Remember that diorama you "made" in fourth grade for a report on the Panama canal that was made out of foam board and modeling plaster and there's no way you could have done that yourself but your parent(s) spent an entire evening "helping" (read: doing it for) you? It's like that except with more tax fraud. See also: those pinewood derby cars that are supposedly made by children but are actually made by dads trying to dunk on other dads. Gamepass is 1$ for 3 months. They give you a 90% discount on the first month and then award you two free additional months. Time to find out if mechwarrior 5 makes me feel 10 again.

Also twitch streamers are primarily playing PC games.

Mehta purchased a duplex in January 2020 and planned to flip it into a single-family home, but local housing ordinances prohibited that. He estimates he lost tens of thousands of dollars before renting out that property on Airbnb, and now makes sure to do his research before buying.

An ESD wrist strap is a good idea, but if you don't live in a high static environment and you can regularly ground yourself through other means (keep a grounded object nearby), then it's not strictly necessary.

Heh, I may or may not have an actual wrist strap kicking around but I always rig something up out of sheer paranoia. Alligator clip from a PC case to a tinfoil bracelet sort of thing. I watched a couple more videos and I am not that stressed about this. Of course I could gently caress something up terribly in a momentary muscle spasm or something but mostly I'm just feeling annoyed that a $50 thermal mod is necessary for a $1500 electronics component that's been in production for a year plus. I am trying to figure out if the PNY 3080 is just the reference footprint and I can do everything from behind the backplate without taking the board out, that part is going to be some tedious obnoxious poo poo. Steve is knocking that card, but moving the entry level to 12GB is good for users (you won’t have problems early like you would with 6GB cards) and good for Nvidia (make the standard accepted minimum 12GB and those 1060s/1070s out there that people are huddled around look inadequate that much faster.)

it's mostly crypto at this point imo. it is also a bunch of things mentioned and at launch it was also bonkers demand from covid redirecting money to other things and very low target (lol) prices. but this level of insane sustained demand and willingness to stomach insane pricing is because people use them as money printing machines.

i got a new job in april that sucked up a lot of my forums time (aka we're in office a lot and i can't sit on the forums) and i know this is not adding anything to the discussion but i can't believe the situation is worse than ever My gaming PC died in July & was reporting "VGA" light on the motherboard, then my mom had to move in with us & then we all moved to a bigger place so I just turned it off and cried. Luckily it was a physically damaged SATA connector on my boot drive that was causing the machine not to POST & throw all sorts of wacky errors.

NVIDIA Image Scaling goes open source, NIS now available to all gamesquote:The company is open-sourcing its Image Scaling technology, which has been present in the drivers for years. Today, however, the company is making them much easier to use. I didn't realize this was an existing feature. Maybe not for the 970?

I think it's the scaler they introduced with Turing
|
# ? Nov 16, 2021 15:07 |

They also updated it and are getting all huffy saying "hey guys, we've been doing this all along!" A driver-level implementation isn't as good as a software version that developers can integrate into games, though. You ideally want to render the UI at native resolution still instead of upscaling that too. The verge has an article that shows a few comparisons between fsr, the new image scaler version, and dlss: https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/16/22784404/nvidia-icat-dlss-spatial-temporal-upscaling-graphics

# ? Nov 16, 2021 15:29 |

Wasn't Nvidia's original spatial scaler just a Lanzcos upscaler? Seems like a better image upscaler tied more directly with DSR that also lets developers enable it in-game instead of all the fiddliness. At least exposing it through API means the average person might get some use out of it, but I always wince a little bit when devs let users mess with the sharpness slider, because no way that ends well. One objectively good thing I see out of this is Capcom hopefully supporting it since they don't do DLSS 2.x and Nvidia RTX.

Yeah being able to plumb it into the engine is a big plus over driver level scaling The new NIS SDK looks broadly similar to FSR, it's permissive open source and runs on whatever GPU Maybe there's some slightly different quality trade-offs but generally it's going to have similar flaws to FSR
