probably the internal security in cuba has indeed been cracking down on this, but if there was a huge groundswell of popular support for the protest you'd expect to see more than two awkward-looking guys on a square somewhere regardless of crackdowns

They are the leader of the "democratic" side of the world, so anything that's good for the US is good for "democracy" and anything that's bad for the US is bad for "democracy" even if it's democratic. Your country elected a socialist? Well that's democratic but it's bad for "democracy" so we'd better murder them and replace them with a military dictator, this may seem undemocratic but only to the uninitiated, twenty years of military repression that results in a capitalist country joining the "democratic" side of the world is a win for "democracy" in the long run. this worldview didn't end in 1991, the US just extended this paradigm to cover the entire world. honestly most of the time they aren't even consciously bullshitting, they are true believers who honestly think that they are doing what's right for democracy and justice even as they overthrow democratically elected leaders and put monsters in their place
