This is going to be the next stage in the messaging, it lays the groundwork for violent resistance to climate activists, and it is going to be grassroots in nature. It is no longer just that climate change doesn't exist, now the line is that any disastrous impacts are either outright faked or were orchestrated by nefarious schemes for a nebulous authoritarian agenda. Because to admit otherwise would be to face reality, and these people do not and cannot live in reality.

They are everywhere, they are your neighbors and potentially your friends, they are gathering more and more scared and desperate people into the cult every day, this process of increasing mental hoop-jumping is short circuiting their empathy and rationality, and they often have a lot of guns.

And that should scare you, way more than the megastorms.

I find myself thinking a lot lately about how A) the extent to which local groups' ultimate survival will likely require coordinated cooperation to succeed once things fall apart and B) how likely it is that assholes like the ones you're talking about will absolutely gently caress that up grasping for very short-term "gently caress you, got mine!"s that will undermine any long-term prospects for the survival of everyone involved including themselves.

we're fukn doomed

Whenever someone ticks over from denial to a different context where they are admitting that climate change is happening and that it's really bad they are going to do it in the same ways they've approached and processed things in the past. Unfortunately it's not someone processing a new situation independently and it can just be some dumb rear end in a top hat finally letting themselves be a dumb rear end in a top hat about something new.

We are seeing this more because the harsh reality is starting to sink in on the fringes of public consciousness even if most of the western world still lives in complete denial. Someone I know admitted climate change is bad and that Joe Biden is terrible for it and that Democrats are going to get washed out in 2022 and 2024 but their coping mechanism was to set a future date where undefined things are going to happen. We will have Trump Blowback 2 in 2028 and will elect someone who will actually "do something" which will solve the problem? Therefore they can calm down because they've admitted the next 7 years are hosed, but only the next 7 years.

But conspiracy theorists are probably the worst since when we start having to do massive nationwide logistics to mitigate large scale disaster it will be the FEMA CAMPS meme. If an entire region loses access to fresh water and toxic refinery spills poison entire cities you'll still have armed groups of people trying to live off the land because they switched from not believing climate change was real to believing that it was geoengineering designed to specifically cause the spill to take their land.

I would say that's a self correcting problem since those people will demand to drink toxic water but it becomes a problem when they get mad enough to lash out.

Lifestraws are good and useful and not a bad purchase but if you've ever used one you know it's exhausting to try and get liters of water through it every day so it definitely isn't the best option for large scale or long term water purification.
