Had my first genuine "caused by patching" error, two years after I joined this place and introduced them to the concept of patching servers being important. The kerberos delegation issue in this month's OS update hosed over a script I wrote. A script that keeps the marketing department from spamming us with bullshit IIS changes In the last two years patching has been blamed for so much poo poo, and most times the closest it's actually been is $ShitSystem can't handle a reboot.

Teams or Slack or Discord are one thing. Emails are another. I dont treat them like a chat program. On the upside, I managed to figure out with 80% certainty where $77k in missing material went in Q3. lovely labeling and lovely counting!

Trying to get our outsourced IT department to do something in relating to Azure VMs. They're asking me for VM names, role, and 'the usual information needed'. Do...you think you can clarify this? Or should I just send back random snippets of info until they have what they need?

So my photo is a badly cropped and crooked selfie taken in bad lighting while wearing a black shirt. The entire team is subjected daily to my disembodied head leering maniacally from their teams window.

I guess I’m lucky in that some people know I am a goon and it seems to mean something to them, but it never comes up at work. Makes me feel special to get hot dish or whatever from SA while avoiding complicated goon handshakes. Plenty of the group surfs Reddit though we don’t get too many memes leaking in. I set up the avatar service for our Jabber deployment so I have a copy of everyone’s avatar jpeg - nothing too bizarre out there, sorry to say.

I've been asking for a company GitHub or similar code repository as at lot nore things are getting automated now and it's random Powershell scripts dotted across servers to do various things. Back when I worked at the agency, one of our biggest clients (an interbank network!) was using Visual SourceSafe until at least 2015. It was loving awful. I left at the end of 2014, and thankfully have no idea what they’re using now. Probably Visual SourceSafe.

I've been sitting with my thumb up my rear end for two months waiting for things to happen to make a start on MS VOIP, and basically implemented the bulk of it in an afternoon. It's quite likely I'll have quit and left the business by the time I get to port some numbers. I'm so tired of this small-minded mindset of not wanting to relinquish control over anything, yes I'll need License Admin AzureAD permissions to make things work, yes I'm going to need User Admin if I'm going to have any hope of uplifting us to Business Premium/AzureP1. Why bother hiring an IT admin if you're not going to give the tools needed, it literally would've been cheaper to hire an MSP.

I once worked for a company that had some ancient livestock feed calculator that was developed in house in the 1980s. The veterinary professor who helped with it was long dead and the programmer retired at least 15 years. They kept that thing running in DosBox and it worked pretty well! They didnt try to do to much with it though aside from calculating nutritional info for cows and pigs and what not.
