An attempt to explore outside the bubble. 'Drive by' sniper commenting on right wing rags (never read the replies) is a little hobby when I'm a bit bored with the housework.

I live by the rule of "don't touch the poop"

Scrolling through the replies occasionally to various right wing folks on twitter is about as far as I go because crikey, people are nuts and universally convinced their echo chamber is the one true echo chamber. I say as I post in my own echo chamber.

There's a whole lot of different readings and translations of Sun Tzu, from ones tailored to communist insurgencies to ones tailored for business meetings, but I know that the one popular in the Dom Cum brainosphere definitely does make a huge deal out of weaponized stupidity.

With trying to know the enemy, is the Telegraph comments section actually representative of tekegraph readers/tory voters, though? I figure it would be skewed in a number of ways, toward various kinds of obnoxious blowhard with high confidence at they know everything. You know, the kind of deeply broken human being who is motivated to post opinions about politics on the internet.

Arcuri gave her diaries to the veteran journalist John Ware in 2019 after he made an ITV documentary on her relationship with Johnson.

At Ware’s request, Arcuri has now agreed to allow publication of some of the extracts following Johnson’s statements last week about public probity, including how MPs who break conduct rules “should be punished”.

quote:

Potentially more damaging are excerpts that allege Johnson bragged about ignoring advice from his staff who urged him not to help Arcuri promote her tech company Innotech.

After Johnson had agreed to Arcuri’s request to be the keynote speaker at the launch of Innotech, Arcuri states in a diary entry for 27 February 2013 that Johnson boasted to her how he’d rejected the advice of his staff not to attend. It states: “I just want you to know they came to me and I crushed them. They said: ‘You can’t do this Innotech in April.’ I said: ‘Yes, I can, I’ll be there.’ I only want to do this to make you happy. How I do wish to make you satisfied.”

What the hell is going down with Rupert Murdoch? He told Boris to destroy the BBC!?

quote:

Boris Johnson's sister has claimed that Rupert Murdoch told him to 'get rid of the BBC' during a visit to the Prime Minister's country house. Rachel Johnson claimed the media mogul 'dandled' Mr Johnson's son Wilfred on his knee at Chequers as he made the case for scrapping the licence fee-funded broadcaster.

Miss Johnson, 56, a presenter for the LBC radio station, told an industry event this week the long-term future of the BBC was going to be an 'increasing struggle' amid competition from streaming and subscription services. She said part of the pressure was coming from the likes of Mr Murdoch, 90, who was making the case that the corporation was a threat to competition.

Maybe but we're both demanding to hold state power and the political will to rearrange society as we wish and your vision to inspire the masses to support of you and give you that authority is tweaking the tax code. It's dorky and incredibly limited given the tools you'd need to implement it.

MMT has nothing to do with the tax code. It's a framework for understanding that currency-issuing governments aren't constrained by a lack of money, that government spending isn't funded by taxation, that money doesn't "come from" the private sector being all wealth-createy, and that government deficits aren't especially bad, but surpluses are because the government's surplus is the economy's lack of money (by definition).

This applies to any political system, from neoliberalism through to mild jam socialism, so long as it uses government-issued money.

For the last several decades, claiming the opposite of the above has been used by all governments to justify why we can't have nice things. So understanding how it actually works seems quite valuable in convincing people that better things are, in fact, possible.

And on your point about the rich not deserving their wealth, the MMT framing of the purpose of tax is a lot closer to that than the current version, as I mentioned upthread: None of this liberal "well regrettably we must take a (not too big) portion of your wealth to barely fund some shoestring services" - you tax the rich to destroy their money, because it's damaging to society to leave it with them.

It's the Brexit Party with a new name (for obvious reasons), so is as Faragey, gammony and fashy as you would expect. Their logo is a big white arrow pointing hard to the right. They are not ones for subtle symbolism.

Look at it this way, liking gay people was a fad five years ago and now that the novelty has worn off people are trying to get back to the status quo of hating gay people. But you can't just jump in with hating gay people so they're just using fear of Trans people as the crowbar to dislodge solidarity and build support a bit like how when everyone hated Nazis so the smart ones just pivoted to blaming Muslims for all the worlds ills rather than Jews.

The UK's a rentier state, so whenever we get too tolerant of trans people, the old money steps in to protect strict male primogeniture.

Exactly. It's an incredibly tiny step to pivot from "Men in dress want to watch your little girls in the changing room" to "Men in dresses want to watch your little boys in the changing room" (they will lose the "in dresses" part once they're sure it's acceptable to just target gay people outright again).
