Released in 1992 and still relevant today. That's both impressive and depressing.

When I was younger I used to mix up Weird Al and Yakov Smirnoff and cause a lot of confusion among adults. Also I recently saw some older footage of Kid Rock, and it seems incredibly obvious to me that he was a racist parody of rap that kinda got some traction and pivoted to acting like it was sincere. He would come onto the stage in a stereotypical pimp suit strutting and talking the way old white southern men think black people act. I see his whole act as having been an aggressive — even violent — white male reaction to the way culture had been going and an early warning of what was to come. We went from Kurt Cobain and Shannon Hoon wearing dresses on stage and stuff like Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple to... Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit telling everyone to suck their dick.

Yeah, it's not as though Ken Paxton would be a big loss. Of course, Gohmert comes from a Trump +45 district, so he'd probably be replaced by someone about as much of a shithead.

I absolutely despise Kid Rock, so it's a little weird for me to come to his defense, but you're a little bit off here. He's from the Detroit area, and was heavily into break dancing and poo poo back in the 80s(something racists weren't generally cool with). A lot of white males have always been into rap, and you're just not getting where the zeitgeist was in the 90s WRT the pimp suit, etc. It's significantly more "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery" rather than 90s black face. In the super early 90s, Country was a complete has-been as a form of music. Then it experienced a sudden rebirth thanks to Miley Cyrus's loving dad. THAT was the negative white reaction to Rap/Black Culture, not Kid Rock. As the rest of us were starting to either add rap to our discographies or just simply accept it, there were a bunch of white guys that trended more rural and more blue collar that suddenly started listening to poo poo like Garth Brooks, and Country Music has limped on ever since.

Not sure if any other threads have a broad enough audience to ask this question too. Has anyone had family members or online groups spouting conspiracies about the fact that Kamala was President for a day or two? I'm sure there's been prediction that she would jadehelm or some poo poo but I hadn't seen much myself.

There was some article about how Biden would be under anesthesia for an exam for a little bit, technically making her president, so naturally I'm sure that's been extrapolated into her seizing control of all branches of U.S. government and installing herself as Queen Empress or some poo poo.

My coworkers listen to country, which means I end up having to hear the poo poo. Honestly, with the newer stuff I hear, the only way to tell it apart from regular pop music is that the country singers all have that country accent. Otherwise, it's drat near indistinguishable

I got into Country in the early 90s when I immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Beautiful country, awful time, so full of racism. Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Garth Brooks, all them started hitting big. Got out of it in the mid-late 90s. It's poo poo today, just pop stuff, have to dig for good artists and songs.

Wang Commander posted:Nah this is ridiculous. Blood family just is about who jizzed where decades ago, the meaning we've attached to it is basically just another construct of patriarchy and a convenient way for capital to make workers raise more workers. Family is a myth of origin. The breaking of that myth is something done by modernity/capitalism. Myths of origin are more than just stories. They also represent material support. One can ask family to do things(watch the kids for me please), or for money, etc. Sometimes it’s good to break that myth. But some people only make it with the support provided by the myth. The breaking of the myth to them is an attack on their ability to keep making it. For other people the harm of the myth far outweighs any material support they might receive from it. Attacking it can cause reaction and the attack on it is part of the bourgeoisie principle dissolving myths of origin. But once broken fabricating some romantic vision of it to force on society is revolutionary romanticism (which generally gets called fascism) A better way is to see the myths brokenness and then either to choose to participate and draw support from it knowing it is broken or to leave it because of its brokenness. Recognizing that one doesn’t have to force either option on others.

WAR CRIME GIGOLO posted:Hahaha nah we've been making socialist countries suffer for 80 years without ever stopping. Well on this Trotsky had a point. Even as far back as the 1900s it was evident that capitalism would always become a global force that integrated itself across international lines and would no longer be contained individually between countries. For socialism to succeed it had to spread the revolution until it encompassed the planet. Sadly it didn't work out, and the socialist countries that turned inward found themselves excluded from international trade, became closed authoritarian societies and eventually everyone of those societies that collapsed ran as hard and fast as possible to crony capitalism and never looked back.

Gumball Gumption posted:If all Republicans are fascists then Biden should really be removing them from any seats of power when he has the chance but keeps choosing not to. This seems more important and like a more important discussion about the idea of "All Republicans are fascists" than severing with your family or not. Who cares about severing from your fascist enabling relatives when the elected officials of your own party do the same. I'd like to hear how Biden has the power to remove most Republicans from seats of power. Unless this is about Jerome Powell, in which case he's clearly a boring but relatively competent Fed chair, same as Yellen and Bernanke, so why bother.
