His strength is too low to actually kill poo poo with and his sword rank isn't supporting it well either. Plus no WTA to help both those ends and 1 range vs a 1-2 range means it's player phase only... which means you may as well just use anyone with better strength who doesn't get one-rounded to do it instead. 15 speed is also past 'slow' and more 'ok who won't double him on this map...'

Even Elise would do better with her A rank axes if you used the Dual-Club.... if Camilla wasn't around to basically do a much better job mutilating red-triangle enemies with it.

Leo will still do some damage blasting people with his personal spell, but he's definitely a fringe character through and through.

Edit: How valid would it be to try to get Leo into General to grab Wary Fighter? I'd always been curious about using Wary Fighter on a Nosferatu tank. It's just that's 3 levels in a physical class with no way to use your primary stat....

And yeah Lilith is just a fine supporting example of why the writing in Fates is atrocious.

Got inspired to start a Conquest run, because honestly, I do adore the dual attack/guard system and the gameplay stuff. I feel they basically took the fun parts of what Awakening introduced, and made it a lot less RNG.

Corrin immediately starts with Str/Spd/Def level, and then HP/Str/Def, while Jakob goes for HP/Str/Spd, and another Str/Spd level.

Uh..... that's a strong start you two.....

What's even more stupid about Lilith's death is she is Corrin's half-sister, or quarter-sister I guess, but the only time you learn that is playing a DLC map. It could have been played for some real emotional punch.

Also she dies in every route.

Edit: Maybe you learn it in Rev, I wouldn't know. But you don't in Birthright or Conquest.

As silly as Lilith's death was, this does make me a bad sad... Her building in the castle still works the exact same way though. Her ghost will even participate in battles with the same stats as normal.

Wait, when did I get this? According to the wiki Fuga had it, so I guess I just forgot about it. I'm just glad Elise didn't miss during the last chapter...

Camilla gets the Energy Drop to make up for her poor luck with growths, Silas gets the Goddess Drop because his luck is a bit low for a unit who'll be taking as many blows as he will. Ophelia was the other candidate but I kind of want to give her the Dragon Herbs when I get them?

I didn't use it here, but I think I might use the Speedwings on Xander. My plan is to reclass him into Hero, which should boost his speed enough that doubling becomes feasible, especially if Laslow or Peri are supporting him. Speaking of, I should maybe use my spare Master Seal on Laslow too. I don't care about his stats and Heroes give really good pair-up bonuses, although Bow Knight is also an option if I want movement over defense. Maybe I do?

Ooh, tomes are on sale! And I really want to buy them all to forge a bunch of stuff. Imagine a forged Nosferatu or Mjolnir...

...but both of my (good) magic users have very full inventories already and I do only have so much money to go around. I'll just buy a second Lightning that Ophelia and Leo can share.

Turns out I had a bunch of spare Thunders so Camilla can have a forged one. I'll merge this with Ophelia's forged tome when I reclass Camilla. Unfortunately there's one less character than I wanted. I can't use all the characters I want in maps or names : (

Camilla/Beruka B, Leo/Felicia A. I'm not sure Camilla's going to have enough levels to get all the Berserker skills before she hits level 20.

I have so many ingredients that I can make a speed meal before every map. I might replace it with something more specific if I need the stats, I'm just doing this so I don't forget and go into the next chapter with no buffs accidentally.

Staaaats. After this chapter I'm probably going to recruit Shigure for his rallies. Otherwise I'm not sure - the longer I put off paralogues the higher level the recruits will be and the more EXP I'll get, but if I put them off for too long then there won't be much time to reap the benefits from having them... I'll definitely have them all done before Chapter 25 at least. I want every advantage possible before I try Ryoma's map.

I'm pretty sure "heroes" just refers to which pair of units built the most support points, which will usually be whoever participated in combat together the most. Elise kicking rear end by herself does not make her MVP according to that system unfortunately.

He's not terrible but with my deployment slots being as tight as they are it's harder and harder to justify bringing him along. He's alright as an answer to mages but units like Elise or Silas do a good enough job while also being faster and hitting harder. A Leo that had more EXP invested in him and better luck with growths would be a good mage answer, although he'd still rather hit them with his tome than use swords.

He'd have to either marry Effie or a Corrin with Knight as her talent if he ever wanted to get it, so unfortunately not very. If you had child paralogues spare he could probably get some easy EXP from those though.

After 5 chapters we finally begin our assault on the country we're supposed to be invading! Time to actually fight some Hoshidans. Not Nohrians, not our allies, not even some random foxes. I can't wait.

Meanwhile in Chapter 22 of Birthright, Corrin and co. are about to be mugged by Shura in the middle of the streets of Nohr's capital for their legendary weapons. Getting to hear the extremely good endgame map theme a chapter earlier is your reward for making it this far in this gruelling path.

There's Fort Jinya, the first map of BR. Except this version's bigger because it's a lategame map now. Unfortunately it seems my army forget to bring their mounts?

Healing who? We have not fought a single Hoshidan since we got here! Although I guess there were those Faceless who killed a few soldiers...

Here's the first of four maps where we fight our way through to Hoshido's capital. Our opponent here is Sakura, although the actual boss is Yukimura, the Hoshidan strategist... In role. That's not his actual class.

This map splits your army in two, with both sides meeting at the very end. The left half is full of bulky axe users, the right has a mix of mages, puppets, and fliers. Only Yukimura has to be defeated - Sakura remains out of the way and requires some effort to reach, although she will harass your army with staves throughout the chapter.

I tried to make a map of which locations trigger what reinforcements but it very quickly became an incomprehensible mess of colours. Basically, getting a little into each side of the map triggers some reinforcements on that side, reaching the top area with Yukimura triggers reinforcements from various forts on both sides. Each reinforcement trigger causes two waves to appear for two consecutive turns, so blocking the forts for one turn and then moving off of them will only stop one wave and not the second.

Here's Yuikimara. He's got high stats all around, he's fast, and he's on a fort. His personal skill increases the hit% of all of his allies by 5, which might not seem like much but it does amount to something.

What's most interesting about him is Spendthrift and the one Gold Bar he's holding. Trying to bait him into attacking you on enemy phase will be a lot trickier thanks to his +10 attack and defense, but at the same time if you try to kill him on player phase and fail then you'll be eating a big attack in retaliation as well as debuffed defenses thanks to his weapon. You really want to make sure combat with him doesn't last more than a single phase.

Sakura's got high stats, but she won't attempt to engage you in combat unless you stand next to her. What she will do is hit you with Freeze and Silence from afar, and then heal her allies when she's out of those. Taking her out gives you a neat stat booster so it's worth the effort if you can.

What is funny is that she's got a Songstress exclusive skill in Voice of Peace. All it does is effectively boost her defenses a bit, but it does feel even sillier than all the Nohr exclusive skills enemies have had before. She's also got Sol and Miracle to make defeating her a bit harder.

On the left and on the right are Hana and Subaki, Sakura's retainers. Unlike in BR or Rev they are very competent here and should be treated as bosses themselves.

Hana has Duelist's Blow and Armoured Blow to make her very tricky to bait out, plus Rend Heaven to potentially deal even more damage on a hit. You are absolutely not going to double her with anyone. Units like Xander can tank her hits, but they'll struggle to hit back in retaliation.

Subaki's not nearly as tough. Aegis can potentially stop bows from killing him, but otherwise he's just got high stats and mobility without any particular gimmicks. His stats are very wonky for a Falcon Knight, with high strength and defense but bad speed. His whole personality thing is being a perfectionist who desparately overcompensates for his flaws so it's fitting he picked a class that boosts what he's bad at and doesn't do much for what he's good at.

Finally there's 3 different launchers - shurriken ballistae - that are manned by Mechanists who don't move. Launchers don't deal much damage but they do lower your defenses by 5 each on hit. You're going to be in range of at least one of these guys for most of the chapter.

Dragon veins scattered across both sides of the map allow you to lower walls on the opposite side, opening up paths on that side to then lower walls on the other side, and so on. The rather cryptic message about Sakura means that when you trigger the final wave of reinforcements right at the end of the map she'll activate her own vein, rebuilding every wall you destroyed and potentially trapping you.

So you must split your army carefully to wage an assault on two different fronts, alternating between dragon veins to slowly advance on each side, making sure not to overextend or else you'll be destroyed by reinforcements...

Just kidding, how you actually beat this chapter is you stick every unit on the left and don't deploy anyone on the right. You still get to bring your whole army if you pair them up in preparations! There is absolutely no reason not to do this unless you're trying to get as low turn counts as possible, there's no time incentive and splitting your army just makes it harder to deal with reinforcements. Fight half as many units with twice the army and then if you're still hungry for EXP you can swing around to the other side before seizing. The walls don't even matter, they help you as much as they hurt you and this way you don't have to worry about them coming back up.

Laslow promotes into Bow Knight and Xander gets a speedwings. Now he's faster and he's got more movement thanks to his pair-up partner!

The one consequence of pairing everyone up is you need to waste time splitting them all up again, but when there's no time pressure at all it's just a minor annoyance.

Oni Chieftans might have fearsome physical attack power and bulk, but their magic sucks. Baiting them from range is easy to do with all the walls in this chapter.

Hana won't aggro until one of your units is in range of at least 3 of her squadmates (including herself), or you take down one of the units near her. Sometimes enemies break their own rules if they can get a kill so I'd make sure nobody who could die stands near her even if you don't think she'll move.

An okay level, but Jakob's going to be replaced pretty soon. Both his children will likely be better healers and combat units...

The Blacksmiths can be lured though. Entering the little room they're in will cause a bunch of reinforcements, but with my whole army here it'll be trivial to farm them for EXP when they spawn.

High HP and low res make them perfect targets for Nosferatu. Ophelia's stats have been increasing rapidly, maybe soon she'll be tanking entire armies like her father could in the earlygame? Even now her physical bulk is worse than her dad's, but tonics and Seigbert can fix that.

I was wondering why it was so hard for my units to double Blacksmiths and wow, these guys are fast!

Blacksmith is a really weird class and I'm not 100% sure what their stats are supposed to be like. I think they made Onis promote into them because there weren't enough sword classes in Birthright, but they're just kind of a weird class concept in general. I guess they're like slower, tankier Heroes? Only a little slower, but slower still. A bit like Hector's promoted class in FE7.

I feel like Corrin changed her bane from resistance to speed while I wasn't looking. I was hoping this class change would fix her mediocre speed...

Vantage can work well on Corrin, especially when you're trying to keep her in VoF range, but I don't have room for it in her skillset right now.

This little danger area here is out of range of Hana and her posse, but is in range of the launcher and multiple of Sakura's staves. You can leave someone here for multiple turns to wear out of all Sakura's staff uses, but the launchers will never wear out.

Reinforcements appear in two waves each. I accidentally occupied one of the forts, stopping one set from spawning and losing some potential EXP : (. This set can easily be farmed, but later in the map you will want to block forts to prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed.

The launcer range makes it hard to tell where's actually safe and where isn't. It's best to highlight all the enemies you're scared of so you can tell where you'll get attacked from and not accidentally leave Azura in range of an enemy.

Yeah Leo's just here for support points and heartseeker now. Extra levels will make him more useful, but I'd rather he not take EXP unless he has to. So he's just hitting this guy with a sword to impress his girlfriend.

Ophelia is absolutely shredding all these big beefy axe dudes. This chapter is very much an EXP goldmine so there will be a lot of these screens!

Yeah you can silence Leo, it's fine. Please target him instead of literally anyone else.

Finally! Now that Silas has D knives I'm not sure who to spend the Arms Scroll on anymore, maybe it could go to Peri? I imagine lances will be her main form of attack, but letting her use Steel Axes and getting the accuracy boost from C axes might not be a bad idea. Otherwise it's just going to go to waste... I could give it to Camilla once she goes WL, but with the Dual Club she doesn't really need lances that much.

Nina's stats are very high and yet I don't really feel as if she has any valuable niche right now. But this'll all be worth it when she gets Spendthrift and reclasses back into Bow Knight!

I could send Xander in to tank Hana's squad, but the magic attacks from the Onis would sting a little. I said earlier that they're not very good but Xander's resistance is also not very good.

Be careful when you walk through this corridor because this guy has Tomefaire and Shurrikenbreaker and he will attack anyone who's in range. The Onis might be weak but this guy hurts!

Xander gets two rallies and rushes into to bait. Azura also gets sheltered since the enemy might attack her if she stands here... I'm not 100% sure, but they might.

It's fine. He doesn't need to be anywhere else!

Oh, so they would have killed Azura! Good thing I moved her then. Instead they get to be sweet EXP.

Thanks to rally res Xander doesn't have much to fear. The launchers could have targeted him but didn't... I don't know why.

Now to muscle through all these jerks. They don't have a lot of res but they do have a lot of HP.

Hana might be fragile, but you do have to actually be able to hit her in order to kill her. You can try for WTA but she can also swap to her Dual Katana to have that backfire horribly on you.

Maybe I'll soften her up from a distance first. Sadly I've got nothing to debuff her speed...

Azura can buff the skill speed and luck of an attacker.

But this still doesn't fill me with confidence. Camilla's going to get absolutely shredded on enemy phase if she misses!

Oh I forgot to actually go for this hit. Sometimes 50% hits!

Xander may not have much, but at least he has his health.

Oops! Sakura does have Silence doesn't she. And now Ophelia's in range of attack...

That was a poor move on my part. She dodged and only one of the launchers targeted her, but I didn't know either of those things would have happened at the time. In some games silencing a unit unequips their magical weapons...

Not this one though. So you can't take away a tome's stat boosts by silencing the user.

Taking out these guys is top priority. Entering their little box at the top of the map will trigger a huge wave of reinforcements, but attacking them through the wall will not. Annoyingly however you do have to take out both of them before they'll stop firing.

Well Shurrikenbreaker is sure helping this guy hit Silas, but it's not helping him dodge. I thought I'd misread what skill it was when I first saw his 100% hit chance.

Sakura's Silence has ran out but she's still got her Freeze. There's no need to rush so I'll waste all of its uses before I advance any further.

Just in case this does trigger reinforcements, I'll occupy this one fort before attacking (it doesn't).

Ophelia's getting so much combat done today! Now I'm starting to understand what all the hype was about.

All forts blocked, all staff uses gone. Some units will come from the forts at the very bottom of this side, but there's a small distance between them and me.

Oh, Yukimura's a bit tougher than I anticipated. I don't have to defeat him now, but giving me a way to instantly end the chapter is nice just in case the reinforcements overwhelm me.

A danced Camilla is my best bet to weaken him. Even if she misses, she'll still hit him with Savage Blow and allow another unit to get a boost from her personal...

She hits once, he misses. I think that's an okay outcome.

Camilla's strength gets sealed which might be a problem for her later. At least she avoided the other debuffs.

I had to fetch Jakob to allow Elise to OHKO him to make things less risky, but I'll be honest and say I had no plan at all if she missed both shots. I probably would have gotten her killed...

Reinforcements are about to rush out en masse, but now I can leave any time I want! I still need to shake down Sakura for her magic powder at the very least though.

Blacksmiths from the bottom left, a mix of Onmyoji, Puppets, and Falcoknights from the right which will now aggro on me. The rightmost enemies are much tougher than the left ones, which is part of why I didn't split my army!

Oh and now I have this launcher all to myself. Toys with sharp edges are perfect for terrorising younger siblings.

All the scary reinforcements will be coming through this easily manageable chokepoint, so I'll let them come to me instead of rushing ahead. The seize location is still in reach in case things get hairy...

Xander will plug this fort to prevent wave two from spawning while also luring all this Blacksmiths that can barely hurt him at all.

I shall let the EXP roll in... That's her magic and luck capped! I checked her averages and while I can't quite remember how many boosters I gave her, I think she's slightly ahead in magic and luck, about on par with defense and resistance, and severely screwed in HP when taking into account the robe I gave her. Interesting.

These guys spawn inside Sakura's closed off room on wave two. They'll break through the wall and approach my army, but in the meantime I can pelt them with sharp objects from safety.

Xander's not been getting much strength or defense, but it's not as if that matters too much. He's got enough already.

I'd like to bait the Oni and Onmi pair if possible... Or at least one of them, since there's two. Two pairs of guys shouldn't be able to come from one fort!

This single woods tile makes for a good place for a chokepoint. Silas's bulk isn't super high, but thanks to Corrin and Sol he'll hold out for a while. I can also rally him and boost him with Inspiration from safety here.

Sakura's out of offensive staves but she can still heal people. Not by much, but she can.

Wow! He skillfully avoided all the stats I wanted him to get! I know ninjas don't have good strength or defense but he's been slacking on those.

This is one of the coolest skills but it's not actually... good. Instant kills are great and the animation is incredible but the activation chance is way too low to be reliable at a quarter of a unit's skill. It also can't activate at the same time as Sol so I don't want it potentially screwing me over.

This is about the level of opposition Silas is facing. There's one guy with a Calamity Gate but for some reason he insists on using Rally Magic instead of attacking.

Corrin got speed! Nice.

Astra can build dual guard gauge with each hit so it's actually not that bad at all in Fates as far as offensive skills go... but it's still a bit too unreliable for my tastes. Also I had enough trouble with Dragon Fang screwing me out of EXP.

Sol MN Silas's ability to shred Falcon Knights will 100% come in handy for Chapter 24. He's one of the few reasons I'm not dreading it, him and all the great fliers I have.

Yeah all the actual strategy for this chapter is over. It's just EXP.

Yes, finally! Camilla is now significantly stronger against most enemy types. I can finally reclass her...

I think Azura's starting to cap stats too. Parents only boost their kid's stats so much in Fates, but her kids have got to be getting a lot from her.

The initial wave is now gone and I can advance on the rest of the map. I'm really happy to see this jerk go!

I do feel a little bad about this... But it's for the good of all of us! And for your Spirit Dust.

You never get to fight Elise in any route... It makes sense given her character and her role in the story, but I would have liked to have seen what skills they gave her.

Capable of self defense or not, this doesn't feel like a very fair fight.

I am very glad Ophelia's getting bulk and speed, but where's the magic? I guess I do now have 2 Spirit Dusts I don't know what to do with...

This'll be my last turn on the map, so I sent everyone forward with no regard to safety knowing I'd end it before enemy phase. I could rout the rest of the chapter but the longer I play the more potential for error I give myself. I don't want to have to restart because I got greedy!

This was the easy chapter. The next 3... Oh boy.

Even in all out war, nobody dies... I would feel bad if you killed Sakura here so I guess that's okay.

LOL just kidding Garon decided to show up with an actual army and he killed all our hostages because he's evil. Sakura, Yukimura, and the two retainers were kept alive at least! So nobody with a name or face died.

There's a fun gimmick build you can do with Lethality but it requires a lot of cross-class movement; Quixotic from Basara and Hoshidan Unity from Hoshido Noble give you a minimum flat 25% activation rate on skills, and Lethality is, as you'd imagine, the best skill to use for that. That said, doing so also gives your opponent +15% skill activation rate and +30 hit to your opponent.

From my calculations the highest skill cap possible in Fates is 45 (35 is the highest class skill cap, shared by Sniper, Master Ninja, and Hero. Marrying either Saizo or Takumi to Orochi, or Arthur to Beruka, and their marrying their child to a skill boon Corrin gets a Kana with a +10 skill modifier), which means before taking into account pair-up bonuses and rallies you could have a 36% activation chance Lethality Kana with those skills. That's pretty cool. You could increase that further with a bunch of methods but working out the pair-up bonuses children give is hard.

That all sounds like a nightmare to set up and there's no real reason to do all that, but still! Maybe I'll try setting it up one time.

Statues also increase the stat caps of everyone at level 3, and there are thirteen scratch that, twelve (Yukimura isn't in Revelation) Skill boosting statues plus Corrin's statue giving Skill if it's their boon.

quote:

Midori
Salvage Blow (Blacksmith, 15)
Dragon Ward (Hoshido Noble, 5)
Profiteer (Merchant, 5)
Good Fortune (Merc, 5)
Hoshiodan Unity (Hoshido Noble, 15)

Dad must be Kaze. Kaze can pass Good Fortune from Silas Friendship
Mom must be Corrin? Bloodline can pass Hoshido Noble
Profiteer is natural from Merchant
Corrin must pass Salvage Blow ??

Corrin can't have Luck bane

But like. Salvage Blow is so high in the Blacksmith line that it'd take forever to reach, and Good Fortune (while I like it more than most) isn't that good.

Salvage Blow isn't that high up, it's the level 5 Blacksmith skill, Lancebreaker's the 15. And Kaze'd pick up the Cav line from Silas, not Merc, so Good Fortune and Salvage Blow are mutually exclusive here, both would have to be the inherited skill from Corrin. Not sure which would be the way to go, off the top of my head I want to say Salvage Blow because the potential to snag more Hoshidan weapons on Conquest sounds like a more interesting/useful niche trick to have than Bad Renewal. But being able to sub out all your Iron Lances for Naginatas or whatever may be less enticing if you're actually engaging with all the systems and have several of those lances forged to +1 or 2 instead of forgetting to touch the forge 90% of the time like I do.

My original plan was to have Camilla go through the Berserker class to get Axefaire, but honestly I don't think it's worth it now. She doesn't have enough levels to get both it and Swordbreaker unless I give her an Eternal Seal, and I still need to unlock her A+ support with Beruka... Her skill slots are tight enough as it is anyway. I'll let this be her final class.

I feel like I have a lot less lance users than I used to. This Beast Killer seems like a good deal, but I've already got one and there's like 1 more story map left with beast units in it. I could Arms Scroll Camilla to D lances and have her use it but I don't think it's worth it.

Peri can have the scroll instead. Now she can use Steel Axes! The only other candidate I considered was Silas, but he's going to be seeing so much combat that I don't think he'll have trouble raising his knife rank anyway.

Elise has capped two stats already, but there's room for her to learn new skills. I'm about to do at least one easy child paralogue where being stuck in a bad class won't matter, so I might repurpose my original plan for Camilla...

Berserker has 3 skills Elise really wants, and also Gamble. HP + 5 should make her bulk better, Axefaire will make her Bolt Axe hits even stronger (-faire skills are no longer a stat increase like they were in Awakening, so it's not useless for magic weapons anymore), and I really need someone to have Rally Strength and unlike Camilla she won't care that she can't use it on herself.

Incidentally, Elise will have 60/30/65/40/70/70/15/40 growths as a Berserker. They're... surprisingly good, honestly. Hopefully she procs HP in the four levels she gets!

I wonder if the unit manning the Lottery has any effect on the likelyhood of winning... If so, I think I'd like Arthur to be here every time. I still don't have every ore or ingredient!

Seems like Kaze and Camilla make a good duo in the Arena. I've upgraded it to level 2, which means that winning a fight lets me do another one with double the stakes. Your HP does get healed after combat, but only a little. It's generally not worth going another round unless you didn't take any damage or took so little that you end up back at full.

...sometimes you're in a lot of danger even if you are at full health. It's a gamble! Unlike the Lottery, which is not.

I agonised over a good name for the combo of Urbosa's Fury and Electrochemistr[y] for so long that I had to pick a terrible name to stop myself from spending forever trying to think of the perfect one. Right now Ophelia's inventory is super crowded and Elise can't use tomes so Leo can hold onto it. I think it's more accurate than Brynhildr?

Oh and Peri can get a forged Steel Axe too. If I wanted I could merge this with Camilla's, but then I'd only have one forged axe.

Silas/Azura A, Xander/Laslow and Jakob/Peri B. I recommend you go off and look up Xander & Laslow's supports together on your own, they're both fun and interesting. Laslow's personality really clashes with Xander's which makes for a good support. Xander's support with Peri also explains why he puts up with him in the first place.

This next map will be easy but there's no reason not to cook a dish.

Speaking of easy, why not do it now? This will be a very short map and most of my screenshots are going to be level up screens, it won't make a substantial update on its own.

We're on a boat, for... some reason? I thought this chapter happened in Shigure's deeprealm but no, we're just taking a cruise on our private yacht. I guess everyone needs time to recover from the shock of Garon's attrocities. It's probably fine to leave him in charge of invading Hoshido while we're gone...

Despite what the introductory cutscene would have you think, Shigure does not take part in this map. Which means you'll have to win before you can figure out what his stats will be. I'm just using this map as a place to earn EXP and build supports, so I'll deploy everyone who needs one or the other. Camilla no longer wants to be a Berserker so she doesn't need to support Beruka anymore.

Not content with one boat map per route, Azura's paralogue has to be a boat map too. There are 2 boats alongside ours, each one will take turns running alongside ours to let both us and the enemies attack each other.

Boat A is full of Berserkers and Adventurers. Berserkers are less scary when they're not mixed in with mages. A bulky sword or tome user can easily handle this side of the map.

Boat B is full of Sorcerers and Adventurers. They're a bit more tricky to handle, since they both hit opposite sides of the defensive spectrum while also using weapons with different places in the triangle. It is easy to bait them over a few at a time though.

Defeating the boss ends the chapter. He's on boat A and is nothing special, you could easily rush him turn 1 if you wanted. I don't want that though, I want EXP!

The generic Adventurers outclass him in some stats, but not in others... I don't know why, but non-Conquest paralogues scale really weirdly. You can tell they put a lot more effort into the CQ exclusive paralogues compared to these ones.

There's high level units mixed in among the regular ones and their stats do similar things for some reason. I wonder why? I guess it adds some enemy variety, but it's very odd.

The northmost ship moves alongside ours turn 1 and I send my army in. There's not going to be much talk of strategy for this paralogue, it's kind of just ending my units to slam into the other units.

Xander faces 0 threat from the Berserkers and Elise can cleanly KO them from a distance. Corrin also has 1-2 range and WTA against everything. Peri's there mostly to rally and Jakob is there to heal.

Meanwhile my other units can only yell angrily at the guys on the other ship until they come over next turn.

Nice! I was worried Xander's levels were falling off a little.

Boarding an enemy ship will leave you stranded for the duration of the next turn. That's no issue for me though, the enemies are stuck with me more than I am stuck with them.

Now my other units can engage the enemy. These guys will be a little harder to deal with, but Ophelia should be fine.

Elise reminds me of that one Berserker boss from Awakening. The Bolt Axe having infinite uses in this game makes me feel much more inclined to actually use it...

Hey, you missed HP! Or well in a sense you got it but not in the sense I wanted.

This is very safe. Xander fears nobody on this side, his high luck and crit avoid from his sword make Berserker crits a non-issue.

This side however is rather scary. Rather than boarding their ship, I think I'm going to have to let them come to me.

The high level Berserkers have Gamble and therefore have a single percent chance to crit. They're also just fast enough for Xander not to double them.

So the danger of "easy" maps is they cause me to turn my brain off entirely and do things like this. Thankfully Ophelia survived, and I would have lost only 2 turns of progress anyway, but it would have been embarrassing. I feel like I have had more stupid deaths in Birthright than I have Conquest because I forget enemies can actually be dangerous.

At least I can now clean these guys up in safety now they're cut off from their friends.

Very nice! It occurs to me I have no idea what Corrin's final class is going to be. I think I want her as a Great Knight for Endgame just because there's a very important damage threshold she needs to meet, but otherwise I don't know what fits her best. Nohr Noble, Paladin, and Swordmaster all suit her quite well...

There are two Berserkers Xander can't double and he crit both of them. Seems like he's committed to getting faster though.

I forgot this was a defeat boss chapter entirely. I also forgot this guy was the boss? Killing him will end the map, so maybe I won't finish him off just yet.

Peri's flying movement means she can fight on whichever boat she wants. I'd like to raise her axe rank more, but these enemies want to be hit with lances.

Some people don't do child paralogues in Conquest because they feel like cheating from how overleveled they make you, and I now understand that line of thinking a little more.

There really is no danger from leaving the boss alive. If you prolong this chapter enough than reinforcements will start spawning, but I don't think I'll go that far.

Nina gets a great level and closer to Spendthrift, Ophelia reminds me I forgot to give her the Spirit Dust I said I would.

I guess one single purple guy gets to live. Wow this sword is huge. Anime swordsmen have a lot of upper body strength!

I'm now back to being mad at Corrin. Maybe she could get the Dragon Herbs instead?

Yaaaay.

All of Shigure's friends are dead because Azura is being hunted by otherworldly forces and refuses to explain why. You won't get to learn why either unless you play Revelation!

Here are his stats. He's inherited Voice of Peace from Azura and Rally Resistance from Jakob... all part of my MASTER PLAN to make the ultimate rallybot. He'll get Rally Speed as soon as he uses the Offspring Seal, and then Rally Defense thanks to inheritence weirdness giving him Wyvern Lord. His personal skill also allows him to use rallies to recover HP.

Shigure promotes into Falcon Knight for Rally Speed... and then straight into Wyvern Lord so he can get Rally Defense. He'll have to gain 3 levels before he unlocks it, but that's not too big an ask.

While I do want him to have as many rallies as possible, it is a bit of a shame to take him away from FK since that class gives him staff access. His combat stats are better as a wyvern, but he's no Peri or Camilla.

Oh and you can take this while I remember. I now only have one stat booster left! I'm saving the last Dust to see who needs it. Maybe Ophelia, maybe Corrin.

There's a few capped stats in my army now. These high stats will make things easier, but Inevitable End and Staff Savant can't be surmounted with just numbers...

Next time: Some kid's paralogue probably because I am not using Berserker Elise in a story chapter

Shigure
Sky Knight (HS: Troubadour (Azura), Wyvern Rider (Jakob))
A+ Suppot Classes: Forrest (Troubadour)
Personal Skill: Perfect Pitch: Heal 10% of max HP of allies within 2 spaces when using "Rally" command if allies have less HP than unit.
Growths (With Default Class) [Base]:
HP: 42.5% (42.5) [35]
STR: 37.5% (47.5) [45]
MAG: 10% (10) [5]
SKL: 42.5% (52.5) [45]
SPD: 35% (50) [35]
LCK: 35% (55) [25]
DEF: 30% (30) [35]
RES: 25% (45) [25]

Time for another "analysis" where I kind of just shrug my shoulders and say "yeah this guy exists". Shigure's a child you'll want to pick up on any run of the game thanks to how useful Azura is and how good his paralogue is for EXP, but is he actually useful? Maybe.

Shigure's niche in Conquest is being a Sky Knight - Azura can be one too and so can her husband, but Azura absolutely does not want to reclass and her husband might not be a particularly good fit for it. Sky Knights get access to the extremely useful Rally Speed, which combines with Shigure's personal skill to make him uniquely equipped to support his allies. He's guaranteed to inherit Troubadour from Azura, so he can grab Rally Resistance too. Additional rallies can be gotten through his father - Arthur and Keaton can get him Rally Strength, Laslow and Niles can get him Rally Skill, and Jakob has the strange quirk of giving him Rally Defense through Wyvern Lord. By default Shigure gets both Sky Knight and Troubadour, and for some reason rather than inheriting Cavalier from Jakob he instead inherits the "opposite" class to Sky Knight from Azura, which is Wyvern Rider.

As an actual combat unit I guess he's okay. His base speed is surprisingly bad, but Sky Knight boosts it a lot. Otherwise his strength and defense both seem decent. Jakob unfortunately does not do his growths any favours, but his function will be to rally so I don't really mind his combat being mediocre. I feel as if Kinshi Knight is his "canon" promotion, but I much prefer Falcon Knight - it gets him Rally Speed and lets him support allies with staves. A Kinshi Knight Shigure would probably help a lot in Chapter 24, especially if he's a late recruit with a decent bow rank right out the gate, but I honestly don't have enough experience with the guy to say.

One thing to note is that Keaton's inherited Beast Killer weakness won't hurt him at all if he stays in his base class, on account of it already being weak to beast killing weapons. Keaton doesn't seem like a bad father for him, actually. He gets good stats, Rally Strength, he can inherit a cool beast skill like Better Odds...

Unit Rating: I wish I could give him ginger hair

This is what I did in my game, and Shigure was a monster. Velouria can also make excellent use of Sky Knight if you wanted another hard-hitting flier on the roster.

You put that Jakob gives Shigure Troubadour and Azura Wyvern Knight at the beginning of the update, then said they gave the opposite class.

So class inheritance is weird and convoluted and there's a ton I probably forgot and there's a whole chart that you can luck up but in reality it only effects a handful of units:

Each child is guaranteed to get 1 class from each parent, but the only truly unique class is Songstress. Since Songstress can't be passed down that means Shigure should inherit Troubadour, but he inherits that from Jakob so he gains the counterpart to Pegasus which is Wyvern. A Shigure with a different father would inherit Troubadour from Azura instead. Also a Caeldori with Azura should inherit Samurai and Troubadour.

It's the same reason Nina gets Onmyoji from Nyx and Percy gets Pegasus from Beruka. I'm not aware of any other combinations outside of hacking. Corrin will always pass down Nohr Noble, Mozu Villager and Keaton and Kaden Wolfskin and Kitsune.

Edit: I think the way Azura works is that her primary class for inheritance is Pegasus and her secondary is Troubadour which is why Shigure ends up this way. Also his hair being the same as his mom's is explained in a DLC, like everything else. Spend $120 on this game and you too can have everyone's complete backstory, except the ones that weren't written or translated.

Oh, good catches. I guess I kept Silas as a Merc for so long I forgot his base class is Cav. If I could give Corrin a Mercenary specialty, Kaze could Partner Seal into it and pull Good Fortune, I think?

I actually have a tough time getting Shigure, not because of his paralogue, but because getting Azura to S Rank can be very slow and painful unless you're actually stapling her to someone, which means you're out a Dancer. Her low Movement means it's hard for her to keep up with several units, which makes focus-supporting a specific unit difficult unless it's Jakob since he can spend his refreshed turn healing someone.

Yeah that's correct, the usual inheritance order is Dad's Primary > Dad's Secondary > Mom's Primary > Mom's Secondary > Hoshidan/Nohrian counterpart of Mom's Primary. Since Shigure already has Sky Knight, he will always inherit Troubadour from Azura unless his dad is Jakob; in which case, he gets it from Jakob, and then the Nohrian counterpart of Sky Knight, Wyvern.

And yeah, those are the only possible unique combinations because the Hoshidan units' classes don't end up having that kinda overlap. There are a lot of dud secondary class options though! Like Orochi will give Apothecary to Selkie/Rhajat.

The Faire skills were actually nerfed from Awakening; using a Magic weapon boosted your Magic instead of Strength, meaning classes like Tricksters could use a Levin Sword to get a boosted heal. One of my favorite endgames for Cordelia was Shockstick Lancefaire Bride

I think Hayato is the only magical Hoshidan unit that has a magical option for his side class. Sakura gets Sky Knight, Orochi and Azama get Apothecary.

Teeeechnically because of how things work it is actually Azura that's giving Shigure WK even though she wouldn't with any other parent but Jakob, but that's just me being pedantic about the mechanics and yeah I probably should swap them around to make it more clear.

Heart Seal classes are straight up stated to be based off of personality which is why some of them are so terrible and dumb. They easily could have justifed Diviner Rinkah imo, she's princess of the Fire Tribe and fire is magical! I think the rule of "first gen units can't have heart seal classes with overlapping promotions" hurts things as well, since it prevents Orochi from getting Shrine Maiden or Spear Fighter for example.

Falcon Knight Sakura's actually quite good! Or at the very least decently viable. She can Heart Seal straight into one and keep her staff rank, and her strength growth isn't actually that bad. I tend to keep her as a Shrine Maiden until promotion and then instantly swap her to FK, and then use at least one of my Arms Scrolls to get her close to being able to use the Bolt Naginata. Birthright's enemies tend to be pretty crappy and have low res so it's surprisingly easy to one round them with magical weapons if you have even a small amount of magic yourself.

I got the gold prize! And... it sucks? I think the Hunter's Knife is supposed to be one of the worst weapons in the entire game. It's a brave weapon but it has terrible might, and belongs to a weapon type that absolutely wants to be used on enemy phase as much as possible and really doesn't appreciate the self debuffs.

At least that's what I thought, anyway. The game doesn't list the debuffs it gives the people you actually hit with it, and those debuffs are insane. Str/mag/skill/speed/luck -2, def/res -5. That's every single stat! You could absolutely shred a boss with this.

Unfortunately I have only one dagger user and his rank is merely D, and probably won't rise much beyond that for the rest of the game. So I'll just sell it for a nice amount of gold.

And then buy a Lightning tome with the profits because it's on sale and forges are super good for Brave Weapons. That's an effective 4 extra might normally, and 8 extra might if the user's fast enough to double. Definitely enough to hit ORKO thresholds it couldn't normally...

Unfortunately my Arena combatants are not helping me win any ores. Your mother wouldn't have lost this fight Selena!

Yeah I'm not even trying to fit these in the character limit anymore. Coming up with weapon names is hard.

C supports for Shigure and his parents, B support for Ophelia and Seigbert. I've read Shigure's support with his dad so many times that Jakob initially being unsupportive of his son's artist talents is a breath of fresh air.

One more paralogue before I face Takumi's wall. I have no plans to use Sophie as a combat unit but her paralogue does have some item rewards...

It's Sophie! And she has Corrin's bright green hair. I guess she'd be easy to find in a crowd?

Are these portals to the deeprealms one way? Because if they're not then it must suck to walk into one accidentally.

This map isn't hugely difficult... but it is somewhat annoying. It's a defeat boss chapter full of Berserkers, Sorcerers, and mounted units. Dealing with them isn't too bad if you don't care about the rewards.

But if you do care about them then you have to keep these idiots alive. These Villagers will run straight for the boss with 0 regard to what's in their path. There is absolutely no benefit to them arriving at their destination, yet they will head there all the same. This game has no rescue mechanic so you can't even pick them up... If you're familiar with Awakening's Paralogue 3 then you know the pain of dealing with them.

Keeping them alive puts a soft timer on the mission, since they will head in the direction of many strong enemies that can kill them in one shot and then eventually the boss who will definitely kill them in one shot.

Sophie is also here, although her terrible AI is explained by the horse she's riding on being out of control. I don't actually know what her AI does since I always recruit her on turn 2, but as far as I'm aware she'll charge towards your group until Silas speaks to her and recruits her?

The boss of this chapter is a level 20 Malig Knight. He's one of the many paralogue bosses that can be captured, and apparently he's a fan favourite to grab. Malig Knight's a great class and his stats are certainly high, but looking at him I always thought he seemed a bit too slow to be useful as much more than a distraction. I have never actually used him though so my opinion is pretty much irrelevant.

As a boss he's not very threatening. He doesn't move so you can just shoot him down with any bow user. Otherwise I guess just hit him with a fast sword or tome user or harass him from range where he's weaker.

The enemy stats aren't quite as confusing as last paralogue's, but they're still a bit odd. The higher level Paladins have equal strength to and lower defense than their lower level counterparts but are otherwise better.

Unit slots are getting somewhat tight again. I need to get Shigure his Rally and marry Leo and Felicia... Camilla and Ophelia can stay home because they're slightly overleveled. I would prefer not to bring Xander but he still needs supports and his bulk will be useful for rushing ahead to keep the green units alive.

This initial enemy formation can be somewhat annoying. The Paladins are just close enough to attack you but at the same time far away enough to be hard to target from your starting position. Time is of the essence if you want to save the villagers, so you'll need to cut through them and head to the left fast.

Silas grabs Corrin and heads north to recruit Sophie. In Awakening Chrom could recruit every child unit and had special conversations with his own children... There's no such luck for Corrin unfortunately.

I have so many stat blessed units but Leo cannot count himself among them. Even his magic is screwed, it just seems high because I gave him a Spirit Dust.

The Merchant class has some funky animations and I wish I could show them off. Both Villager and Apothecary are kind of "joke" classes with lots of goofy attack animations that make them look completely incompetent, but Merchants refine them to make the silliness feel intentional on the attacker's part.

That's all but the Paladins gone. They're hard hitting and annoyingly bulky, which makes most of my army not want to be in range of all three of them.

Xander doesn't fear them but he can't exactly hurt them all that much either. When I reclass him to Hero he'll double more consistently in exchange for slightly less bulk.

Sophie charges towards the action and the perfectly safe Villagers charge right into harm's way for no real reason.

There's two rewards available in this chapter, one requires 5 Villagers to survive and the other only 3. I see one Villager has volunteered himself to be the one guy who doesn't survive yet still allows me to get every reward.

"I'll need to borrow your horse for that by the way, I left mine at home."

Sophie's got some quite high base stats thanks to her parents, although her bulk is a little on the low side. She inherited Sol from Silas and Draconic Hex from Corrin. Were I planning on training her up I'd have given her Nobility to increase her EXP gain, but instead I gave her DHex so I could use her for debuffs just in case I ever have spare deployment slots. All she has to do is chuck a Javelin at someone to debuff their stats by 4 each.

I was under the impression Corrin's high magic growth might translate to Sophie having high magic too. That... wasn't the case, unfortunately! At least her other stats are alright. She'd make a fine filler unit but my army's crowded enough already.

Oh and she gets B ranks in both weapons because she joined so late. If you wanted to make her a Hero you could promote her into a Great Knight and then instantly Heart Seal her to keep the axe rank, but I did not want to do that.

Shigure's fast on offense thanks to Darting Blow, but he's not so skilled in actually killing anything and needs help to get EXP. That Beast Killer I didn't end up buying would have been useful here!

This is the first and most deadly of dangers the Villagers must face on their entirely pointless quest to die for no reason. This chokepoint is filled with Berserkers and Sorcerers, a combination that's very hard to tank effectively. Xander's my best bet but even he doesn't like taking hits from magical attackers. Thankfully you can stick a unit right on the edge to only be targeted by one of them.

You know Xander you would get a lot more dual guard points if you didn't insist on critting absolutely every enemy you fought. I really wish there were weapons that couldn't crit but could activate skills like Sol.

This would not have killed him but it was another "easy chapter makes my brain not work" moment. I forgot that physical units could actually damage Xander and potentially leave him in kill range of this one guy.

Standing where the Villagers want to stand is a good way of slowing them down. Unfortunately there's no way to halt their advance entirely...

Also these guys do not move at all, which makes this area look a little more dangerous than it actually is. And yes the green units will willingly stand next to them even if there's no other enemies around.

Seems like the magic units are spaced out just enough that you can fight them individually while only being in danger of one other one at a time. How handy!

Doubling Generals is weird to me, I'm so used to every single one having Wary Fighter. Sometimes it's nice to meaningfully outspeed the slowest class in the game.

Some of these Strategists have weapons, some don't... I'm guessing the ones that do are always promoted no matter when you do this chapter. For some reason staff users don't always seem to get given weapons when promoted in optional paralogues.

Leo your levels are too bad to justify stealing kills like your older brother. Don't make me force you to start hitting things with your sword for 0 damage again!

HP! Would you believe that Gamble is not a good skill for an inaccurate unit who uses the Bolt Axe and Fire tomes as her main form of offense?

Nice! That's the exact sort of level I was hoping for from Wyvern Peri. Or well I was also hoping for speed but it's a but unreasonable to expect that from a unit that's already capped it.

Have I complained about these green units enough? Do I need to complain some more? They are stupid and I hate them.

Shigure makes a case for using him as more than just a rallybot, while Nina continues to get great levels and yet still feel too slow for my liking. I hope I haven't ruined her potential by dragging her through Merchant for so long.

...crit avoid is hard to calculate on the fly when it's no longer just equal to your luck and most of it comes from supports. I didn't need to bait this guy with Elise but I did want her to gain EXP.

Oh yeah and reinforcements will start popping up after a little while. Apparently some super strong wyverns will appear next to the boss on turn 12 who are quite nice to capture?

WHY

FOR WHAT PURPOSE

Well time to rush to finish the chapter before these idiots get themselves killed. I've never really liked skills like Aegis - % chances to take less damage tend to be very unreliable for keeping your units alive, especially when they only reduce some kinds in the first place. Xander is quite vulnerable to magic though, and tomes are one of the damage sources Aegis can potentially make less harmful...

I've heard people claim that some of these paralogue bosses were originally intended to be recruitable characters... At least in a real sense, not the Capture sense. I do wish we'd gotten them instead of the not really necessary second gen ones.

Well Elise didn't get Axefaire, but she did manage to get Rally Strength. I think I might just take her along for Takumi's chapter like this, it's not as if being a flying unit is super benefitial in a chapter full of bow users anyway. Alternative I could do another child paralogue...

Xander stole too many kills for my liking. Elise and Shigure still have skills they need to unlock!

Is it? What do horses want? If they want defense then no wonder Silas quit being one.

Oh yeah and we got an Energy Drop and a Partner Seal from keeping the lemmings alive. No story acknowledgement for doing so though. I like to think we killed them all and took their stuff.

Didn't manage to get the Leo / Felicia S support either... Do I just press on and actually progress the story, or do I do yet another child paralogue? It's not as if I'm running out of them, I think I've got 3 left and then a fourth as soon as Leo's married off.

Next time: something

Cheating at a raffle? I sentence you to 1 year in jail! No! Two years! Three! Four! Five years! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
Somebody call for an ant?

If you do another child paralogue you deny yourself the opportunity to have magical muscle woman Elise smash takumi's pineapple face in with an axe.

Counterpoint, you would deny yourself Percy.

Edit: Wait, I meant Dwyer.
