i wasn't intending to frame china positively, except in that marxism is inherently a more logical way to structure your economy. you can logically structure an authoritarian and politically repressive society, and you can have localized failures due to corruption or state-wide failures due to poorly applied ideas even in a hypothetically functional benevolent state

i mean like framing china more positively than the official line in the west of "china bad" doesn't mean anyone thinks it's utopian, any more than framing the ussr as better than "godless commie menace" ever meant that someone wanted to hug and kiss and gently caress stalin

China at least recognizes the deleterious effect of having people and entities around that have so much money that they are in a position to challenge the legitimacy of the state.

Blackrock's asset under management is 10 trillion, that's more than the US national budget in a year. Right now there is no confrontation because the right people are getting bought off, but what they go to impose a sanction on them one day, and Blackrock just says no?

In reality, in China, when you eat at a McDonald's, all workers smile at you, because they are happy to work under socialism and they are fairly reimbursed for their labour. It's a subtle difference, but if you visit, just pay attention, you'll see it.

marx predicated communism would take hold in england and america and predicted the merry ol proletarian lads would figure out how to implement the actual socialist calculation dealios

the actual socialist places failed in large part because they werent developed and it was just peasant rebellions. in most ways mao was to marxism what hong xiuquan was to christianity

now that the prc has developed, however, unfortunately they have developed every one of the problems of capitalism up to and including totalizing oligarchs

and what they are now focusing on cracking down on includes murder mystery rooms and gay peeps in addition to big corpos and real estate fuckery and theres that one guy, lu kewen, whos blaming it on the jews so i dunno about them necessarily not bein captured by reactionaries

Where did you get the idea that Mao wasn't versed in Marxism? While Molotov did say he wasn't a Marxist, citing that he'd never read Capital, this isn't borne out by the facts. Mao extensively studied Marxism, including the works of Marx that were available in Chinese translation, and he definitely read Capital, as is evidenced by the annotations he made in his copy. Further, this isn't really relevant to your wider argument. You argue that China failed to build socialism due to its material conditions, but then you say that Mao is some kind of cargo cult Marxist, which is not only irrelevant and a little idealist but also untrue.

Also, I think that views that the USSR and China were necessarily doomed because they did not go through a capitalist revolution before the communist revolution are misguided, especially considering that both the USSR and China went through a capitalist phase under the guidance of the Communist Party, and considering that they did genuinely make some progress in socialist construction.

Because as far as I know, communism is fully compatible with selling stuff for a profit, as long as the profit goes to the workers and not to a dedicated leech class that takes everything

no that's just the workers exploiting themselves. profit is extra labor time done by productive labor, in excess of the equivalent labor time they take back from society, and is created at the same time as productive labor realizing the value of the capital consumed in doing that productive work.

socialism shouldn't have profit imo. or rent or interest. just don't do it.
