So the short answer is we don't know since it would be really hard to actually study treatment without raising lots of ethical concerns. However, sex offenders that are in treatment tend to have the lowest recidivism rates while on parole/probation supervision.

There is some research that pedophilia is analogous to a sexual orientation, that basically you can't make a pedophile any less likely to commit sexual assault or look at CSAM than you can make a closeted gay man not look at gay porn or tapping in the bathroom which as we know is loving unlikely. It's really a hosed up problem when you think about it, if you buy into the concept, we have a group of people that can't change who they are and who they are is completely incompatible with existing within our society.

Because we pretty much always wait until they commit a crime before doing so, but if we find out someone is sexually attracted to children, we kind of have an obligation to remove them from society before they commit the crime because they crime they are almost inevitably going to commit is so horrific.
