Again a very likpatous story
They're not wrong that members of Congress get better health care than the average person, because they are rich, important people who are given priority in treatment and can afford the best doctors in the country. If Mitch McConnell fell down the stairs and broke his leg, he wouldn't sit in the ER for half an hour waiting for a bed to open up like the rest of us would.

It just seems like people who post those memes think that somehow this treatment is being paid for with ARE TAX DOLLARS and that members of Congress are getting rich from their salaries, not because of massive bribes and gifts from corporations or just being independently wealthy before they even enter Congress.

My favorite part of this is it was during the Obamacare kerfuffle, and Republicans thought they were being clever putting a poison pill "Congress MUST use Obamacare exchanges for insurance" :smuggo:

And then the Dems called their bluff and for a while Congress and staff were the only ones mandated by law to use the exchanges

Much like a lot of how the US government functions the founding fathers had a good idea but failed to see the consequences of it.

Having average pay for being a member of the government makes sense on its face because you don't want people becoming politicians because they want to use it to get rich. This is a good idea.

The problem was how election campaigns became bloated so that only independently wealthy people, or candidates that will bow to the whims of wealthy people can afford to run for office, and how not getting paid much leads to corruption when someone will pay them big bucks to support their pet issues.

Conservatism is a slowly moving goalpost that just lags behind societal norms.

In short, you become a conservative if you don't change your opinions for 30+ years.

Or you fall down the YouTube abyss, whichever comes first.

I guess I'll put this here since so many of the memes/FW>FW>FW poo poo cover it and it's on my mind a lot.

Why are conservatives always the last to know, accept or understand anything?

Like, we legalized gay marriage and nobody had their lives ruined or effected in any way. Society didn't collapse. Weed is slowly becoming 100% legal and nothing is hosed up (except for fallout from totally legal pain killer pill mills that created the opioid pandemic). People are getting vaccinated and Covid 19 rates are receding.

50, 30 or even 20 years ago, people were against interracial relationships and now it's totally normal and few people care. Democrats have been elected everywhere and no one has come to take your guns, put you in a FEMA camp, put a micro chip in you or done a socialism. None of them mention GWB or the Iraq war and the poo poo that got us into that back when these same people were calling me a terrorist sympathizer. Obama wasn't a Socialist Muslim plant with no birth certificate.

Like, even most Republicans and conservatives NOW don't give a gently caress about gay or interracial marriage but, man, they had to be dragged kicking and screaming into societal evolution and only just ten years ago for the gay one and within my lifetime for the interracial thing. The memes and car decals were "Marriage = Man + Woman" and "Adam and EVE not Adam and STEVE". Do they just forget? Give up?

Banning plastic bags hasn't hurt anything. U.S. oil production hasn't dipped and has actually increased. People are getting sex changes and the biggest controversy mostly involves sports and the Olympics. The military budget remains obscenely bloated.

Not too long ago, there was extreme opposition to women and gays serving in the military, being teachers, working in hospitals, being scout masters or babysitters and all sorts of dumb poo poo. Nothing they worry about ever really comes to pass and, even if it does, it doesn't ruin anything. So they get their asses in a sling about non existent voter fraud, a nebulous War on Christmas, social media companies enforcing rules and Pledging to the Flag in school or some dumb bullshit. Safety rules for football players that make people "soft". Vaccinations and masks being tyranny. Minimum wage increases haven't ruined cities.

Sorry...:words:...

I dunno. I just get tired of constantly dragging these people by their (red) necks into the 21st century all the time and having to listen to them bitch about poo poo like not saying grace before Thanksgiving Dinner or loudly yelling "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" to me when all they do is accuse others of being whiny and claiming to be victims that wanna take away muh freedumz. Then 20 years later most of them don't even care anymore but them black people need to pull up their pants.

They bitch about big government power yet WORSHIP cops, relish the death penalty and we Always Stand for the Flag!

Years ago I read an essay essentially about the fact that conservatives eventually always lose and afterwards forget that they ever fought in the first place. Once they lose on an issue it just kind of drifts off into the bin of history.

While I share there sentiment, I think you’re making a mistake in thinking that conservatives really internalize and normalize changes.

I’d posit they feel threatened and exhausted by constant ‘woke’ changes that do nothing but inconvenience their lives for no apparent benefit - after all, things were fine before for them.

Part of the ‘problem’ is that there is never enough ‘wokeness’, so they do feel validated in their slippery slope arguments. You’ll think “no poo poo - there’s always more injustice to be tackled”. But if you start with the premise that those are actually no big deal, it’s just a never-ending assault on normalcy from their point of view. That’s where their victimhood comes from, and why it’s subjectively very real.

At best, old conservative views are being repressed as they becomes no longer socially acceptable in a wider circle. Before the internet, you maybe could argue that over time and being isolated, these views would diminish into irrelevance.
Easy as it is to find echo chambers that can reinforce any harebrained idea and isolate you from reality, even that process no longer works, now that they can find any number of like-minded folk that will validate their conservative views.

The resurgence of open bigotry in the wake of Trump should have made clear to all of us that bigotry of all kinds is alive and well, while the suppression mechanism we’ve been counting on is broken due to social media.

Conservatives do not want change. They are creatures of the status quo in society, and want to preserve it. Change the status quo, and you can at best subsume them to pay lip service, while privately grumbling about how the world is going to poo poo.

For many of them everything exists only in the current moment. It's why they sometimes engage in incredible hypocrisy within a single statement or even sentence. When you boil it down it has everything to do with I Am Right And You Are Wrong. Things that prove them wrong either never really happened or they didn't have that view in the first place or that was different than what they were talking about, or that somehow people cheated or any other of a seemingly infinite number of dodges.

Part of it is because for many of them they don't really stand for anything, just against things.

To an extent (and that was a good post btw) but they want to change a lot actually - almost always for the worse. Off the top of my head:

Abortion laws, mandatory school prayer, rapid and vigorous application of the death penalty, dropping nukes indiscriminately on any nation that fucks up or gets in our way, mandatory drug tests for UIE, EBT and welfare receivers...open and concealed carry laws, immigration law, open oil drilling anywhere Exxon feels like it, litmus tests for judges, tort reform. Theocratic (christian) government.

I've heard a lot of conservatives argue for mandatory school uniforms, mandatory military service (poo poo, mandatory GUN OWNERSHIP) and abolishing/privatizing social security.

I realize that some of those things I listed are reactions to changes that have already been made but a lot of those are decades and/or centuries old. After I typed this out though, I realized that you're right and a lot it is "getting back to the old days".

Yeah, I would’ve said you’re describing rubberbanding and proxy issues.

In other words, the status quo they yearn for is sticky (may even be an idealized version that never existed, but some amalgam).

And most things I feel are proxies: it’s not so much abortion, it’s putting women in their place. It’s not so much school uniforms, but putting the youth in their place. It’s not so much religion, but putting ‘others’ in their place.

Being a conservative inherently means being a reactionary. It's less about what you want and what you are trying to stop from happening.

Again a very likpatous story
As shown by The Daily Show ages ago, conservatives desperately want to return to the world of their childhood, because they were completely ignorant of all the problems in the world. The world "made sense" to them because they had no responsibilities and nothing they needed to care about outside of staying out of trouble with their parents. There's also the heavy propaganda being pushed in the mid 20th century about the evils and dangers of communism, and that as long as we stay a free market capitalist society everything will be perfectly fine.

So when they become adults and realize oh poo poo, there's horrible things out here in the world, and everything sucks, it's because this political party saying "Hey we need to fix the problems in society" is causing them all, and the political party saying "We want everything to go back to the way it was in the good old days" will save us.

that's where "it's very hard to make them understand those things" comes in. the violence done by police and military forces to Others is the point, the "modern sissified world" which won't let you hold slaves and get in gunfights while driving is the internal excuse for why the violence by proxy has to be enough

the observation about proxies is very apt. from my perspective what i'm saying is that repressing others is the entire point, and all the justifications which are deployed semantically as being the reasons for why the repression is cool, good, and needed both come later and are ultimately disposable smokescreens rather than anything close to principled positions
