A lot of little things to unpack in this one for people not familiar with Japan: Manju are various kinds of bun with bean paste inside. Onsen manju have a cakey exterior and are baked, mizu manju are wrapped in a kind of translucent gelatin and not cooked. The old man is a play on Uncle Jam from popular food-based children's show Anpanman, whose food-person world Chako is riffing on.
