What’s the point of courtroom sketch artists anyways? Like, do most courts still pay for a sketch artist, or is it only for sufficiently “big” cases? Or do sketch artists just like to show up to random court cases and draw people?

Sketch artists are used in jurisdictions where cameras are not allowed in the courtrooms.

They're either employed by media organization or sell their sketches to them. So they mainly cover cases were there's some sort of newsworthiness but no cameras are allowed.

Does this have anything to do with the major AWS outage?

Yes, it turns out that the US East servers for New World were tied to the stuff that went down, it wasn't actually a New World specific problem.

I grew up out in the country, and it was always super fun making the old dead tree into a giant bonfire after Christmas every year. Having a ginormous decorated one looks rad as hell :black101:

Very cool that they seized seventy thousand dollars.

They’ll put that forty thousand dollars into the evidence vault and win a civil asset forfeiture case against all ten thousand dollars.

The assumption is that the only use for large* amounts of cash is crimes. If you were doing something legal, you'd be using a bank or some other secure transfer. Them seizing it prevents a crime, and of course, if there wasn't a crime, you can always just get it back!

but really:

It costs money to get that money back, and they know it; so many people just have to lose it. Many police departments actively rely on this as a revenue stream, so of course, they fight tooth and nail any change to civil seizure.

Also the current Supreme Court is unlikely to agree that anything cops do is less than perfect.

It's technically done as part of a civil case against the property which lowers the burden of proof. The Supreme Court upheld it back in the 90s.

Theoretically it brings the standard from “guilt demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt” to “preponderance of evidence”.

It just has to be more likely than not that it’s crime money, as determined by the totally impartial courts.

There's a town somewhere in Sweden where they've put up a big straw goat every christmas since 1966. Much to the chagrin of the organizers, it's been burned down 37 times.

quote:

In 1996, the Southern Merchants introduced camera surveillance to monitor the goat 24 hours a day. On 27 November 2004 the Gävle Goat's homepage was hacked into and one of the two official webcams changed.[18] One year, while security guards were posted around the goat in order to prevent further vandalism, the temperature dropped far below zero. As the guards ducked into a nearby restaurant to escape the cold, the vandals struck.[14]

Serious note: it sounds like the person who started the fire is homeless and has a history of mental health and drug abuse issues, so I'm sure Fox will hype up something about antifa supersoldiers and the War on Christmas.
