It's the kind of  theory that some on here will consider a bit too "reddit-y" but I still think Howard paid off Mutt to close the site down. He (Howard) was constantly talking about how awful the fans were on there to him and Beth, her book reviews on Amazon being the zenith of that late SFN era.

Could Howard's people have threatened the site with legal troubles to get his name taken off it and Mutt took the hint and decided it wasn't worth the hassle?
