Yeah I've gone through a bunch of streaming devices and the AppleTV (1st gen 4k I think) is the only one I've tried that Just Works. No crashes, no errors, no lag, you just get in and watch. Don't have anything else in the Apple environment but it's not that much trouble.

The only negative for the Apple TV is they still won’t let it bitstream audio. Not really an issue for streaming services, but limits you in Plex a little. Not something that super bothers me, and why I’ve owned gens 2 thru the first gen 4K.

Granted it's not as slick as an Apple TV, but you plug it in and it just works with an ultra simple grid set of icons.

In my experience Roku is definitely a solid option too. I definitely don’t care for their hardware/UI/general consistency etc compared to the Apple TV but they’re great boxes. The fact that you can get them for so cheap and they can attach to the back of the tv and whatnot is real nice. They’re fun little devices. They definitely know their place in the market and seem to give you exactly what they offer.

Rokus are the best option if you have an older TV that doesn't have 4K and you just want to watch stuff on it. My parents have a 28 inch TV from about 2007 and there's no point to really put something more expensive than the Roku on it. The price difference isn't as much as it used to be, but I still don't think it's worth it for an older TV or a TV you're not using as much.

Roku future is really looking iffy with the crap they are doing. We are all familiar with the Youtube TV / Youtube drama, but now it looks like it may be leaking over to Prime. https://www.reviewgeek.com/102031/oh-no-roku-might-lose-amazon-prime-video-too/

I have ATV4K's in my living room/master bedroom, Nvidia Shield in my office, and a Roku Premiere Plus something or other in the spare bedroom at my Ma's house and the ATV4K is the snappiest by far and the Roku is the slowest. The Nvidia is a great option for Apple haters but is expensive at $199, especially when you can get refurb ATV4K's for $129. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...fb066a64012549e

Remember that if you have a Roku and download the channel before it is removed from the channel store, (as of now) you get to keep using that service. I still use YoutubeTV even though it is not available for new customers and you can even access it in regular YouTube. I am honestly surprised that there have not been “secret” channels set up to access those services that get blocked.

Related to this discussion a bit: if I have movies purchased on Vudu, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google is there a good way to keep track of them? I have movies anywhere, but there are some that don't participate and it's impossible to remember which one to check for total recall for instance. How do people keep track? Is there some sort of program or other software that can link them all together, kind of how some of those video game trackers do?

About 20% of my library doesn't participate. It'd be nice to have a full aggregator. Obviously it's licensing reasons so the aggregator doesn't even have to play it within itself like MA. It could just open the respective app!

I’ve been watching a lot more YouTube lately, and the amount of ads is starting to get to me. I looked into signing up for YouTube Premium to remove the ads, but I literally lol’ed when I saw it’s $15/month. gently caress THAT Has anyone done the trick where you VPN to Argentina and sign up there to only pay about $1.50 a month? Is that something that’s safe to do on my main account, or should I make a separate account specifically for that? Also, I’ve seen some places say that you need to enter an Argentinian billing address to make it work. Obviously that won’t fly with my American credit cards, but would it work if I just bought a Google Play gift card and used that to pay? Or would I specifically have to buy an Argentinian Google gift card?

I bought a $40 google play gift card, it it would not use that for payment. I just used a prepaid Mastercard and it worked fine. It’a 119 Arg a month which I think is like $1.40. I am using my main account, worse I feel they can do is just disable premium. I didn’t want to re-do all my subs and stuff. I’ve been using premium for probably 5 months.
