"Recovery" is the only remotely positive choice and 3/4 of the people didn't pick it.

Whatever you think is the correct choice, that's overwhelmingly people who don't think the economy is going good for them. And if the polling weighs more people who disproportionately don't have money(genx and younger), then there you go.

Actually, that's not what it means. The conversation we were having about this a page or two ago was that a lot of people are PERSONALLY doing better, but think that "the economy" is doing worse. There is a difference between the two, and other recent polling that emphasizes the difference.

I will also say that I feel like the fact the results are THAT close to each other might just mean that a lot of people don't really know what the terms mean. Besides that, what are you supposed to pick if you think "the economy in a year will be about the same as it is now"? Presumably the intention of the pollster is that "stagnation" would be your pick then, but it has a really negative connotation. I feel like the "Do you think (you/the economy) will be better, worse, or about the same this time next year?" phrasing is much more neutral and clear to the listener. That said, I think the polling people were looking at from a day or two ago had like 60% doing better personally but 66% believing "the economy" was in trouble, so public sentiment seems to agree that something is still missing from "the economy" at the moment (whether it be too much inflation, stuff out of stock, less people at the mall, or whatever)

E: I was looking at the rest of the poll and some of the results are wild - 11% say they would vote for a third-party candidate if 2024 is between Biden and Trump. It's more than twice the number that say they won't vote or haven't decided who they would vote for.

Interesting to see the breakdown on the recon bill - 47% for, 43.5% against, 9% undecided.

I was looking at the bottom for any crosstabs that might be useful for trends and noticed that the sample skewed fairly heavily towards the wealthy - is that typical for RV screens?

Yeah, I don't really disagree with that either, it mostly seems like it would encapsulate the same things as the "right direction/wrong direction" question to begin with, so if you want to answer a specific question about the economy you should just ask it (i.e. food insecurity, personal wages up/down, concerned about losing your job, unable to pay bills, w/e)

I think it's pretty smart rhetoric. He's appealing to the low self-esteem of the vulnerable young men who make up the alt-right, promising salvation in traditional masculinity and the fascist political project. None of this is actually isolated to economic questions either. For nearly 30 years of falling crime rates, and falling violent crime rates in particular, a large percentage of the US population remained utterly convinced that things were getting worse rather than better.

That was and still is a tough nut to crack, since it made things harder for politicians that didn't want to go hyper "tough on crime" penal populism. Not least because the solutions intended to hasten already declining crime rates in a way that's actually good for people just don't line up well with people who earnestly if delusionally believe things have been getting worse and worse even since the genuine peak of the late 20th century violence. The fact that American society is still in fact violent explains some of why, but knowing that fact doesn't present any easy solution that many of the communities harmed by the war on crime still demand more, or at least balk when you propose serious steps to dismantle it.

This dude really has a finger on the pulse. People don't want the nanny state giving them more help, they've gotten enough. They don't want billionaires taxed. They're worried about the debt. They're worried about pork. They hate the democrats for doing good things.

Biden needs to spend his time doing nothing (legislatively) but, instead, should somehow win back all his lost popularity before the midterms. Doing more is a political risk and see how badly BBB is polling. Heavens to Betsy!

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/maybe-biden-should-quit-while-hes-ahead-200343146.html

It never occurs to people like him that maybe Biden wasn't well-liked as a politician or person in the first place. His high polling numbers were a comparison with him perceived as the only available alternative. Or maybe it was the promise that he and democrats would do good things.

Wanker's Corner is an actual place in Oregon.

Wikipedia posted:

In 1895, the Wanker family moved to the area and bought land where they built a store and tavern, an area later to become Wankers Corner at the intersection of Stafford Road and Borland Road.[2] It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.[3] The two buildings currently located at Wanker's Corner are the Wanker's Country Store and the Wanker's Corner Saloon and Cafe. It is not a recognized community, it has never had a post office, nor does it consistently appear on maps of Oregon (although the AAA map of Oregon shows it in an inset). The United States Geological Survey classifies Wankers Corner as a "locale": "a place at which there is or was human activity".[4][5]

Gaige Grosskreutz, 27, also testified that he had pointed his Glock pistol in Rittenhouse's direction but that he never intended to use his weapon and only advanced on the teenager as a last resort because he thought he "was going to die."

Rittenhouse, 18, has been charged in the deaths of two men and with attempting to kill Grosskreutz during racial justice protests on Aug. 25, 2020, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where police shot and wounded a Black man, Jacob Blake.
