People paying American dollars to let other people know they didn't agree with someone's position on something is the lifeblood of these forums.
The one thing I'm still having trouble understanding going into year 3 of covid is why new york got their clocks cleaned so thoroughly when this all started. Was it just a complete lack of NPI's and a naïve population? Why didn't we see anything quite that dire in other major US metros?

jesus christ lol gently caress everything

pretty sure that's not how r0 works, because it's exponential, not linear.

the sequence for an r0 of 20 is 1, 20, 400, 8,000, 160,000, 3,200,000, 64,000,000, 1,280,000000, everyone on earth 3 times over. small changes in the effective or theoretical reproductive number get huge after a few generations, the number doesn't have to start out big.

even adding .3 to the effective R number is devastating, and doesn't require covid being rocket powered measles.

The initial circulation of COVID in metros was really, really, really bad.

It was India numbers happening in the US, but we had no infrastructure to measure it. I'm not sure we've hit that peak again, maybe Thanksgiving 2020 but even then

i think R0 20 was the theorized "upper limit" which still tracks.

17 or 18 is close enough to be incredibly worrying

I like that quip, but it’s also a good question.

Background here is that NL63 is a “common cold” coronavirus that binds to ACE-2, same as SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2.

Is the implication here that it's mutating into the common cold but with 1.5% or so IFR? Just endlessly spreading all year never building good protection and rolling the dice with each infection. School completely impossible to run as teachers are killed at a higher rate than any other profession...

Meanwhile my dept is still planning to hold our mandatory end of the year meeting in person next week, but instead of at the gross hospital it will be at a local restaurant and we each get 1 free alcoholic drink, isn't that amazing everyone :downs:

This common cold coronavirus sticks itself to your cells with the metaphorical equivalent of spitting on paper and slapping it onto the fridge.

SARS-CoV-2, in contrast, is a bigass neodymium magnet.
