No matter how one loves, there are always different aims. Love can take a great many forms, whatever the era.
Imagine I posted that comic where the guy is "maybe society not so great" and then the other guy is like "but YOU society, hmm!!!" in response to all of the people saying "well, you don't have to buy both versions" as though that means something.

I’m not gonna decry Game Freak because their games are popular but calling them two separate games is a bit of a stretch. They make one game, and then they mix it up a bit

You just buy the one version and then ask friends or internet strangers to send you the ones that don't come in your version if you're the 2% of players who try to get a complete Pokedex. It's pretty easy to not buy the game twice.

"You don't have to buy both" doesn't really go far enough, "it's an actively weird decision to buy both" is the true stance

Just play a pokemon. Statistically you're unlikely to complete the Pokedex which is the only thing affected, and if you did try to then you have a mountain of goons to trade with

Is there anything I should know about using it as my secondary Switch on my same Nintendo account? My ex girlfriend has the original one, and my main understanding is that we can't play the same digital game at the same time on the two Switches, is that right? And while the games are owned through my account my understanding is that she should be fine to play anything as long as hers is considered the primary Switch.

The secondary switch needs to check the internet before it can launch games, to make sure the primary one isn't playing the game. My oled was my secondary then I went somewhere without wifi and it refused to launch any games because it couldn't verify.

I dunno maybe I was doing something wrong but be advised I guess. I've since made the oled my primary

Literally noone is being like "i gotta buy both" and it's pretty much all "they've made a very thin excuse to market it as two versions."

like, it's also really easy not to buy loot boxes, particularly in games where you can also earn the currency through grinding. and yet it's still something that should gently caress off from gaming.

Haha yeah I'll be the first to criticize Nintendo over their dumb decisions but being mad about pokémon being the exact same ROM is just ridiculous.

You don't have to buy both of them to play the game. If you do buy both of them, what do you want em to do? Create a separate identical file n add a bunch of junk code so it's not the exact same ROM anymore? Logistically it makes zero sense

Oxyclean posted:

What would your proposed solution to this be? What can they do to make this fair to the consumer or whatever

That's a really bad comparison. Nintendo doesn't offer a way to purchase Pokemon or in game purchases at all (within actual mainline Pokemon games at least), and they even give away legends constantly. The very genesis of the franchise was social interaction and that's one of the things that has kept it so popular.

No one is literally saying "I need to buy both versions" but they're acting like it.

Good to know, thanks. Fortunately I only really use the portability for playing in bed and stuff, so always-online requirements shouldn't be a problem.

because the revelation that the version difference in the latest game is just a simple code flag is shining a light on it?

Like, maybe people just didn't really think too hard about it before now. They just kind of accepted "two versions of pokemon" is just the way they do things. As well, old games, the cart also held your save file, and was cheaper then home console games, so the argument for buying the other copy had more arguments for.

I just find it funny people are defending it with "it encourages trading & you can find a friend with the other version" like everyone doesn't already know that, and as if no other game has managed to figure out how to encourage trading without selling multiple versions.

KingSlime posted:

Sell "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl" and at the start of the game they ask you "Do you like diamonds or pearls" or something, and that determines the unique stuff you can get.

If the issue is that making two versions of the same game is predatory, yes, I would agree with that. But that's the entire identity of the franchise and consumers who buy into it are clearly okay with it. This is nothing new or recent for pokémon.

Just because you can peek into the code doesn't make this anymore or less egregious in my opinion, still the exact same scenario it has been for 20 years. I do like your idea of hey which version would you like to play? Some compilation games such as the mega Man Battle Network 5 DS game did do exactly just this.

But then would you lock the other content away? Because if you don't that would eat into sales that the pokémon franchise operates around. It might not be "fair" to the gamer, but at the corporate level this needs to happen. It's the entire purpose of franchise and they are pretty transparent about how this works/ what you get when you only pay for one version

I think the move is to just not play games that do this, but I don't fault pokémon fans for thinking this is a complete non-issue.

Even as a kid never thought that they coded two near-identical games twice (maybe using Unity made it even easier for them though).

No other game has ever come close to Pokemon's level of success either. You seem to think Gamefreak hasn't "figured out" something when they've figured out that what they have works and prints an absolutely obscene amount of money and so they have no reason to change course.

back in the red and blue days ,only one kid had both versions and two Gameboys. His double Mewtwo team was unbeatable and if you tried to get him to trade you mons from the version you didn't have he would, but only in exchange for starters or legendaries. later on another kid got a GameShark and started handing out mews, and expressly would not give the first kid one, and it caused bad blood for a comically long time

it's not a bad comparison because Nintendo absolutely knows there is a non-zero amount of customers who will buy both. Two version exist entirely so someone can potentially buy both, otherwise, they'd just make it a choice when you start your game, and it would achieve all the same effects of making players trade with one another.

It's the same logic behind poo poo like "pay to skip grinds" - oh well it doesn't give you an advantage, they're not selling you something you otherwise can't get. Like, it doesn't make it less weird or "unnecessary"

I really don't think criticizing the selling of two versions of the same product should be seen as particularly weird or controversial.

This is a question you answer when you go to the store or eShop to purchase the game.

It's a non-issue that people are trying to turn into one. Even at my youngest and most influential years I'd never bought both versions. Ironically, the only times I've gone out of my way to buy both versions of a generation was Sun/Moon and the Ultras, and that's because I'm working on a complete 3DS library. And those are the worst mainline games in the franchise.

It was awful when mega Man Battle Network decided to do it so I'm inclined to think its just dumb. But I also don't care about having a complete pokédex or anything like that, so I personally am not bothered by Pokemon doing it.

the two version thing is specifically designed to trigger people's FOMO which is kind of sketch
