i liked the cuba part and ana but that was about it. it's telling that libs are losing their minds about how it's good because it "owns da chuds and chuds are MAD!!". like lol gently caress off it's actually extremely regressive if you look below the surface, and if you're only happy that chuds are mad then it's not good.

some better action than others. i think most craig bonds have been absolutely horrible aside from Casino Royale, so it's like hard to give much of a poo poo about it anymore

the ~chuds~ just work off the same script every time while replacing a few words as needed anyways without even watching the dang thing (or watching it and not admitting that they enjoy it) so at this point I am sick of hearing people talk about watching a thing because it makes the chuds (CHUDS!!!!) mad!!!

And yeah Italy and Cuba were the only good parts. The whole movie was directed well, the end had better action direction than it had any right to, but it just didn't matter. Heck, the acting was good too, especially Seydoux

I am sorta pissed that the pandemic set my expectation to be able to just stream new movies, and now here we are with a Ghostbusters reboot that looks at least tolerable, maybe but I have to wait for it if I don't want to go into the COVID mines

this one I would have paid $20 for, but nope, guess I'll watch this pirated copy of Ant Man and the Wasp instead

i've gone to a theater to see The Green Knight opening day and it was fine. like giant massive sprawling lobbies with no one there (the box office has been closed and they're selling tickets at concessions now lol); and a theater room with like 10 people maxed spaced far apart with massive open ceilings and everything. it's likely far more risky just walking on sidewalks with parklets or even grocery shopping. sitting far apart in an good-n95 should be okay but i guess locality also varies because cases here are also extremely small and have been for about a year.

not saying you should do it, and it probably won't be very good. but i'd hardly call it a covid mine compared to almost most any other activity outside the house.

I took acid at an Imax to see Burton's (awful) Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and that experience crystalized for me why I dislike the American theater experience in a way that I was previously unable to verbalize. In 2016 we got a projector, and I think since then the only movie I saw in a real theater was Logan, because I was on a business trip with nothing to do. So, I was already very much in the "wait for streams" camp, and pandemic theater concerns aside, now we have two small kids which pushes me even further down that road because it's so much easier to control the situation here, stop stuff halfway through, and also no one else has to hear our kids tantrum and ruin part of some movie for them.

Yes I am being petty and entitled; the point is, I like being able to stream brand new movies, even if it's $20 a pop. I like attending tech conferences online much more than flying to some giant city and having to pack sessions in between schmoozing and incredibly draining social circuits during which I'll be offered an endless stream of alcohol, caffeine, THC and possibly speed to Keep The Business going. COVID sucks, the American response has been uniquely awful, but being able to see new movies and new tech talks live from the comfort of my living room was actually an improvement on the former status quo and I will miss these things as they recede.

You're probably right in terms of safety, and if I didn't have unvaxxed kids, even though I don't care about this movie enough to go see it, it's certainly possible I'd risk a theater for something I cared about more. I'd be more likely to go to a concert, I don't think I've seen any live music since seeing Kurt Vile on Feb 14 2019, lol.

oh yeah totally fair. i definitely agree it's overall more comfortable. especially with kids. i think theaters will probably die off even after covid 'receeds' and streaming will be the main avenue outside of a few major cities where a theater still exists. i think we'll have some last-minute desperate grabs by big incestuous Hollywood to claw back and try to get people into seats again only for it to fail.

there is something to be said about a spectacle of a massive screen with a big lively audience though. just the whole room going dark and the boom of a dolby logo and the show unfolding and being bedazzled. people cheering and hootin' in sync is a good time and my favorite theater is a small ye olde theater here with tables, couches, pizza/alcohol servers and it's relatively tiny but a lot of fun for that very reason.

unfortunately only a few directors like Villeneuve do cinematography good enough to warrant seeing it on a massive setup whereas the rest are mostly watch-at-home dreck.

Yep. Also worth pointing out that due to this same lacked attendance + COVID stuff, you can actually rent out (good) theaters for like $200. That’s obviously unreasonable for individuals, but it’s a great time if you have friends to split the cost and make an evening of it. That way you can at least make reasonable inferences about everyone’s level of COVID riskiness, and knowing the people there can recapture some of the energy that would otherwise be lacking.

A friend organized one for Dune a few weekends ago, and it was a hoot.

I was tricked into seeing that second batman movie the with the dead joker.
And there was the scene where the joker is standing in the middle of the street and batman was riding toward him.
I was waiting for something super cool to happen.

Nope.
Batman drove by the joker, hit a wall, and did a flip.
The whole audience cheered,

and I have never felt so isolated from the general populace as I did in that moment.
