With Chinese Characteristics Website: https://withchinesecharacteristics.com What it's about : We talk about topics with Chinese characteristics, whatever they might be. We also try to be funny sometimes but usually fail. These are usually history related. We just started season 3 (an arbitrary distinction, these are very short seasons, we might remove this distinction all together...) Genre: Chinese History, Politics, and Culture also a bit of comedy RSS Feed | iTunes | Stitcher | Spotify | Twitter Latest Episodes: Episode 26: Fake It Till You Make It (They Made It) - Democracy in Taiwan https://www.withchinesecharacteristics.com/episodes/episode-26-democracy-in-taiwan From Ming Empire remnants, to anti-Japanese rebels, the Island of Taiwan has a long history of self determination. When the remnants of the Republic of China fled the mainland to Taiwan in 1949, it was a republic in little but name. With corrupt elections, single party politics, and a byzantine electoral process, the average citizen had little chance of influencing politics. In this episode we discuss the long, painful, and often bloody road by which Taiwan (ROC) exited martial law, reformed its politics, and created what is now possibly the most progressive and vibrant democracy in Asia (if not the world!). Episode 27: Coming In Arrogance: The British Macartney Embassy https://www.withchinesecharacteristics.com/episodes/episode-27-the-british-macartney-embassy By the late 1700s, the United Kingdom was by far China's largest European trade partner. Millions of tons of Tea, Porcelain, silks, and other goods came from China every year on British ships, creating vast wealth both in trade, and in taxes, for the Crown. Despite this, relations with the Qing court remained, as ever, frosty. To remedy this a grand embassy was sent from London to Peking, in order to cement a deeper relationship (and acquire a large number of financial and territorial goals). Despite its lofty goals, arrogance, cultural misunderstandings, and simple overreach would plague the mission, perhaps even dooming it from the start. Supplemental Reading: A Narrative of the British Embassy to China in the Years 1792, 1793, and 1794: Containing the Various Circumstances of the Embassy, with Accounts of Customs and Manners of the Chinese and a Description of the Country, Towns, Cities &c. &c Episode 28: A Brief History of Pandas, Part 1 https://www.withchinesecharacteristics.com/episodes/episode-28-a-brief-history-of-pandas-part-1 Despite their superstar status today, Pandas has spent most of history in relative obscurity. Living in remote, bamboo covered hills, they were rarely seen, and even more rarely recorded. However with the explosion of westerners entering the country in the late Qing dynasty, came hunters, 'zoologists' and others interested in killing or capturing Pandas. These interlopers would for better or worse, catapult the Panda onto the international scene, and for a brief period they could be found in Zoos across the world. In this first of a 2 part series, we discuss the history of Pandas from time immemorial to the dawn of the People's Republic of China (1949). Episode 29: The Most Political Animal, Pandas Part 2 https://www.withchinesecharacteristics.com/episodes/episode-29-the-most-political-animal-pandas-part-2 Its 1949 and Pandas are more popular than ever. Within Communist China, they achieve a rock star status, they appear on every product imaginable, and fuel attempts at scientific reform. Outside of China, as Pandas die in captivity one after another, they become the poster child for conservation and the highest prize imaginable for zoos to obtain. As China normalizes its relationship with most of the world Post 1972, Pandas would continue to be many things to many different people, National Symbol, Conservation Project, Money Maker, and Political Bargaining chip. Supplemental Reading: The Last Panda by George B.Schaller Panda Nation: The Construction and Conservation of China's Modern Icon by E.Elena Songster Episode 30: Prequel to The Opium War - Less Silver, More Problems https://www.withchinesecharacteristics.com/episodes/episode-30-prequel-to-the-opium-war The First Opium War is often seen as the beginning of China's 'Century of Shame' , a time when Foreigners ran rampant, and China lacked the ability to set its own destiny. However even without the aggression of Great Britain, China (Qing Dynasty) was undergoing a series of internal crisis, each with the potential to end the dynasty. Rebellion, Inflation, Ethnic Tension, Failures of Government, Piracy, and waning military power, all seemed to strike at once, and help explain why the Qing Dynasty would be so ineffective against the British during the 1840 Opium War.

I do more shows than I really should, and if you want a full catalog, it is here. But today I want to talk about two: Boku no STOP! Website | RSS Genre: Anime discussion/critique Release Schedule: Biweekly BNS is an anime podcast two buddies and I record which goes in seasons: we'll cover and critique one show at a time, and until this current season, they flowed one out of the other in a chain of Neon Genesis Evangelion > Space Runaway Ideon (a series Eva borrowed plenty from) > Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier (a similarly flawed but seminal work), and now we're onto Naoki Urasawa's Monster... but for the second anniversary this week, we returned to where we began with a three-hour deep dive on Eva 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon a Time, and the Rebuild series as a whole now that it's a completed work. We've got surprises in store for this one, but we're going to be on Monster until sometime next year, so I'll be back to advertise that later. Gotta Get Out Of This Town Website | RSS | Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts Genre: A chronological musical journey Release Schedule: Weekly (on summer break until September) Three queers and a quixotic idea: we took down everything tagged as pop-punk, emo pop, or ska on Rateyourmusic.com from 2000-2013, organized them chronologically, chopped off anything that didn't make the Billboard charts during that period (no matter how low! Just had to show once!) and we're journeying through them in order. The twist is one of us* is old and never engaged with this genre growing up, one is Italian, and the third is younger than some of the albums we've discussed but grew up listening to the music in question. If you want a sample of how far off the rails this goes, good news. we created one! I'd recommend picking an album you know and popping in to try if you want a slice of our personalities. * The one writing this

Oh speaking of, my podcast, Fallin' Thru Plotholes! Normally we talk about various videogame plotlines and how they evolved over time and got crazy, but we did something a bit different and had an episode on general video game history. It's part of a bunch of episodes that I'll have on backlog in case something happens, and I would really appreciate getting feedback on what works, what doesn't and the like. I'm pretty proud of it, and it's going to be the latest episode (Universal vs. Nintendo.) Fallin' Thru Plotholes What's this about : Fallin' Thru Plotholes is a podcast about video game plotlines, how convoluted they can be and how their development cycles can influence these stories. We'll talk about the people behind these stories, and try to make sense of something that is often very senseless. RSS | Apple Podcasts | Podbean |Youtube Genre: Video Games, Media analysis. Kind of comedy? Duration: 1-2 hours per episode Release: Every two weeks unless an episode is multi-part, then every week. Releases typically on a Tuesday. Episode 10-2: Metroid: Other M is a complete mess: In part 2 of our series on Metroid, Alex and Michael talk Metroid Fusion, a very good game. Oh, and there's the mess known as Metroid: Other M, which deals with A LOT of parental issues. Episode 10-1: Metroid is a masterclass in environmental storytelling until it isn't: In part 1 of a series about Metroid, Alex and Michael talk about the atmosphere and story of Metroid, Metroid II and Super Metroid, and learn all about scary space jellyfish and dragons. Episode 9-2: Tekken goes from fighting tournaments to brutal corporate wars: In part 2 of our miniseries about Tekken. We learn how to fake our deaths, get introduced to more wacky members of the Mishima family, and learn why it's a bad idea to kill a demon by starting World War III. Episode 9-1: Tekken is about family therapy and the Devil: In Part 1, Alex and Michael tackle Tekken, a series about a father who just doesn't understand his son, and their powerful world-dominating company. lovely Mashups Genre: Comedy, Music, Sci-Fi We're getting drat near close to our 1 year anniversary so I just thought it might be appropriate to post here again. Basically each episode has 2 of the hosts each create a musical mashup based on a given category. They aren't always good but we have a lot of fun with the premise. Believe it or not we've all been musically trained we're just dedicated to only using our training for evil. There's also a sci-fi B plot that we have a lot of fun making up. We also usually make video accompaniments for the mashups. We're on every podcast platform that we're aware of. Website | Twitter | RSS | Apple Podcasts When we made it we didn't know there was a subreddit called shittymashups, we aren't affiliated with it in any way, but since we have more listeners than they have subscribers we don't really care to change it. The Latest Episode involves making mashups based around voice overs like movie trailers, monologues, stuff like that. Pretty fun.

The Impossible Archive iTunes | Twitter Genre: History/paranormal Release schedule: Roughly monthly "The Impossible Archive" is hosted by two historians, Bill Black and Eddie Guimont (myself). The podcast is about us, as professional historians, navigating (in a very loose format) how to explore both the history of "weird things" in general through the viewpoint of historical training, as well as how historians broadly should view such topics. While not believers, neither do we consider ourselves hardcore debunkers, but an approach that I view as sympathetic skepticism. Episodes released so far include an interview with fellow historian Kate Dorsch on the history of Project Blue Book; with astronomer Horace A. Smith on the book he and I are writing on H. P. Lovecraft and astronomy; and a review of Halloween III with conspiracy journalist Robert Skvarla. Outside of our interview episodes are several on the Pentagon UFO reports from this summer; a review of the newspaper letters to the editor of the 1920s crank Ole J. Sneide; ghosts; and how the megalodon became a cryptid.

Ephemera, the storytelling podcast about "things that could've only happened Online", has released several episodes since I last posted in this thread, and two episodes since my 'I'm a covid healthcare worker and don't have time for this' hiatus. I feel safe saying, "I'm back". Genre: Storytelling/NPR Duration: about 30 minutes a month The show's website URL: http://storiesfromtheinter.net RSS URL: http://ephemera.libsyn.com/RSS First, there's E22: Basically, no-one knows if HFT is good or bad., which discusses financial crime and a particularly notable incident of millisecond timestamps being incredibly meaningful to solving a mystery. Basically, if you love stories about finance AND stories about fibre optic cable, this is for you. E23: viral, I released just as Omicron was announced by the WHO as a variant of concern. It's therefore, obviously, only concerned with pre-Omicron stories about data and the "infodemic" that mirrors and follows our global pandemic. E24: Talking animals, released yesterday, discusses the psychic togetherness the Internet affords us as cyborgs, and asks whether or not there are similar psychic parallels between humans and nonhuman animals (with a brief closing detour into pseudoscientific attempts to communicate with profoundly mentally disabled adults). Please enjoy. Thank you.

Native plants, animals, and techniques which had already long been known to others were 'rediscovered' by Europeans and mass produced across their colonies on an industrial scale. kind of tangential to the topic, how are most people promoting their new podcasts? I had the vague idea of trying one out (as most ideas men go) but no idea the first thing about putting it out there

I had the vague idea of trying one out (as most ideas men go) but no idea the first thing about putting it out there For myself, it's been a lot of yelling about it on social media, and mentioning it on my (admittedly small) Twitch stream. That being said, my biggest boost was actually paying for advertisements on podcast hosting sites, such as Overcast. I'm not entirely sure it was worth it (it was like, $400 for a month) but it did boost me from 8 listeners to about 25 consistent listeners per episode, so it did work to some extent. Helpful if you feel awkward about consistently promoting your podcast yourself like I was.

Gertrude Perkins posted:[url=https://flashinthepancast.com/] I double-taked on the "was Arfenhouse even real" banner ad and it led me here. I don't really listen to podcasts but I'm going to set aside free time to listen raptly. Arfenhouse was like the inside joke to end all inside jokes and shaped my grammatical patterns and worldview to this day, and typing that makes me sad, but I'm crazy curious about the cast. Edit: dear lord I will pay for advertising if you can get word out about some old-rear end All Your Base MP3s that disappeared decades ago, I can provide details but please let me sponsor the cast if you're willing to do like 30 second bits on these songs I'm looking for MJP fucked around with this message at 00:32 on Mar 15, 2022 |

Howdy goons! I recently successfully funded and printed my first game, DEAD IN THE WEST! To celebrate I've GM'd a few episodes of an actual-play podast called RPG Roulette, a miniseries called "Martingale". The show has been extremely fun to record. Players are getting really into character, he plot is filled with loads of great twists and turns, and there's been this overall great mix of fun on the part of the players and drama and tension in the story. It's set during the Big Die-Up, which is a really interesting period of the Old West I was thrilled to set a story in. If you wanna listen, the podcast is available on Appe Podcasts here! If you understandably hate Apple, you can also listen here. Or Spotify. Also I run a small, kinda popular Youtube channel called Infranaut where I've uploaded the first two episodes. This was really, really fun to record and I've had a few folks tell me they really enjoyed the podcast. If you like what you hear, please consider throwing these guys a rating/review, as I'm sure they'd appreciate it. The story I'm GMing is a mini-series that'll be about five episodes and I can't wait for folks to hear the third and fourth in particular. Give it a listen and lemme know what you think!
