it is that the games are underpriced. people see the price tag and assume its some kind of bullshit. his games start out cheap and end up cheaper and it just makes me sad because they're some of the best stuff in the genre.

the other problem is that theyre also too hard to be appealing to games journalists. im complete trash at spirits abyss but its still enchanting to me. spelunky, dwarf fortress, and dark souls are the only three hard games that rockpapershotgun is ever gonna approve of

edit: i am hoping his new game, Deadzoned will reach a wider audience because it's a more traditional roguelike so it won't require the same type of reflexes that the other games do.

part of the reason i like to buy weird indie games nobody has heard of is that i know how hard it is to be a creative person and how heartbreaking it is when your work doesnt find an audience. i want to try and find diamonds in the rough like these games and get them a wider audience. at worst im out the cost of a bad sandwich from subway, and at best i find hundreds of hours of great games.

oh one thing i should mention about Spirits Abyss is that the game has been kind of reorganised since it went into early access. It used to just throw you in at the deep end with Restless Adventures, but now it starts with Lexicanum Hunt, which is a shorter 4 area run with fewer of the advanced enemies around to gently caress with you. The tougher stuff gets reintroduced in Restless Adverntures and Undying Pilgrimage, but the Lexicanium mode is easier overall.

i also recommend starting out with the katana clan because their sword makes defending yourself from bats and such much easier, and those are the real early game killers. the alchemist clan has a gun which can be fiddly to aim (you can mess with the controls to make it easier to use) and takes more shots to kill stuff, and the rocket bombs they get are easier to kill yourself with.

In a sense it does -- there are three different "runs" that you successively unlock, and they progressively get longer and introduce more areas and bosses and enemies, but there's no way to play through the long run with the difficulty of the shortest run, for example. You can keep playing the shorter runs as much as you want though and still unlock stuff by doing so (I usually do one whenever I unlock a new character to test them out), but you won't see everything the game has to offer that way.

While it's still not an easy game I think it's MUCH easier than Spelunky. You're similarly fragile at the outset but the ceilings for player power and survivability are a lot higher and as far as I'm aware (possible I've just not run into them, I'm still constantly seeing new stuff) there are no instant death traps in the game. In Spelunky if you get a jet pack, a Kapala, and a shotgun, you're basically as strong as you can get. In Spirits Abyss there are many more items and they're more generously scattered throughout the levels -- I ended my last run with my basic attack replaced by a magical homing shotgun blast, levitation, health that (slowly) regenerated both upon killing enemies and picking up treasure, and a consumable item that briefly doubled my movement and attack speed and let me wipe the final boss in under a minute. Oh, and there's no fall damage, which probably accounts for several hundred of my Spelunky deaths.

(also, I've never messed around with Steam Remote Play before but I've got a pretty good connection here; if anyone else who's been into the game lately wants to try giving co-op a spin with me, I'd be down. I'm neganstomper58 on Steam)

edit: as for character suggestions, I agree that the Katana clan is definitely the easiest start. It can be a bit of a tricky unlock (you have to get to the Bazaar special level with a bunch of shops in it, then successfully kill all the shopkeepers to rescue the guy imprisoned upstairs) but the Pauper clan is really cool too. They get a weaker version of the Katana's sword attack, a missile similar to Alchemist for their bomb, and have the passive ability to get one item for free from every shop. With the passive, they can snowball into a ridiculous kit pretty quickly.

edit edit: And yeah if you're playing on a controller absolutely toggle the "right stick to attack" option in settings. I have no idea why it's not on by default but it makes any class with a gun way easier to play.

Haven't tried 2 but I'm like you about the first: played it a good few times, enjoyed it, but never got fully caught. And yeah, I liked getting new characters here and there but not having to grind anything over time just to suck less. There's some silly stuff I never managed to grasp either, such as whether there is anything useful to do with Lovecraft's Necronomicon apart from stupidly setting everything on fire around me.

Oh wow this helps a lot, the non-Katana clans are actually playable now.

Rogue Legacy 2 is $5 off right now (so only $20 because it is still EA, they plan to increase at launch). As said earlier, it is definitely close to launch and I am enjoying it a lot, but I liked 1 good enough. Basically 2 is just a more well polished and expanded version of 1. It is 1 but more of it. So if you didn't like the fundamental grind cycle of 1 I don't think 2 is going to change your mind.

Except, there are toggleable house rules now that make it all easier than default. I haven't messed with them but I think it can help with those iterative aspects if you don't like that idea (I personally do. I like the feeling of the power curve slowly increasing along with my skill power too). But I'm pretty poo poo at it so far (no first boss kills yet). Hasn't stopped me playing it.

Ah, the final gem on the frames in Spirits Abyss is obtained by beating the mode under X minutes. Guess that's my next goal.

I've noticed that the RNG in SA seems to repeat itself, and I'll get dropped back into exactly the same level I just died on when restarting a run. It was extra noticeable when I pulled the exact same layout from the card-matcher that I'd just cleared a couple runs prior.

How do you even get the second gem? I've got it for some characters but not others. Also, just finished my first full run as Shinobi, that was a rush. The art for the final final boss is cool as hell, it's very creepy. Only missing one character too, I'm guessing it's behind the rock that I assume needs cursed bombs to blow up. Looking on the Steam forums I guess I unlock the Cabins mode through a random event that'll show up now that I've beaten the Pilgrimage. Are there any unlockables behind the Blood Moon Trials mode or are they just for fun/leaderboards,

I've gotten the requirements for a lot of masteries but not a lot of tokens, so I'm pretty much just using Wizard for now. Could see myself playing this for a very long time, just loving around with different masteries and not even getting into the other stuff.

I will say, I did unlock Marksman though, and uh, holy poo poo I'm suddenly playing an entirely different game. Like, I guess I want to make mistakes now, because as long as I keep my chain up I can just murder monsters by clicking on them! It's an incredibly bizarre style of play.

The first gem is for a regular clear, the second gem is for clearing while having collected X amount of gold. I don't think it matters if you've spent the gold.

since I, Dracula Genesis came back to life from being abandoned for nearly a year, just one day after i did a long post about it, i am now convinced i have magic game revival powers.

Ziggurat 2 is a good time and I recommend it.

Oh yeah, I forget how scarce tokens are at first. Your main source of them is probably going to be the level-up bonus. Once you get to 100 you have the ability to prestige, which you basically always want to do, because it gives a permanent boost to the number of tokens you get when you level up. They're quite a bit more common in the "endgame" activities you'll get to after beating Normal and Hard mode runs, though, and item rarity is tied to stage difficulty in general so you'll see more as you play harder stages.

This is something the game doesn't really explicitly ever tell you, aside from maybe a couple tips on signs, but an item's cost in coins (which you can view in the codex) is proportional to its rarity. Rarer items are more likely to spawn on harder stages, with the game calculating "difficulty" by looking at a number of things, but stage mods are especially significant. As long as you can survive it, getting a stage with really hard stage mods like Fake or Ominous early in a quest can actually be a boon, because you're more likely to get powerful items there much earlier in a quest than you would otherwise. It's also part of why items like Demon Seed (add a random mod to selected stage, restore health by your number of omens) aren't total trash because they can help you power up early on. Another thing that I'm not sure is immediately obvious is effects like Miracle Seed's (increase the size of the selected stage) are very powerful because they make the board larger without increasing the monster count. Not only does the lower density mean an easier stage, having more empty spaces means more opportunities for loot and chests to spawn.

I think both Ziggurat 2 and Gunfire Reborn are excellent games for very different reasons.

Ziggurat 2 has like, an old arena shooter vibe to it, and I think controls very well in that way. Movement is fast and fluid, as are the weapons. There's no amount of ADS or anything like that, because why would you? If you stop moving you die.

Gunfire Reborn's more of a Borderlands-y vibe to it, with a big emphasis on looting guns with random modifiers. Games a bit slower and more focuses on the stats and builds than it is on the dodging and gunplay.

I'll toss in my vote for Gunfire Reborn as well, though I do think there is somewhat of a scale for dodging and learning boss patterns. Nowhere near the levels of old arena shooter style stuff but you definitely don't want to get hit if you can help it, especially in later difficulties. I've just had a boatload of enjoyment out of it, it's a very zen FPS experience once you internalize enough to just skim things you find and know if you want it or not.


Not at all familiar with Zigg 2, barely played 1 before putting it down. Just didn't grab me in the same way.
