Oh look, the consequences of my prior actions are finally catching up to me.

lets hang out posted:

DQ11 has a hard mode, it's not insanely difficult but you might at least need to think about what you're doing in boss fights. They even had to nerf a few parts when they ported it to Switch and PC.

I'd say once you start combining them it makes the game rather difficult.

If you want some real punishment, put them all on.

No fleeing from battle, no shopping, no armor, reduced exp, super strong enemies, shypox/super shypox and party wipe if Hero goes down would make the game quite hard.

That's less "challenging" hard and more "tedious" hard. Especially shypox RNG.

Harder monsters is the only challenge that is any fun, the rest are just for completionists, but without harder monsters they arent really a big deal at all.

DQ6 DS/mobile was pretty challenging. There's this one multi-phase boss gatekeeper that's comes before a lot of the job class abilities so it's really rough.

I abused the Casino in that game to grab a few Kerplunk Bracers and stick them on my B-Team in the caravan. When the last character died, everyone besides that guy got a free res + full heal.

I can think of two for sure

One is definitely a forced loss, right when you get into the town of skill robbed people and the town leader puts you in your place doesn't matter what you do
Then there is one where you have to last for so many turns i thiiiink maybe and then lose? which is the two jerks in the cave

Yeah the two jerks in a cave I don't know if I survived long enough. I don't know if the one guy robbing a priest when you first show up is unwinnable but god drat did it put me down.

I'm really, really enjoying this game, and I think it's my favorite Dragon Quest so far, but to be fair I haven't played V, VI, or IX, and only got as far as the boat in VIII. Although I am pretty intimidated by picking classes once I'm out of here, outside of FFV and FF Tactics I've never really played much with job systems so I'm pretty sure I will be hitting choice paralysis soon.

I'm on disc 2 of a replay of 7 myself and have been quite enjoying it but it absolutely does drag in bits. At least if there's ever a section you're not super into you know there's gonna be a new tablet with a new island just around the corner, and it's consistently fun returning to the present versions of locations to see what's up

Dragon Quest game announcements and actual release usually have one or two major life events happen in between. Ask that guy/gal you're seeing to marry you. DQXII will release when your first child is going to Kindergarten.

Yeah, AFAIK there's no actual news on DQ12 yet, which has caused people to go absolutely insane and make a game up whole cloth, like what happened with SMTXFE before TMS#FE was announced. It's gonna be edgy, it's gonna be an ARPG, according to the Internet it's gonna be a lot of things that it makes no sense for them to do with DQ, a historically "safe" franchise. Hell, it took them 30 years to add in dual-wielding to the franchise, something that's been in Final Fantasy since 1988. For all we know, that "we're going to change things up a bit" sound bite from the teaser back in that DQ not-Direct means they're going to have the protagonist actually talk or something.

They're going to give us the option of a female protagonist, and then act like it's a new revolutionary idea and not something they had in 1988 and then just forgot about for like thirty years.

A few months back they had a Dragon Quest stream in Japan where they announced five new DQ games. A treasure hunting game with Eric and his sister, some mobile trash, DQX Offline, DQ3 Remake, and XI. Only DQ3 and XII got announced worldwide releases. XII was also announced to be a simultaneous worldwide release. I don't remember if the DQ3 Remake isn't getting that treatment.

In fact Offline was the only thing in the stream to have an explicit "Only for Japan" text over its trailer lol

They could’ve let XI’s protag be either gender and change nothing but pronouns. Except it would make Sylvando even more overpowered as support.

Yeah, my point was kinda that without dialogue or a personality, whether the character model has boobs or not is kinda irrelevant.

People absolutely care. Representation has a real effect, which may be hard to understand since 99% of games ever made feature a male protag

Commander Keene

Let me try this one more time, hopefully with 99% less failing to words on my part.

There isn't really any reason for the game to not have gender selection for the protagonist when the only difference to the game would be the character model and pronouns used when characters talk about and around the cardboard standee that is the protagonist in these games. My joke was that they'd do a mandatory female protagonist for the first time in the series... and it'd be basically the same as if the protagonist was male, technically fulfilling their promise to "change things up" while still not having to do a drat thing different.

I was not saying that people shouldn't want a female protagonist in a video game with a silent protagonist, nor was I saying that allowing the player their choice is irrelevant.

I always picked female heroes in DQ III and IV. There are a few armors and helmets that only female characters can equip. As far as I know there's nothing only male characters can use.

There's some low-mid tier male only equipment in DQIII but the strongest two armors in the game are female only.

Honestly even if it were the other way around and there was a bunch of stuff only guys could wear I’d still pick the girl in DQIV cause the guy looks generic and like a tool, especially compared to a cute girl with a killer afro.

The girl in DQIV has some serious "80's exercise video instructor" energy IIRC.

Detective No. 27
Jun 7, 2006

The whole point of the silent protagonist is that you're supposed to project yourself into them. It's why I'm certain that being able to pick their gender adds to that.

Even in YA books where the protagonist has to speak they keep their personality and emotions to a mostly blank slate.

The weird thing is they showed DQX Offline on the global stream but not thew other Japan-only stuff the Japanese stream had, so maybe they're thinking of putting DQX Offline out as a global title if the interest is there.

What gear is male-only, something added to the remakes?

DQ3's SFC remake also had a much more powerful/stat-gaining personality that female characters could start with as well.
