Yeah exactly what I meant. I would take it a step further and say your goal should be to know what your composition will look like before you even look through the viewfinder, and so the part where you change the settings and the camera goes to your eye and the exposure happens, is the fastest part of the process.

On that topic, what I found was incredibly useful for that was to go to the same place repeatedly, each time with a different prime. At one point I grabbed a 105 and I was shocked at how much I was seeing things differently just by having it with me.

That looks like a Blender render. You know, in a good way. Where do you find these places?

Yeah unfortunately they were unavoidable without multiple exposures and I didn't bring my tripod this time. Murphy's Law - every time I bring a tripod on a hiking trip I don't end up needing it and have to lug a lot of extra weight and awkward bulk around for several days for nothing. When I leave it at home I end up missing it. I don't actually hate the blown highlights in this shot though. Normally they'd be grounds to delete the shot but for this one I felt they gave the scene a sort of otherworldly glow which I actually kind of like. And yeah it was a great track! I'm pretty sure I missed a bunch of awesome vistas on the second day too, very poor visibility and it was raining almost non-stop; had to keep my camera in my pack for most of the day.
