To be clear *puts sensible hat on* having a bet on the football can be fun, but it can also be and frequently is not fun.

Don't think you'd find many posters in TRP who'd argue that the relationship between football and the gambling industry in this country is healthy but unfortunately it doesn't look like it'll be changing any time soon. If you feel like betting is becoming a problem for you the gambling forum has some handy resources and info.

This is probably a slight overreaction to a relatively innocuous discussion but I just want to make sure we take care of our posting pals. I used to work in insolvency, I've seen first hand the sort of terrible situations that gambling can put people in if they're not careful (which the entire industry is set up to encourage you not to be!) and I'd hate to think it could happen to anyone in here.

I'm not your dad, I'm not going to tell you not to post about it or not do it. Just be careful everyone

im not a sports betting professional but i have friends who are and its possible to profit. its multi-billion dollar industry, you dont have to beat everyone, just some of them. not that i want to encourage anyone to try and make money as an amateur, you're extremely unlikely to do so. but even if you suck you probably wont be losing more than 10-20% of your bet in EV. so if you place a $100 bet you could look at it as betting $20 for entertainment.

the modern equivalent of the pools is putting on a £2 acca every weekend

which is kind of like the lottery in that on one hand it's objectively pissing money down the drain, even compared to gambling on a single match, but it's also not something that's going to end with you joining the french foreign legion so if it gives you £2 worth of fun then que sera sera

I do actually do a "pools bet" - literally pick 10 games I think are likely to be draws and chuck them in an accumulator - because I got in that habit a very long time ago. However I have to limit it to a 50p stake because most times the winnings on anything higher than that would bump into the £250k max payout, and somehow I think this makes me a smarter gambler.

(I do also bet on West Ham games but normally on likely worst-case scenarios and Moyes is loving this up for me right now)

I always do a big lol at "professional gamblers" talking about putting bets on. If you're any way actually good the bookies will limit you to 25p bets within a month or two. If they're not doing that you're a mark.

Listen to some of the guys who've actually made money gambling (and then lost it on drugs, women and cars,) and they're all on about getting university students to sign up accounts for them to even get the bet on. Go into the gambling forum here and you have guys betting $5k with no problem.

thats simply not true, you dont know what youre talking about. i know people who put down 6 figures in action a week, and are profitable over years. there's edges to be had. if millions of people (recreational gamblers) are losing percentages of every bet they make, theres room for a few pro's in there.

If you're a loser or look like you're going to lose in the long run, sure. A quick google for "Bookies + Limiting" or "Bookies + closing accounts" and you'll find all you want to know about what happens to accounts with an edge.

If you're getting on six figures of action a week you're a mark. Of course, if you're going to effort to get that on, using multiple accounts, VPNs, dodgy Asian sites, getting various people into different shops to put money on, signing up university students at a percentage of your wagering, etc. sure, you could be getting a lot of money on. If you're logging into Bet365 and allowed to regularly stake 50k on something the accounts lads are creaming themselves over you.

if millions of people (recreational gamblers) are losing percentages of every bet they make, theres room for a few pro's in there.

Also, this is hilarious. The bookies are just sitting their thinking, "Yes, let's take money from the losing accounts and instead of keeping it for us let's pay it out to some pro who's rinsing us every time."

If there's some famous "gambler" who's talking big about his bets chances are he's backed by the bookies and part of their advertising budgets. It's the same as the guys livestreaming slots, they're playing with the house's money and earning a wage as an "influencer."

The only exception to this could be the new US markets that have just opened that are looking to build turnover rather than profit. Any established market that isn't involved in marketing their book is closing accounts left, right and centre. Also, Australia, where there's legislation that says you have to take a certain amount of a bet at market prices if you've listed it publicly. But because of that Australia has shite odds.

Edit: Sorry Sex Ghost, didn't see your post as I was typing this up. I'll stop now.

again, simply not true.

one example that just shatters your aguement: Circa sportsbook in vegas. they will take $50k bets on the app from my friend who is a known pro gambler (very googleable, has been banned/limited by other vegas books etc.)

and "dodgy" Asian sites (often backed by some billionaire known to the community and ) offer similar to a different friend of mine.

and you havent heard about betting exchanges have you? where gamblers gamble with each other 1on1, and the house takes a small % to facilitate it. in those instances, you are literally not even betting against the casino.

quote:

yes thats absolutely true, for unbeatable casino games. you do not appear to be able to differentiate between different forms of gambling offered by operators. its laughable that you insist on putting "gambler" or "pro gambler" in quotes like it doesnt exist. have you heard of poker?
