somethingawful buzzfeed would be grimly funny. though they have been somewhat handsoff from reddit and it, like these dead gay forums, have barely changed at all and still using somewhat janky software poo poo. reddit even had jailbait and other poo poo for many years and still has ton of porn subs, so who knows.

While Lowtax was overall better known and SomethingAwful is obviously far more influential than Battlecruiser 3000AD and its successors, Smart's reputation on the Internet was pretty much entirely negative and (among gaming communities) fairly widespread. He was accused of going onto any website where he was being badmouthed and spending days/weeks/centuries in flame wars. In the early 2000s Lowtax looked like an Internet success story whereas Smart looked like an angry failure.

And yet it seems Smart is able to live a comfortable life despite his games not being great commercial hits, and as he's grown up he's mellowed out. Lowtax seemed to treat SA as his sole source of income (besides his parents) and his personality clearly did not improve as he grew older.

they don't know all alien abduction experiences can be explained by people thinking saving private ryan was a documentary

Every time a website is redesigned this process is coopted by the stake holders who figure out a way to add in a shitload more ads and tracking and analytics and partner integrations and it makes the website worse.

If there are zero business people and zero tech people involved at all you could pull off a successful redesign by staying away from these industry standard best practices, but this is pretty rare.

This is the main reason I like SA, it reminds me of the old internet before every byte had advertising associated with it, don't redesign anything. I think we accidentally ended up with this site because Lowtax could never get along with any tech bros or business people, maybe that was his best move.

Derek Smart also seemed to be capable of introspection and also seemed amused by the roasting/attention he received for his B-movie like games.

SA isn't really built *for* anyone. It just kinda congealed out of questionable coding practices and neglect. ZDR and Jeff kept it going despite itself. I'm glad astral is finally being paid like a real professional to overhaul and replace the bailing wire and gum the forums run on without web 2.0ing it.
