I'm talking about media as in news and current events, which my examples should have made clear. Jake is a journalist for some of DS9's run, but it's barely present otherwise, and we don't see other people discussing media, they just either know the latest or have heard rumors.

"River of Souls" isn't a good movie, but it is the equivalent of repeatedly hitting the Star Trek franchise repeatedly with the Love Bat over all the holodeck tropes: from unauthorized duplication of a person to holocharacters becoming real.

I really love the dueling episode, it's such an interesting insight into the Centauri, from the opera talk at the beginning, to the multiple types of partying and politicking. I think it even has a cooler take on honor dueling than sci-fi usually does; with Klingons it seems like you're supposed to take them at their word when they talk about honor and glory through combat, but with the Centauri, it's just a prestigious hobby. Ursa's glory through combat is something he wants no part of, the duel to the death is just for show to exploit legal procedure.

I don't think the fighting choreography is much good, maybe you could excuse it as being some kind of alien form of martial art like Lennier's ridiculous surfer kung fu, but I think the awkwardness of the death scene feels more real.

The B plot seeds the Markab, but I wonder if that thing that infected Sheridan was a Vorlon? Or maybe an ancient proto-Vorlon, or a lesser-Vorlon creature?

It's analogous to the duelling colleges that were popular among young German upper-class types in the early 20th century, which was a bit of a hint really because we all know what those young German nobles were doing 20 years later. Anyway, these duels were obviously only fought to the blood and losing occasionally wasn't a big thing because a facial scar was considered dashing. So it's a system of stylised and ritualised combat where you're deliberately not trying to kill your opponent. It has no practical application outside of duelling and not even within duelling when the duel is to the death.

Paramount made them stop explicitly referring to holo-porn as much because they are cowards.

Though there was that Voyager plot where they made a holographic version of Tuvok’s wife for him to gently caress during pon farr.

Do all the B5 novels require that you have seen the whole show beforehand, or are there some you can read earlier while still watching through the show?

There are 14 comics and 18 novels that make up the Babylon 5 extended universe. None of them are essential, but some are nice to have. Here's a quick rundown on when you can read the various bits without spoiling anything:
  • After season 2: comics #1-11, novels #1-4 and #6
  • After season 3: novels #5, #7 and #9
  • After season 4: comics #12-14, novel #8
  • After season 5: novels #10-18
Comics #1-4, novel #9 and comics #12-14 make up a story and are probably the highlight of what's out there. Comics #5-8 and novel #7 are standalone and provide nice background for the show. Novels #10-18 are less closely tied to the show but still generally pretty good. Everything else is summarized on the Lurker's Guide and you should probably read those pages after you finish the series.

Of the novels that are considered canon, I think all of them except one take place post-series so you do need to be up to speed, and the one that takes place mid story covers pretty important plot and character beats and would require having seen season 3 to understand everything

pretty much all the B5 novels are really bad and there's a reason why JMS does not consider them canon. one was infamously written in a week, if i remember correctly, and a lot of them feel like they were written by people who'd never seen the show and had only been told about it briefly. of the ones that are considered canon: the shadow within is generally considered decent, as is the psi corps trilogy. the technomages trilogy depends on how much you like technomages and weird retcons. the centauri prime trilogy appears to be okay but rarer than the others. the psi corps trilogy is my favorite set of all the b5 novels. i think all of them are pretty hard to find. they were rare when they first came out and i don't think were ever reprinted.

Straczynski considers To Dream in the City of Sorrows to be canon, as it was written by his now-ex-wife and features a foreword by him.

Of the trilogies, the Centauri Prime and Psi Corps trilogies are readable, for what are essentially licensed fan fiction works. The Technomage trilogy was pretty rough, though.

They were never re-printed, and never released in eBook format, so, yeah, you can expect to pay north of at least $40 for used copies for most of them.

Don't trust the skull.
The Psi Corps trilogy is very good. The Technomage trilogy is... decently written, but a lot of it doesn't really feel like it fits in with the show.

The Centauri trilogy features a subplot where Vir mind-controls one of Londo's wives into falling in love with him. It's garbage.

Like many human operas, this one is a tragedy. Urza's family is about to be destroyed by the New Order in Centauri politics, and his only way to protect them is to fight his best friend to the death... and lose.

It's all just another price Londo pays. He helped make Reefa powerful, so he has to kill his best friend. I think the regret starts coming back into it here.

The Psi Corps, Centauri, and Technomage books are based on JMS’ outlines, the earlier ones (which are from a different publisher) aren’t. Apparently there was another series of books planned about a decade ago that were so bad JMS refused to endorse them, too?

edit: Checking old Usenet posts it looks like the publisher tried to gently caress him on consulting fees and he refused to have anything to do with them.
