You might have solved a 40-year-old mystery for me. My mother was German, her family being from the far north, and while I'm slightly mad I didn't learn German as a second language as I grew up, she did teach me a little here and there (but I showed no real interest, much to my current dismay). Anyway, she taught me to pronounce ich like a cat hissing but when I had to do German in highschool the teacher always corrected me to say it more like ick. I thought I was going mad, and my mother had died by then so I couldn't ask her about it.

Much later I thought it might have been a regional dialect thing, but never investigated it.

Could have been the teacher's inability to pronounce it right. Both the smooth and rough "ch" sounds that German has are difficult for US speakers for some reason. Saying "Ick" is kind of a shortcut to saying it right.

Slow speeds can create a false sense of security. Having that thing whip around like an aircraft propeller creates a very obvious "gently caress off" zone.

I ain’t saying it’s safe, just that at the very least, being able to place the log in a controlled fashion is somewhat better than the comical windmills of death we so often get.

But yeah, that thing still hungers for flesh, obviously.

I really do need something like this but don't want to lose my hands either trying to jury rig something together or by using it. Is there a somewhat safer alternative? I have a huge pile of logs to get through and chopping with an ax doesn't work on the gnarled stuff.

Yeah, a hydraulic log splitter. You can rent 'em, if you don't want to buy one. They have the distinct advantage that you pull a lever to drive the wedge. If you want to take a hand or foot off, you'll have to hold the lever throughout.

Right, of course. Which I also need to do. I'll take this to the proper thread in DIY or whatever, but I'm checking for a wood splitter now. Would save myself a lot of chopping before the snow hits!

Chainsaws aren't exactly known for being flesh-friendly, and won't help you split logs. There was a pretty good homemade log splitter earlier in the thread (or in an earlier iteration of it) which had kind of a spring-loaded assist, and looked tolerably safe. Quite a bit of work involved in making it though.

This one, in fact: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LdChUbCUcQ&t=282s. Lots of horrifically unsafe looking ones in that video too.

Edit: The way he keeps ducking under the heavily weighted bar with only a flat cap for protection may make it less safe than previously thought.

The hydraulic log splitter I used had two, widely-spaced buttons that both had to be held down for the ram to move. It'd still be possible to lose a hand to it but you'd have to put actual effort into it.

Do they make those in an upright form factor? Otherwise, if your stuff is small enough to pick up, sure, go for it, seems pretty nice.

Growing up in SE AK in the 80s, I remember my father often splitting rounds that were large enough that the only way to shift them (by hand) was prying them around a bit at a time with a spud bar. Like 12-18" thick and 3-4' diameter. He'd had some custom hydraulic splitter built and absolutely nothing would stop it. Good times.

"like a cat hissing" is the correct pronunciation in high German, though it's a soft "hiss" (tongue in the middle). Swiss German uses a very hard "hiss" for the ch (tongue all the way back). Pronouncing it as ck exists but probably shouldn't be taught to foreigners because it's a regionalism.
