Viewership for the world series:

Awful Announcing posted:

The hopes for a strong viewership number for Tuesday’s World Series Game 6 were snuffed out early on. The Braves took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, doubled it to 6-0 in the fifth, and never looked back en route to a 7-0 win and the franchise’s fourth World Championship, and their first since 1995.

Game 6 drew 13.968 million viewers on Fox Tuesday night, a disappointingly small increase on the 13.64 million viewers that watched Sunday night’s Game 5. That number was up 10% from last year’s record-low Dodgers-Rays Game 6 on Fox (12.627 million viewers), but down 19% from 2019’s Game 6 between the Nationals and Astros (16.425 million viewers). Historically speaking, this year’s Game 6 also managed to top the 2014 Game 6 between the Giants and Royals, which drew 13.372 million viewers on Fox.

Overall, the series finished with an average of 11.74 million viewers on Fox. That’s up 20% from last year’s Dodgers-Rays series (a record-low 9.785 million viewers), but lower than every other World Series matchup ever. 2019 isn’t the most fair comparison since it went seven games and the seventh drew 23 million viewers, but even through six games, that series averaged 12.40 million viewers, more than half a million more viewers than this year’s series.

All in all, this year’s World Series (and the MLB Postseason as a whole) was a nice rebound from last year’s nadir, but was still largely disappointing when compared to 2019 (let alone 2018 and earlier). A closer matchup in Game 6 would not have changed the narrative all that much, and a potential Game 7 also may not have had the impact that we typically see, given the small increase from Game 5 to 6.

This kind of sucks since I rarely watch live. I don't think Fox has an option to stream after the event.

I've tried searching watching it at my in laws a few times over the past year; it's down to the 1981 world series and SEC football that's at least 10 years old.

I thought they killed it like a decade ago. I loved Sports Century and that it occasionally had live games between like, Army and Rhode Island.

It's usually on one of the TVs at the gym, either on a Georgia-Georgia Tech game or something involving Michigan.

It could have been something very nice, but they quit trying at about the time YouTube started allowing longer videos. Even now, it wouold have been awesome had they taken the Casey Kasem's America's Top 40 approach and reaired This Week in Baseball and those old weekly NFL recaps. Hell, old SportsCenters. I think the original Classic Sports Network had a wider range of programming than what ESPN and its infinite library shows now.

I'm shocked it's taken this long to cut it.

Yeah gyms and hotels are the last places I notice it

It had a real, honest to god great niche when it started, and when I was in college, in the days before you could find nearly everything you ever wanted to see again on the internet. I will be sad it is gone but I haven't watched it in at least a decade either

Hot take: Fox's scoring bugs are the best. At least for baseball and football.

No clue how they managed to get that for basketball.

I'm just going to blame Bally Sports for bringing back the giant tickers last season which influenced these other stations that it was a good idea.

ESPN’s mildly annoys me because they don’t always show a shots on goal counter like everyone else does. TNT’s is fine because IIRC it’s mostly the same as the old NBC one.

Obviously they wouldn't be playing on a Friday but curious if the media contracts for, say, the SEC actually forbid that from ever happening or if the language is the same and it's simply understood that they would never want to do it or even schedule their programming in a way that would raise the question.

If it was a friendly, they wouldn’t have moved the Cinci-USF game. But it’s a World Cup qualifier, against Mexico, which is guaranteed to be one of the higher profile games of the year. They kind of had to.

As always, blame goes to FIFA for putting so many loving international windows into the schedule.
