Meanwhile back in 1947 with Parrish and Orr: 1 Orr anticipates Ramirez by 50 years! 2 3 The Trib doesn't think much of Britain going more socialist post-WWII: 4 Nor does it like the Marshall Plan: 5 6 7 8 9 On the other hand, here's an example of a right-wing cartoonist saying no, government is actually good: (It's also an example of cartoon shorthand that has fallen out of style, by the way. The Stetson hat, string tie, pince-nez, and soft leather briefcase all used to be symbols of a politician.) 10 And an example of Parrish's hatred of Europe putting him on the right side for once: 11 (Gosh, I wonder what Parrish is going to have to say about Korea and Vietnam!) And Orr comes out against the draft: 12 Plus there's this, by C. D. Wisdom is not the word that springs to mind when contemplating what drives this country’s citizens to cast their votes the way they do. At best, an election is a collective gut reaction that is derived as much from deep-seated biases and misinformation as by rationality and serious research.

Pretty impressively smug to be a 'both sides bad, I'm a sensible centrist moderate' while still claiming you know better than other centrists to maximise your smugness. Even if you agree that Biden has accomplished all of those things deciding not to support a politician who has accomplished some good things while failing to do other important things is a reasonable position.

lol he made his DASGDC strawman for the left a black woman. She's just so unreasonable, demanding that Biden do more to combat systemic racism against her in society, or that he do more to prevent the planet from becoming uninhabitable.

Alright, I have to ask. Why is the Telegraph cartoon always wrong and frequently the exact opposite of what happened? The coalition talks were remarkably calm compared to normal, the parties agree on a whole lot of things especially on social matters and the remaining stress points are completely normal in a coalition government.

Antigravitas posted:Alright, I have to ask. A few reasons spring to mind: 1) The coalition has somewhat left wing people in it and thus must be terrible 2) Blower and the telegraph fully bought into brexit and everything bad in the uk being the EU's fault, so coupled with those mean europeans not giving the uk everything it demanded after brexit, they have an interest in showing germany as a failing shitshow 3) The UK, with it's First Past The Post voting system, is dominated by two parties and so it's only experience of coalitions is the 2010-15 Conservative/Lib Dem government which everyone hated (Tories because they couldn't 100% Tory all the time and Lib Dem voters because lib dem leader Nick Clegg completely folded on issues his voters cared most about, e.g. university tuition fees). That and the theoretical Labour/SNP coalition touted each election because it would let Evil Nicola Sturgeon demand an independence referendum merely because Scotland voted for a party advocating for one. The UK much prefers Strong Leaders without fully contemplating what the implications of that could be. 4) Blower is a hack idiot moron rear end in a top hat

Some more background info on the Telegraph. It has always been the broadsheet for old, rich, conservatives (earning it the nickname the Torygraph) but has in recent years has gone to poo poo as the owners try to increase ad revenue and decrease staffing cost. They have done this by forming their editorial policy on what they think would please the big spenders, and firing any journalist who objects. They are also the home-paper for Boris Johnson, long before he was Prime Minister (and, amazingly, long after). They had him as a columnist when he was making poo poo up about the EU, and now they are now unabashed cheerleaders for whatever the government chooses to do. e: Skeleton Mom posted:oh no what did jesse ventura do this time be a wrestler from the 80s who the cartoonist remembers.

And since the guy who's watching admits that he knows it's fake it's hard to tell what point the strip is trying to make. Is Jesse Ventura the hero for beating up the woke wrestler? Is it that the woke wrestler and Ventura is just acting out roles? Is it some sort of "bread and circus" metaphor? Alhazred fucked around with this message at 15:49 on Nov 28, 2021 |

Is it that the woke wrestler and Ventura is just acting out roles? Is it some sort of "bread and circus" metaphor? WWF Beltway in the first panel suggests to me it's saying politics is a punch and judy show, where two factions with purportedly conflicting idealogies are actually working for a common goal. Wrestling being fake is integral to the metaphor. I genuinely don't know if Jesse Ventura is being Jesse Ventura, as I've not been following him. Is he still in politics? Is he still in the public eye?

The weird part of that comic is how the first wrestler is a caricature of the left but the other is an actual person who exists. Shouldn’t it be a caricature of a right wing pundit instead? You’d actually have something resembling a point then. I suppose that would require making fun of the right in some capacity though which is why he did this instead.
