lil poopendorfer posted:my issue w road design to control speed is that it assumes you're dealing w rational actors that recognize that it's unsafe to drive quickly through those areas. American drivers are far from rational, to put it mildly. In my city we have speed cameras at park-adjacent roads and literally everyone drives the limit. THere's no room for idiots to think "well I'm such an exceptional driver that I bet I can take that curve at a high speed". It's black & white: drive the limit+4mph or get a ticket. the one weird trick with safe road design is to make it so any mistake on the driver's part will cause a ding or scratch to their car. the average car brain treats the vehicle as an extension of their body and will slow down and be careful so as to avoid any damage to themselves

When I was doing my driving exam in Poland the examiner got really mad at me when I didn't run over a pedestrian who walked in front of the car. He very angrily said "if you do that again there will be consequences", verbatim.

My favorite thing when driving is the look of horror, shock, and confusion that comes over a pedestrian when they see me slowing down and stopping for them at a crosswalk or stop sign. It's such a rare event the pedestrian can't seem to process that is is actually happening. If you smile and wave while yielding it confuses people even more, this is extremely abnormal behavior.

it's a little depressing how few pedestrians know to hit the button to get a walk signal. Carbrains will sit there waiting forever thinking it's some kind of "placebo" button

The pedestrian crossing buttons were all automated in the Brisbane CBD so people don't have to touch them and get covid germs.

Generally in the states if there is a button the crossing signal is not automatic( at least in Oregon and California... I am starting to suspect that many of the Vermont ones are automatic)

There are a lot of flashing yellow pedestrian death zones that cross the middle of the street around here, it does not matter if you push the button or do not push the button people will usually not stop for you because they have no idea what these zones are. There is a story about someone getting run over in these "crossing zones" like every 2 weeks

lmao it looks like drivers wont even be able to see peds in the crossing until they crested that hill back there, great design. Why not just put a traffic light, or a below surface or above surface crossing, or like literally anything that might not get people killed edit: here have some bad driving as a treat. Love the constant theme of even the people who are in the right still refuse to just stop their car and be safe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCZ9o94a_m4 Jokerpilled Drudge has issued a correction as of 14:16 on Dec 1, 2021 |

The pedestrian sometimes can't even see the car behind, they are confident and happy because traffic is yielding to them. This happens so often, you can just set up a chair and wait for the chaos to start.

I usually just jaywalk instead of using these. I'm actually more in control of my crossing that way and can do so when there are no cars. On the occasions I do use them it's because I'm feeling sassy and want to make the cars stop.

Love when you have to physically block the other lane with your car to prevent people from running down kids in a crosswalk

No you press a walk button and there are bright yellow lights that flash at cars to stop, they are called pedestrian death zones around Denver They are also in the middle of the road, not at intersections

In France they don't even require the yellow lights - it makes it way cheaper to install as it's just paint so cities have loads of them. Of course, they are only required in the first place because society has decided that cars should have priority over people in the first place

But yeah there are a lot of locals who know they are supposed to yield for peds and just laugh while accelerating

The lights are there because drivers need big flashing warnings or they'll never yield (they still don't yield anyway though)

It's almost like pure infrastructure fixes that fall short of removing cars entirely aren't sufficient to confront sociopathic drivers who choose to ignore them

my favorite is when they let the zebra crossing completely fade so pedestrians familiar with the crossing now have to contend with car drivers who can't see it

The lights are always on to tell drivers "this is the 0.5% of the road where you don't have priority"* so they're meant to pay attention. *technically I think pedestrians already on the road always have priority over drivers, it would be kind of nuts if that wasn't the case, but these are where you're meant to cross
