I dunno, when I was a kid, as a 64 owner I kinda lost my poo poo the first time I saw the cg intro on the ps1 Tekken demo

Oh to be sure, the massive storage space discs had over cartridges allowing it to easily store movies was like 100% the reason the PS1 won the console war. As dumb kids, or even adults, who had never seen anything like that before it was godamn mindblowing. But that’s what I mean by “hasn’t aged as well”. In the end those little flashy animations were just that, they had nothing to do with the actual game itself. Like tekken would be the same game regardless of if you removed that cg intro or not.

The amount of porn and weeb poo poo on steam amuses me. It reminds me of the VHS rental places in my youth that had the walled off porn section, except much more shameful.

It works better as BasicallyJesus and pals go on a bro roadtrip simulator. I got it again recently just to finally try out Episode Ardyn (it was an extra special kind of dumb). It is actually MASSIVE LOADS better than it was on release, they stuck in a default accessory or workaround that addresses almost every annoying gameplay design choice, even letting you skip nearly the whole stealth factory section.

I don't understand the hate on FF7R's combat system at all. I thought it was a really good fusion of ATB and action combat, leaps and bounds better than FFXV's attempt to do that. I thought it was clunky at first but once I started playing the way it was intended (blocking is generally a better idea than trying to dodge, and changing characters very frequently is mandatory), I had a great time.

Then again my most unpopular game opinions in relation to SA are "that popular game you hate? Heh... it's actually good :smug:" so take that into account

And there’s some absolutely insane reasons behind that: https://all-things-andy-gavin.com/2011/02/04/making-crash-bandicoot-part-3/

The whole set of articles are worth a read, but the tl;dr for this part of the discussion is they did enormous amounts of precalculations on $100,000 SGI workstations to optimize the levels so that there were never more than 800 triangles on the screen at any time.

Crash 1 also used enough disc loading calls to exceed the expected lifetime of the PS1’s disc drive in a single playthrough.

Just absolutely bonkers levels of work went into making that game look good, and basically all of it was to work around what the PSX couldn’t do.

Tomb Raider has good controls! They're tight and responsive and you have room to maneuver and jump around in gunfights, and visually it's clear which jump type will land you where. I assume it's intentional that Lara jumps backwards everytime I draw the guns in TR3.

Now, having said that, Back to Nature was way better than Harvest Moon 64

I didn't love Breath of the Wild, I had an alright time and kind of petered out after about 15 hours just through feeling like I had nothing to do, it was an impressive world to be in but I'd already played Minecraft so most of what it did wasn't that novel

I've always been a little impressed by Road Rash 3D, which did an open world with an "inifinite" horizon (using some clever hill placement and switching out skyboxes) by taking advantage of streaming from the disc. A shame the game sucks to play.

That is one thing that is so often true, is that no matter how much better or worse a system is technically it really comes down to the devs. Whether in time or skills. Like technically the SNES was as fast as the Genesis, but it was harder for devs to make it do that, so you get some snes games that just chug if more than two things are on screen at once vs Sonic. Or the PS3 despite it’s impressive specs a bitch to work for.

Y'know it's really astonishing that the mega-drive was the better console than the SNES. Nintendo had Mario for god sake which stands the test of time and we had Sonic but despite that shortcoming it's still a TKO every day of the week

On a technical level it kind of did though. The N64 had an early version of what we’d consider a modern graphics card architecture, so it could actually do things like texture filtering and perspective-corrected rendering, as well as using a real depth buffer where the PSX had to just sort triangles in software and then hope for the best.

while true, it also antialiased by applying a vaseline-over-your-screen filter and looked like total loving poo poo on most old TVs my friends had

3d games on PSX and n64 looked like poo poo even compared to 2d games on earlier consoles. And the controls were usually worse, e.g. mario64 vs. SMW. I experienced going from NES to SNES graphics and was massively disappointed by that generation and stopped playing altogether for a few years. But I love posting about that time!

I specifically remember the PSX looking better than the N64 on old rear end CRT TV's as a kid specifically because it had no AA and didn't look like a vaseline filter

The only real technical advantage the Genesis had was a faster processor. That let them smooth over a lot of the shortcomings of the system.

The SNES was slower but the rest of the hardware were better choices for a game machine. Probably helped that the hardware was three years newer than the Genesis, too.
