it's not a bad comparison because Nintendo absolutely knows there is a non-zero amount of customers who will buy both. Two version exist entirely so someone can potentially buy both, otherwise, they'd just make it a choice when you start your game, and it would achieve all the same effects of making players trade with one another.

It's the same logic behind poo poo like "pay to skip grinds" - oh well it doesn't give you an advantage, they're not selling you something you otherwise can't get. Like, it doesn't make it less weird or "unnecessary"

I really don't think criticizing the selling of two versions of the same product should be seen as particularly weird or controversial.

At this point you're going to bat for maybe 10 people. This ain't even a gambling issue like live service games. In fact, it's more grind because someone who buys both versions is going to spend 60 hours doing the same content twice for a minor difference when they could literally ask a friend or go on the internet and get the exclusive Pokemon within minutes. Someone who buys both versions is making a stupid choice and it's one they're well aware of and not even compelled to.

You're right, but the trading and showing off your pokémon appeal goes down significantly when you both have access to the exact same monsters. Ultimately it's absolutely about money more than anything but it does encourage multiplayer interactions a little bit more largely due to that FOMO and wanting to show off your version specific mons to your friends with the other version

That said, we're talking about a franchise that is wildly successful about selling pieces of cardboards with made up fake pretend scarcity so really it just goes back to money

It sounds like maybe you're not familiar with programming and the simplicity of it is throwing you off

If the issue is that they are marketing two versions, that's its own conversation. The way it was implemented though eh it's a non-issue imo

It would be nice if for remakes they really just bundled both versions into one but this is Nintendo/Pokemon we're talking about

I always thought the version thing was to get kids talking and trading more. Like there's a big social aspect there, same as with any other collectible hobby.

edit yeah more or less, here's an interview, seems like the designer thought link cables were so cool that he wanted trading in the game, and shigeru miyamoto suggested different versions to assist:

quote:

Junichi Masuda: As you know, the founder of Game Freak is Mr. [Satoshi] Tajiri, so when Mr. Tajiri talked to me about the idea he had... At that time, you could connect Game Boys with a cable, and you could play -- and battle by playing in, for example, Tetris.

But for this one, he had an idea of trading monsters. When I heard about that idea, I thought it was an interesting, fantastic idea. However, you then have to realize it, and make it into a game. The concept itself was very interesting, so you could expand and see how you could develop it into one game.

When Mr. Tajiri went to talk to NCL, Mr. Miyamoto actually suggested, "How about creating different cartridges? There are different Pokémon on each cartridge, and people are willing to trade the Pokémon."

Pokemon makes sense to do two versions of since they have a limited amount of Pokemon, so making certain ones exclusive to the other will encourage people to trade. Just enough exclusives to make trading worthwhile and fun but not too much so that you think you have to buy the second version (a thing they don't encourage you to do [because they want you to play with people who bought the other version]). Something like say, Animal Crossing, only needs the one version but still encourages people to play together and swap items because there's thousands of items and collecting every item in the game isn't an intended goal.

You can literally just make it a choice when you start up the game - the games already lock you into one save file unless you use multiple accounts to work around that, so it would have the same effect of "I have access to these pokemon and my friend has access to those pokemon" with the added bonus that if you really want, you can start a new game and see the version differences first hand.

They also have like 700+ pokemon, so "limited amount of pokemon" which honestly feels in the ball park of furniture that existed in New Horizons when it first game out. Why don't they lean into shinies and just throw more pallet swaps in, and depending your game seed, you have some variants that are more or and less rare, bam, even more reasons to trade.
