The Watsonian explanation would be that at the time a lot of deities were basically just dudes, who did regular dude poo poo while also being deities, so her being a regular person wouldn't necessarily faze them. The Doylist one is that Foster seemed to be doing the best he could while also being racist. At least he acknowledged that they made their own civilizations and it wasn't secretly the vikings or aliens? Still not great, but you take what you can get with old-rear end comics.

It's not a comic where nothing happens; it's a comic where lots of things happen, but they're never interesting. Even when you would think they really should be interesting, they somehow manage to avoid being so.

Grim joke aside it's interesting to see you could still make something that didn't seem touched at all by Nazism in mid-late 1930's Germany. I'd figure we'd see at least one strip by now with something like them doing the Sieg Heil in one panel or a flag or such. A quiet rebellion by the artist?
