There's a lot of ways to judge a series that doesn't really fit into an adult/child classification. Themes, violence, language, etc are obvious ones, but a series doesn't need to be "sophisticated" to be mature. Tuca and Bertie is definitely adult purely because of its perspective and themes; even if you feel the characters are immature, their immaturity is framed through adulthood, it has no relevance to children even without the sex and swearing. I'm not sure where something like Big Mouth fits into that though; it's written from an adult perspective, but for a formative period that isn't relevant to adults anymore. I guess it's written for adults who've lost touch with what their kids are experiencing? Weird nostalgia for people who thought puberty was the greatest time of their life?

I think the childhood thing is part of the show's metaphor. The conversations these teens have are the kinds of conversations that children and teens are having, but they're also the conversations that a lot of adults have too -- because people's emotional development doesn't really tend to match the rate at which they physically age. A lot of adults are just as underdeveloped as we expect children to be, and, on a wider social level, flashpoints like the Me Too movement indicate that we're not particularly mature as a society either. The show's wedding arc is probably the most obvious case of this metaphor being expressed, given that it's about two children getting married and experiencing the various anxieties and dramas associated with that, but it's there in the Coach Steve character (who is less mature and emotionally developed than most of the cast, despite being one of the oldest regular characters on the show), in the visions Nick has of being an adult (and the way those develop and become increasingly complicated as the seasons go on), the way quite a lot of the parents are actually manchildren, or have arcs that are reflections of the younger generations (e.g. Jessie's mother comes out, but so does Jay, and Andrew is constantly at risk of turning into his father)etc. etc. That and it's the various writers still working through their anxieties and traumas from when they were growing up, but with a more developed perspective and the benefit of hindsight.

Well, that and Hello Nurse. The 90s were trying to redevelop television animation to match classical theatrical shorts, and one of the classic bits that got revived was just male characters losing their loving minds when they see a hot lady. And I think uncritically copying old bits led to some issues because it turns out that some of the bits aged differently and the old theatrical shorts weren't really for children even if some of them were for a broad audience. We only really think of them as kid stuff because that's who ended up watching the reruns of theatrical shorts on TV. Somehow comic books got relegated to being only for children as well.

I watched the first episode of Animaniacs recently, and it was like 1/4 Hello Nurse jokes by content, just a weird overusage of something to the point that it'd have worn it out even if it were funny the first time. The second Warners episode is the one with Einstein, which falls into "not funny because it's not true" that he took himself seriously, and then the third short with H.M.S. Wakko and the pirate was the first really good one. Every line in the first Slappy the Squirrel episode was great, though

The dialogue had the perfect amount of camp, and the fights were overall pretty entertaining. Mark Hamill was expectedly amazing, and Lyn’s power design was great. Pour one out for Fisto. Solar Opposites holiday special is out and of typical SO quality. I enjoyed it, but the dig at Jingle All the Way was pretty funny. Personally, I loved that movie as a kid because of how dumb it was even if it wasn't Kindergarden Cop level.

Centaurworld S2 came out today. I am going to savour it bit by bit. S1 was fantastic, but I could never trust it; watching and waiting for it to turn bad at any given moment. It never did, and that unease added to the experience. Hopefully S2 continues to walk that tightrope.          Major MAJOR spoilers but a favourite bit of animation

It feels like the second half of season 1 rather than a whole new season, which makes sense since they were made one after the other, but I didn't think it was nearly as good. The individual episodes just weren't as strong, it lacks a clear goal like s1 had and it just kinda felt rushed. I get the impression that they wanted to make three seasons but only two were greenlit so they had to make do. They basically spend nearly the entire season focusing on character development and growth for the herd but it didn't really feel earned or satisfying to me. Zulius and Ched in particular basically got nothing, the finale just kinda tells us "by the way these two reached a satisfying conclusion" and we have to roll with it. The songs also didn't seem as great, with a few exceptions (gently caress you, Becky Apples). There were a lot of song callbacks, which is fine when the callback really works (s1 did this to great effect) but I feel that a lot of these would've been better if they were brand new songs. Yeah, I'm a few episodes in and it's not as good; they've plumped for comedy over drama, but once the last few episodes of season one went so dark there really wasn't a way back to low stakes comedy, not the way the show handled it anyway Also, yes, the songs kinda suck. Quite a lot of them aren't straight up songs either, they're people speaking with rhythm. Disappointing.

For a brief moment towards the end of Centaurworld I was convinced they were going to reveal that the Lea Salonga Princess?/Witch? character and Becky Apples were another split centaur like the General/Nowhere King. There was an earlier throwaway joke about the Duchess' grandson's mother disappearing, and Becky ate that old wig she randomly found in the human world.

Centaurworld S2 felt like they were squeezing every drop of blood out of whatever half decent gags they had, to the point where I got tired of some that were actually funny and began actively dreading the appearance of comfortable doug. And they just didn't know what to do with Wammawink anymore. I am glad they satisfyingly stuck the landing though, despite the general raggedness compared to S1.jassa posted:(Centaurworld S2) They really seemed to be going somewhere with Becky Apples, but then just... dropped that whole plot thread.
