So wait, isn't the blockchain limited to very few transactions a second? How is it going to handle all the amount of reddit posts and votes on it?

A friend of mine is heavily into this stuff, and listening to him talk about it sounds like someone basically having a conversation peppered with completely random words like CAKE, TOMB, ATLAS, etc, like he's trying to activate me as the Winter Soldier or something. Every time I speak to him he's talking some new token which is apparently simultaneously the best thing in the world that solves a problem no one even knew they had, or realised they could solve before (DeFi solves everything, apparently). I keep hearing him talk about APRs and returns of several hundred or thousand percent. Where the gently caress does this money come from to realise those percentage gains? Is it purely greater fool theory Ponzi schemes on steroids and getting in on it on the ground floor? "Launchpads" are the key, apparently. With regular stocks & shares I understand that gains are basically a function of fundamentals and speculation, etc - but those are "sensible" numbers. I can't for the life of me explain logically how these things create (out of thin air?) hundreds or thousands of percent gains in the space of weeks, etc?

It's a combination of greater fool theory and pretty naked market manipulation.

it's a buncha randos repeating all the investment scams they spent the last forty years watching billionaires pull thinking the form of the scam was the important part, not the material assets or the influence to keep your money and stay out of jail when it all goes to poo poo. Throw in a little gambler math where only winnings count, not losses a huge portion of the crypto market is "backed" by organizations like Tether, allegedly in dollars, except turns out they don't actually have those dollars and have been inventing value out of thin air, lol whoopsy A Wizard of Goatse fucked around with this message at 19:34 on Nov 8, 2021 |

I guess the plan is that they're going to waste the money on the gas, and then later expect people who opt into this poo poo to pay for it. There's some convoluted scheme where the compile every subreddit's points each month and then distribute them to users, so it won't be a token per post or upvote. Beyond that, I'm not assing myself to figure this out.

Crypto boosters who managed to wrangle a little bit of money out of it are so goddamn insufferably stupid. You aren't special, you weren't prescient, you're not smart, you're gambling. It's okay to just recognize that you're gambling and that you had just as many chances completely outside of your control of losing your rear end on it as anyone else had. You still do!

Venture Capital firms are investing BILLIONS of USD (not just USDT) into crypto influencer projects that pay writers, artists, and design world people to promote the future of web3 and tokenized propaganda. The playbook is simple, and they’re acquiring "governance" tokens in all these new DAOs, easily making their money back from the other "whale" investors, while still holding large amounts of the speculative tokens. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-18/venture-capital-makes-a-record-17-billion-bet-on-crypto-world https://www.vice.com/en/article/dypzbq/surprise-the-future-of-media-involves-a-crypto-based-popularity-contest-mirror vice posted:The editorial team behind Dirt, the aforementioned Internet culture newsletter, used Mirror to fund an entire season of content for their free Substack and raised around $30,000. Instead of trying to drum up financial support for individual articles, they used the site’s “Editions” tool to sell a collection of 131 animated NFTs, each depicting a publication mascot called “Dirty,” which looks like a smiling cartoon mound of dirt. According to co-founder Daisy Alioto, a culture journalist and audience engagement specialist, the NFTs were also a playful exercise in world-building around the brand—a sort of digital equivalent of the New Yorker tote, grounded in its millennial audience’s nostalgia for pop culture ephemera like Pokemon cards and Beanie Babies. the future is here, in a vc backed influencer mlm marketing war

he says he lost his NFTs because they hacked him while pretending to help him with some setting in metamask. my guess is he told someone the secret phrase to his account or something and they stole it. of course in an actual decentralized world he'd be hosed but because opensea and other places that sell NFTs only care about money, they're not going to let this dope who keeps buying NFTs hang out to dry so they helped "ban" the NFTs that were stolen.
