On top of everything else said here about the guy, I also remember hearing he was president of Japan's equivalent of the RIAA. So you can thank him for Japan's draconic music copyright laws.

The organizations Sugiyama belonged to specifically were the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers, and Publishers notable for such things as trying to collect copyright fees from music schools, and the Japan Institute for National Fundamentals, which as you might guess from the highly suspect name was a think tank for Nippon Kaigi, the big ultra-nationalist party that wants to rewrite the Japanese constitution to allow for a standing army and legality for human rights violations. Sugiyama didn't just have "views" or "opinions" (not that this vile poo poo is ever just an opinion) but he actively put time, money, and effort into making the world a shittier place for anyone who isn't a straight old Japanese man gently caress him and gently caress his legacy.

So who's a good pick to replace him? My first thought is Yoko Shimomura.

In fact I will enjoy Dragon Quest even more now that this motherfucker is dead and can no longer materially benefit from the series.

Yeah I believe the guy who will replace him is Hayato Matsuo, who worked on Ogre Battle and Shenmue and a few songs in FFXII. I think he’s pretty alright from the stuff I’ve heard. With that said, I think it’d be best if they had an all star team tackle a future Dragon Quest. It’s a goddamn cultural institution, let a bunch of big names like Soken and Shimomura and so on go apeshit on the series.

Square Enix can just pay Masashi Hamauzu to take over Dragon Quest and that would make me pretty happy. Bonus boss tracks by Soken.

I'm playing Dragon Warrior VII for the first time, playstation version. I'm really bummed I missed out on this when I was younger, this would have been right up my alley at 15 when it came out. It reminds me of earth bound a lot in the writing and the way the NPCs move around. I mean I know EB is a DQ clone but this feels like it was translated by the same guy almost. I'm very excited that this game is supposed to be over 110 hours long, this is a very fun time. So far I'm at the second town where everyone was turned to stone, and I went ahead to a dungeon that doesn't seem necessary to the plot of this area. It's nice having something like a side quest after having only played 1-4+11, and coming right off of 3 for my first time. I was debating playing this or 5 first, and I think I made the right choice. Still looking forward to playing 5 some day. Should I worry about leveling in this at all? Is this game pretty easy, or should I not overlevel? Using an emulator and fast forward through most battles that aren't bosses, to cut the tedium of random encounters, and it seems pretty easy so far.

The game isn't too hard, I played through it last time with everyone but the Hero on AI control at basically all times and did just fine. You actually don't want to grind too much because each area has a level cap that will make getting job levels more difficult later.

It's one of the easiest DQs. There is a TON of stuff to do in the game so if you decide to complete a lot of the content you're going to be over-leveled but it's not like you'll steamroll all the bosses. Just have fun and do whatever seems fun at the time.

Hell yeah this is a great chill out after work game then. By level caps, do you mean I'll be restricted from levelling further than say level 10 in the area I'm in, just as an example? Like I'll stop accruing exp or is there some indication I'm at cap? I'm really loving this game, I get why it sold so well in Japan and was overlooked in the US at the time. It's the most dragon quest of all the dragon quest games I've played, and that wasn't the style at the time here. But drat this game rips. I've been saving my seeds per a suggestion from a friend until the end of disc 1, I'm guessing that's about the time I'll find my last party member? Should I just blast all these seeds into the hero rather than hold them?
|
# ? Dec 6, 2021 07:25 |

I usually have the Hero scarf most seeds, yeah. It's easier than holding on to them, the bonuses are worth more in the early game, and the Hero is a party member you're fairly certain will stick around, so you're always getting the benefits.

# ? Dec 6, 2021 07:39 |

Personally I always minmax. I save seeds until 2/3 or 3/4 into the game and then distribute them based on primary role. Fighters get STR and DEF and HP, mages get MAG and MP, etc. It's also perfectly fine to just feed them all to the Hero but I feel like that's overkill.

I give seeds to whatever party member is active at the time with lowest stat value of whatever the seed is, because I like to protect my friends.

Once you unlock the Job system, NPCs will tell you you need to fight X number of battles to level up your current Job, but fighting weak battles won't count (so you can't, like, go back to the first area with combat and just grind out every Job). Each area has a Job experience level cap, where once you pass that level the battles will no longer count towards leveling Jobs. However, every new location on Disc 2 has a level cap of like 99 so it's really not an issue you need to worry about.

DQ11 has a hard mode, it's not insanely difficult but you might at least need to think about what you're doing in boss fights. They even had to nerf a few parts when they ported it to Switch and PC.
