Okay that's enough v-tuber chat for tonight. Let's please talk about something different.

Ranking of Kings has been a really fun and vibrant show so far, definitely my anime of the season. It even has a thread:

i'm being a bit jokey about it, but i have actually heard my same complaints from anime-onlys about the ep2 structure (Kage flashback insertion and recapping)

at this point the anime is so patchwork and the manga scans so far behind, nobody limited to english could really say what is changing and if the changes make a meaningful impact though. like there's a huge thing they removed but have circled back around to hinting at, so generous interpretation is they're less withholding things for ~mystery~ and emotional manipulation and more for trying to satisfyingly restructure what they can in their 23 ep run. unless they just keep putting that element off i guess?

This discussion would probably be better put in the ROK thread but I think they are trying to restructure the manga in a way that makes episodic sense while maintaining some flare for dramatic mirroring of scenes. Like remember that this is a webcomic that was self published, so not sure if it even has an editor, but the chapters just kind of go pretty much like "ok this happens, then this, now maybe we show a flashback, ok then some more stuff happens" thats very reductive but it looks more like things are just going as the author thought of them vs "this is a structure we are following and we show THIS flashback NOW because it informs what comes next". Spoiler example: Like Domas being asked to be Bojji's swordmaster is just a random flashback in the story, but in the anime they put as the opener to the episode where BIG SPOILER Domas betrays Bojji at the end.

The anime adaptation reminds me of Game of Thrones, where they tried to have specific scenes in each episode have some thematic through line that brought all the character stories closer together than than just a random collection of "things happening". They could do this because in GOT the book each chapter is a characters POV but they were not limited in that way in the adaptation. I feel like WIT Studios is doing something very deliberate there in cutting back and forth between all these different scenes per episode. Many of the webcomic chapters I've seen including RAWs are really focused, so 1 will be bojji doing something, 1 will be daida doing something, etc, but they cut them together in the anime.

Its a pretty thoughtful adaptation so far I've gotta say so I don't think its sus at all.

k-on has kind of a weaker first season and then the second season is one of the best sol anime ever made. new game has kind of a weaker first season and then the second season is one of the best sol anime ever made

i mean ep2 feels like, not that thoughtful or maybe thoughtful in a wrong-headed direction. but since then i have not had a lot of complaints to lay at the anime's feet. Forest King and the Apeas flashback just feel weird regardless of format, and i get why the anime moved the latter.

I think they put Kages story front and center because it's a great flashback and Kages a main character, it's incredibly randomly placed already in the webcomic the anime just randomly places in a way that fleshes out a main character to get you onboard early.
