the real problem is greta thunberg has been elevated to importance by the system that serves the very people she wishes to criticize. this is not accidental.

meanwhile, other climate activists continue to be ignored, imprisoned, and murdered

for whatever reason, what greta says seems to have captured the imaginations of a few people I know and they’ve taken more of an interest in our collapse and considered what it is going to mean to them beyond the mild inconveniences they’ve experienced so far. the people I’m talking about would read the bad news as it appeared and were broadly aware of the issues already, so there’s something about the emotional force she’s able to project that makes the connections more visible to a lot of people.

greta’s crack-pinging is happening faster than I expected and it’s good for the people who identified with her cause it gives them license to crack, too. it would have been more lucrative (and more probable) to take NGO money and say I loving Love Science, Cope! if that had happened I think some of these folks would have tuned out, but they did hear the “green new deal / build back better bla bla bla” and it’s like someone gave them permission to crack and move on to a newer stage where they picture in much greater detail what the future holds for them. many will probably conclude that they, personally, will be better off than everyone else and strive to maintain that. but some of these otherwise aggressively normal folks are picking up andreas malm or are more interested in understanding the responsibility of the corporations in all this, which is a little clearer for them to identify in our Post 2020 World.

i think a lot of people just don’t process the media very well without having a subject to observe and project onto, which is probably not unusual at all in human cognition. most of the climate stuff in the media before was really boring poo poo and charts that make you feel personally bad about yourself over things you don’t have that much control over.

i accidentally got a job in australian politics so it's been brought home to me exactly how much the people who should be focusing on climate change, are focusing on everything but climate change. the right wing is still either in full denial or blaming it all on china. the left wing, who are meant to be the ones caring about this type of thing, are either hyper-fixated on stupid "solutions" (we just need 90% of the population to go pure vegan and everything will be fine!) or they just keep saying "renewable energy! renewable energy! renewable energy!" without any effort whatsoever toward actually talking to the renewable energy industry, understanding the technology, or working out the massive cultural and commercial shifts that are needed to transition from coal to whatever their favourite non-coal power source is. it's just idiots talking at each other all the way down, agreeing that someone needs to do something without doing anything, meanwhile business continues exactly as usual. working in this environment is maddening, especially as i've landed in a party that's exclusively upper middle class whites who only care about yoga and almond milk and keeping their salaries.

PNW is one of my favorite areas in the entire world and I moved here for the mild weather and beautiful forests. Feels depressing that it's changing so rapidly already. It didn't take 50,000 years or even 50 years. In less than a decade the climate misery has become catastrophic. The region used to be projected as more safe and stable than most of North America during climate change lol.

Is that methane accounted for anywhere? Yes.
Is that methane accounted for everywhere? Hell no.

So you have to loving check each and every figure or number cited to see.

And that’s not getting into the different GWP estimates (some older ones are much more optimistic than we now know)

Or different leakage rates on the transmissions/distribution systems.

You add it all up and depending on specifics it is entirely possible that one natural gas plant on a particularly leaky part of the system could be worse for than a coal plant of the same size. (Note, that’s just climate. Coal sucks rear end in other ways that NG doesn’t like particulates)
