china claims a hilariously large region as their territorial waters. malaysia and the philippines obviously take issue with this claim but it's very much a case of "well what are you going to do about it" the US sails a bunch of military ships around in the area whenever they want to show china who's boss there's large fossil fuel reserves under the ocean floor in the area which is why everyone wants it
