good to hear the phsyicsi turn off for wall jumping and arentn part of how the game handles, absolutely glad to finally have that confirmed guess its easy to say the game controls worse when you remove the ways the game controls objectively better from being considered. anyway as i was saying youre mad, most likely crying also at this point, and are bad at the game

goon delusion: the game controls badly. the physics are off.

objective reality: the most speedrun game in history due to the masterful cotnrosl and physics which allow mechanical domination to the point of pulling off endless severely precise tricks and skips with ease. a powerhouse of platforming excellence and gold standard in the genre it created for over two decades.

Super Metroid was the main fixture at GDQ for a long time but that was mostly because of the whole 'save/kill the animals' thing.

Until one year when they did a low% race and three out of four died to Phantoon and someone got real pissy about the whole thing, anyway.

Checked speedrun.com, thanks google, and they claim it's Mario 64 as does Guinness book of world record. By the formers counts on its own Website Super Metroid is in 7th place. It has an entry list on the wikipedia page for notable games to speed run for what it's worth. Doom and Quake are also there, but not on speedrun.coms top 10. Metroid as a series is 9th in popularity.

But that's one site so who knows.

Mario 64 and Mario at large seems to be the most popular game/series to do by a wide margin however.

Wait I don't think you can beat Dread without wall-jumping. Aren't there parts where you're required to wall jump or am I misremembering?

Nope, though without wall jumping a lot of sections would be tougher

I would say it would be incredibly difficult to not do accidentally since it's just touch wall while jumping, press jump

I played through super metroid for the first time in like 15 years. Controls took some adjustment, she really falls slowly compared to newer games.

I blundered through, collecting the powerups I could remember (missed the wave beam, got to Ridley, then doubled back to find it, ugh). I made a point to defeat draygon in honorable combat (no cowardly grapple beam trick for me!) and it was like a 10 minute battle.

When I finally beat the game my final time was 3:02 :negative:

Tbf despite knowing about the grapple beam trick since 1994 I've never actually gotten it to work a single time.

It's quite satisfying to pull off...but so was pumping missles into his belly. First time I played though the game (eons ago) I didn't know the trick, and he was the hardest boss in the game for me, so subsequent playthroughs were all done using the trick. It was nice to beat him the old fashioned way this time

I enjoyed X and Y a lot and thought it had a good balance of features without making the game drudge on.

Probably the most fun I have had with a Pokemon gen since Red/Blue.

I've felt like most Pokemon games were a step down since BW2, which had a really fantastic postgame. Wish the Pokemon World Tournament feature would come back to one of the future games since that was always my favorite concept---a huge assortment of different battles starring a trove of past gym leaders across gens.

Legends seems like a big swing at least, which I prefer over the fairly mediocre stuff they've been putting out lately

I really hope it's good! would love a cool mold breaking game from GF following all of the backlash around the last gen

Sword/Shield are almost comically barebones as a pokemon game. They're not bad games, but if you're ranking games, I'm not certain you need to lay excuses on people for putting them behind Gen 4.

As a big fan of fire types, this is a fair point.

But also Sw/Sh gives up basically all dungeons/caves/etc for that. The antagonist(s) also don't show up to basically the last minute, and it feels super weird, and the postgame is basically non-existent. (Although I don't remember how much D/P had in the way of that.)

But on the other hand, Marnie's battle music is a bop.

You know what? I'm replaying Steamworld Dig 2, and it's even better than I remember. If your complaints about Hollow Knight boil down to its pacing and its combat difficulty, SD2 is basically the perfect game.

Something like 4 bosses with more atmosphere than difficulty. The movement feels better, you get more tools more quickly. The death penalty is less stressful, the regular combat is puzzly and positional, the upgrade system is broad, flexible, and interesting.

It even has the metroidvania version of botw shrines, where nearly all of them have a baseline goal that's doable and an occasionally fiendish "going for 100%" style goal, puzzle, or secret.

Steamworld Dig 2: Better than HK (for people who had reservations about, or bounced off of, HK).

I just want to catch them all yet Game Freak won't let me in Sword/Shield. Plus all of the models for the older Pokemon are literally reused from the 3DS games, there's no excuse for not having them all. It's not like SMTV where they actually spent time remodeling the monsters (and there's still 200+ of them)

Even though Diamond / Peal are very mediocre Pokemon games they're still fine to go through. I'm actually looking forward to BDSP because it will be a classic Pokemon style game to run through. I know most people are disappointed with what it's become, but for me personally, I will get a lot of fun out of it.

I don't think you have to wall jump in Dread but it's so easy to do even by accident that I did it plenty. I also bombed jumped a few times to get a handful of items without having to backtrack later.

I think there is one spot in Dread you may have to bomb jump to escape if you get to too early. It's the shinespark puzzle below the green teleporter in Burenia. The first time I was there I grabbed the missle pack but decided to punt on the puzzle--I can't remember if I was actively blocked or just didn't want to commit to it yet, and the only other way out is a tunnel with bomb blocks you have to bomb jump to get back up to.

Bust Rodd posted:

As long as you don't save in the pit you can reload and get the energy tank without falling in. I think there's a missile expansion there too but you could come back after getting space jump if you want 100%.

I think one of the sticking points for me is the price tag.

Like, maybe it's not fair, but it's hard not to consider pokemon games used with the hand-held game price, and SD/BP feel like they don't do much to earn the increased cost?

I'd probably a bit more down for a simple pokemon journey if it was coming at a budget, not at the price I expect to pay for a big new exciting nintendo game.

e: This is by no means to say you should not have fun with it.

Setter is Better.
the problem with Dread walljumping is they do the thing where you aren't allowed to climb a wall with the walljump because it kind of locks the air control when you jump off a wall. I get why they did this, it gives them more control over access, but I definitely prefer being able to wall-climb.

The silliest part of Dread is when you get a power bomb expansion early it reports "Unknown item" and doesn't actually give you power bombs. Which is a thing because even casual backtracking will reveal a couple of these.

The only other time I think this happens in the series is in Zero Mission when you('re forced to) get space jump "early", but in that case Zero Mission was a remake of Metroid in which space jump didn't exist, and Samus doesn't get access to the post-Metroid powers until the post-OG Metroid ending sequence.
