When someone who you interacted with commits suicide, it's not unusual to ponder if you could have somehow changed that outcome.

In mid-May of this year, I was contacted by an old client who wanted to know if I would be willing to write a resumé for a friend who was not on the forums. I said sure.

As you can guess, he then told me that the friend was Lowtax.

I was a little dubious, but I don't really have the luxury of being able to reject a client, so I said okay.

Lowtax contacted me on Saturday the 29th. I told him that I didn't have any availability until June 4th, although I could maybe squeeze him in on the 2nd.

"Oh. I wanted to do it this weekend so I'll just give it a shot myself," he said.

I told him "I'm sorry, I'm 'attending' Balticon this weekend."

And he said:

"It's cool, nbd. Hope you have a good time!"

That was it. I didn't get to see what he had in terms of an "extensive" resumé, or find out how he would have described what he'd done with his life over the past 20 years.

And over the following six months, his Patreon sunk more, and he did worse poo poo on Youtube, and even if I had written a resumé for him, I can never promise to get someone hired - only to improve their odds.

When the news came out - especially when word started circulating that it had been suicide - I felt a little... potential indirect guilt. If I had cancelled my plans, I wondered... cleaned up his resumé... could I have maybe helped him get into a better financial situation, possibly prevented this?

It's a weird sort of relief to learn that, no, it wasn't because I didn't help him get a job, it was because he was angry at his ex-wife and the judge.
