Eternals got a B audience rating from CinemaScore, which sounds OK out of context but is also the lowest rating in franchise history, on par with BvS and Green Lantern as superhero movies released in the past decade go. Does not bode well for the box office.

Cinemascore is weird. Anything below an A- is bad, pretty much.

I respect their stubborn refusal to change. They’d fit in here.

There is a story that Disney had to step in and tell him to quit working out and juicing up because the eternals were supposed to look "normal".

There is another story about how he was difficult to work with onset. Ask in the cineD thread.

Venom got a B+ and was a massive success. Gemini Man got the same score and was a huge bomb.

A movie like Venom doesn't need word of mouth, since there's a lot of people with bad taste that were alive in the 90s still around.

Obviously the Eternals have basically no name recognition, but it's still an MCU movie.

apparently Marvel Studios/Zhao didn’t even ask him to get jacked for the role (this is backed up by Brian Tyree Henry saying in interviews that he wasn’t asked to lose weight), he just thought he should do it because he was playing a superhero

Long Live The King!

I saw it at an early screening this morning and really enjoyed it. I'm probably one of the few here even in BSS that actually really like the Eternals even in the comics so I kind of knew the basics of what I was getting going in. So it's no surprise that I got more out of it that some other people did.

That being said I can see how this movie is just not going to play as well with a general audience. It probably has the least amount of humor of any Marvel movie. And what little is there there doesn't even always work outside of some lines from Phastos an Gilgamesh. People like their humor in the Marvel films and this one really doesn't deliver a lot of that.

I think the bigger let down with the movie is that it doesn't really balance the cast very well. Perhaps a smaller team would have been a better idea though I really couldn't even begin to suggest cutting any of them. Ironically enough Kingo was probably the person I could have done without even though I like Kumail in most stuff I've seen him in. I think Thena and Makkari were the ones I really would've liked to have seen more time given to.

Random spoiler thoughts

Did not see the Ikaris betrayal coming since in the comics he's one of the most prominent hero Eternals. I like what they did with it though and thought it served the story well.

And in the same way, Druig turning out to not really be a bastard was a surprise and I loved it. Him and Makkari is something I'd like to see explored further down the line.

The depiction of the Celestials was fuckin' awesome and as a big Kirby Eternals nerd I loved every second Arishem was on screen.

Keeping with my reputation for loving characters nobody else does I am also unsurprisingly a big Black Knight fan. I wasn't given a lot in this movie and I've never really seen Kit Harrison in anything but I definitely enjoyed what I saw and I think he can do good with the character wherever they decide to take it next.

Thank you to whoever decided NOT to even once depict Makkari's speed powers in a slow motion scene. I've posted before about how I find that very lazy every time there's a speedster and seeing her move fast all the time just looked so much better. Probably my favorite depiction of that power ever on screen.

I also think one thing that's really causing a lack of audience connection with the movie is that the movie doesn't really have an audience surrogate character like is common in these types of movies where we're thrown into something this unique. There's no character that's getting introduced to this world, you're just thrown into it with the Eternals and the plot just starts moving. You think at first there's going to be a character like that and then they leave him behind immediately. Also the first act is structured very oddly with the flashbacks. It almost seems like the film doesn't really settle into a forward motion until halfway though.

Yeah the way they showed Makkari's powers was great. I enjoyed when she used them in the fight scenes.

Also some speculation regarding the ending and character futures: I do not think Ikaris is dead. I think he's going to be recovered on Earth or floating in space, but without his memories and he's going to join up with Contessa's Dark Avengers. He's going to be the Sentry stand-in for the team.

I'm also super excited that they're going to pair the Black Knight with Blade. Gimme some MI-13 related stuff with them, please. And make Blade a specialist in the occult and not just a plain old vampire hunter.

On that score my personal guess is that Ikaris is dead (because he flew too close to the sun), but The Machine will make a new version of him. Assuming they want to bring him back of course

This was my take too.

I really enjoyed this overall. I can understand why some people didn't care for it so much. It is long, but there's a lot of ground to cover.

One of the things I really liked, is how little explanation all the regular folk needed, and how straight forward the explanations (which we don't really see) must have been.

"OK, so, yeah, I'm an immortal person with super powers, from outer space and my friends and I have to try and stop the end of the world"

"Oh, Ok, cool. I wish you told me sooner, but it explains a lot. I obviously knew that aliens existed since about 2012, and literally half the people I knew disappeared 5 years ago. I can't do much to help, but I'm rooting for you, and I support you. If you get back, and the world doesn't end, let's talk about secrets."

This does bring up kind of an interesting question. Thanos snapped half of all life out of existence - Would Celestials fall under that category or are they kind of outside of the influence of the gems? Since the Eternals are synthetic life forms made from cosmic energy would they be susceptible to the snap too? If so, I think that's how you get a pass on Arishem's judgement of Earth - The snap was undone by a team of heroes which was 90% earthlings by weight. That must count for something.

I also think that could be a future tie in to Galactus. Galactus is a match for a Celestial in a straight up fight, but like any good predator, he's not going to go after guarded prey, when other, easier options exist. But, if there's no longer a baby Celestial larva in Earth's core, then Mama Celestial will lose interest. Now that sweet juicy planet is ripe for the taking, full of life, and relatively unguarded.

This is a possibility too. But either way I think a blank or reset version of Ikaris without his memories will be the MCU equivalent of the Sentry on the Dark Avengers/Thunderbolts.

I thought it was fine. Really don't get some of the online critics (not Those ones, like actual online critics) who keep threatening to drop hour long hot take videos. I agree with Kurt Busiek who says he wished we'd gotten time to spend with them as characters and it probably needed to be more than one movie but it was alright. Take more than this to stop the MCU train. It's not even a Dark World.

I was wondering the same thing. It was very telling that none of the Eternals discussed whether or not they had turned to dust. It's like how Infinity War killed Vision before we could find out whether or not he counted.

That’s a weird thing for him to say if so. Getting yoked up like he is isn’t easy or quick, but it’s not like you need a multinational corporation financing your development either.

Unless the implication is that Disney has a line on HGH and trenbolone, which I frankly wouldn’t doubt lol

Yeah he said it was his choice because he didn't want the first Pakistani superhero on the big screen to be shlubby.
And he was trying to say that his quick transformation was guided by top experts in their field, expensive, and made easier by having an actor's lifestyle so the average nerd shouldn't feel bad if they goes the gym and don't become vascular over night.

I rather liked Eternals, but I’m also a big fan of their comics so I’m going to have a different take than most audiences. The movie definitely opened weird, I would’ve preferred a longer sequence where they’re all just living their lives before we develop into flashbacks, and an audience insert could’ve helped a lot (beyond just Kingo’s valet, who was wonderful).

The Deviants were also pretty wasted as an idea. Arishem’s justification for making them seems poorly thought out, and the ones we see in present day are just a feint to get the band back together. Except doing so explicitly leads to an outcome Ikaris didn’t want, so he should’ve just killed them in Alaska and then Tiamut wouldn’t have been stopped. There was also a clear and direct parallel between the genocide that caused Druig to leave and the entire Eternal/Deviant conflict I was waiting for anybody to make, especially once Kro gained sentience; I thought he would make a plea for his species to not be slaughtered wholesale but nope he’s just monster better kill him.

Despite some odd motivations and pacing I still enjoyed it, I liked that it was a different and weird movie in the MCU and I appreciate that it had characters you didn’t start out relating to because they’re so alien and lifeless, whether that was an intentional decision or not. Somebody mentioned it could’ve been better as a Disney+ show with an extra few hours to flesh things out and I can’t say I disagree with that assessment.

I don't think Ikaris knew that the Deviant that killed Ajak would develop her power to heal which is what I think it uses to evolve the other pokem... Deviants. At best he might have thought he could blame Ajak's death on them if anyone found her but as far as he knew the Deviants weren't going anywhere and Ajak's celestial orb wasn't transferable.
