Mean Gene did remind me a lot of Lance Russell in how they were amazing eyes of the storm, so to speak. Always gave just enough.

Lance was an absolutely incredible interviewer. Incredible at everything...

He was allowed to have a personality, be funny, make jokes, interact with the wrestlers naturally, etc.

The interviewers now may as well be an Alexa device asking the questions. They're not allowed to stand out or take any shine away from the wrestlers. It's just a product of Vince hyper-controlling everything and not letting people just act like normal people with human emotions and motivations. It's all got to be so scripted and watered down and homogenized.

Gene stands out because he was a character for a lot of years in WWE, then rode out his career in WCW where he still got to do the same shtick as WWE moved more into the "interviewers are just nameless, faceless fodder" era.

I will say Renee Young managed to stand out but that’s partly because she is just that charismatic and partly because of Talking Smack 1.0

I think she could have been an Okerlund- or Heenan-level talent as an interviewer or commentator if she'd been in an environment that wasn't WWE.

nash wrecked his knees playing basketball before he wrestled. saying "gently caress it i'll just wear pants and not put any more stress on my hosed up crooked joints" was a good decision

i don't know if it's a trick of the light but his right leg looks fuuuucked. the whole thing bows inwards.

Kevin Nash pretending to rip his quad in the WWE is a level of self-aware trolling that allows me to forgive his WCW transgressions

God the WCW commentary desk with Tony and Scott Hudson is so easy to listen to once they've jettisoned Mark Madden. That guy is like an anchor around their neck.

Not back in the nWo angle. When they brought them back to help Sting during his match with HHH.

When was the first time WCW copied WWF by doing a backstage segment? Not an interview or promo, just wrestlers interacting in the locker room or wherever.

Backstage stuff has been a part of wrestling forever. I think the question is more about the invisible camera style vignettes.

At least I thought.

There was the famous "Jimmy Garvin attacks the Midnight Express after they burned Ronnie Garvin" bit. I think the Horsemen also jumped The Rock & Roll Express backstage too.

I'm up to Septmeber 98 and still loving Bryan and Vinny.

Especially how that one of the big "owns" of WCW was that they were so stupid they booked DQs in a No DQ match.

And now it turns out raw did that like 8 times in 98 alone.
