Will they work in an explicit reference to A Christmas Story? Maybe someone in 1988 will call it a bomb that will be long forgotten 30 years later, or the kid in the present will see it on tv and say that it sucks or is boring.

Which makes sense as it's the kid's memories, he's only going to remember bits and pieces along with the most important part of all, and it was based on a book of various anecdotes. That's what NPH's character is going for, well, except we know the exact year the NES was released.
