strange feelings re Daisy posted:I was searching Canadian social media groups for reactions and news on the flooding. In the process I found off-the-charts settler racism towards the Wet’suwet’en protesters trying to block a pipeline. Imagine being such a shitbag moron you cheer for big oil and the RCMP to crush indigenous environmentalists while climate change is destroying BC. Friend, some militia types rolled up and dismantled blockades last year while RCMP just stood there and let them do it. Cheering is one of the less harmful things the settlers are doing.

Sooner rather than later, a lot of people will be forced to make pretty harsh decisions to protect themselves or their loved ones. The more pronounced your moral compass is, the more likely it's going to be you who gets hosed over. The race to come to this particular realization will be and I feel the QAnon nut jobs and other broke brained specimen have a considerable headstart. It's tempting to start running as well. What are you willing to do when the shelves are empty for the third week in a row and your kids are hungry?

toggle posted:Is all this conspiracy poo poo happening because people can't control what's happening? Is it the same as all the anti mask/vax dogshit? Will people be protesting to stop "geo-engineering our land away" soon? Whenever someone ticks over from denial to a different context where they are admitting that climate change is happening and that it's really bad they are going to do it in the same ways they've approached and processed things in the past. Unfortunately it's not someone processing a new situation independently and it can just be some dumb rear end in a top hat finally letting themselves be a dumb rear end in a top hat about something new. We are seeing this more because the harsh reality is starting to sink in on the fringes of public consciousness even if most of the western world still lives in complete denial. Someone I know admitted climate change is bad and that Joe Biden is terrible for it and that Democrats are going to get washed out in 2022 and 2024 but their coping mechanism was to set a future date where undefined things are going to happen. We will have Trump Blowback 2 in 2028 and will elect someone who will actually "do something" which will solve the problem? Therefore they can calm down because they've admitted the next 7 years are hosed, but only the next 7 years. But conspiracy theorists are probably the worst since when we start having to do massive nationwide logistics to mitigate large scale disaster it will be the FEMA CAMPS meme. If an entire region loses access to fresh water and toxic refinery spills poison entire cities you'll still have armed groups of people trying to live off the land because they switched from not believing climate change was real to believing that it was geoengineering designed to specifically cause the spill to take their land. I would say that's a self correcting problem since those people will demand to drink toxic water but it becomes a problem when they get mad enough to lash out.

Lifestraws are good and useful and not a bad purchase but if you've ever used one you know it's exhausting to try and get liters of water through it every day so it definitely isn't the best option for large scale or long term water purification.

I'm not really in the business of protecting people's feelings, I feel, because... well, I think because it's a bit of an insult really? I don't know whether someone will crumble before this truth or not and assuming they will doesn't seem correct. More than that if they are scared it will only be through facing directly that they can build courage. They will need courage. I really am not a fan of analogies but let's see if this is worth anything: if you have a child and a relative who is dying and the child asks "Is my relative dying?" what should you say?
