I'm legit glad some people are still pissed off about our (interpret our as broadly as you like) shambolic covid response. I'm about seven layers deep in being tired of people who are tired of people who are tired of our response to covid, and that's not a great place to be also I heard deena hinshaw in a briefing for the first time and realized that if she told me to do X I would immediately look around for the opposite of X. zero trust

If that person makes $15/hr, then they need to prevent the technically-it's-shoplifting-but-lol-just-lol of 300 plastic bags per hour for the store to break even on their employment.

They're probably also there to help when one of the machines shits itself. Probably by walking up to it and shrugging.

They've been doing that at the No Frills near me for at least a year. It's usually the security guard who does it, while wearing his mask below his nose. It's the thing that finally got me to bring my own bags from home.

The no frills near me just has heaps of bags on each self checkout and just kinda asks nicely for you to pay for the amount you used. And not to bend backwards to defend stores that charge for plastic bags, it is like $40 for a box of a thousand bags.

If you're going to make yourself an unpaid scab and use the self checkout I should hope you're at least stealing more than a nickel's worth of plastic bags.

So I used to be a scab that used those self checkouts because they are way faster than waiting inline for the cashier. But sometime in 2021 the local Loblaws started to lock the machine up any time you bought something that got discounted for 50% and you had to wait for someone to come over and unlock the drat thing for you. So, now I just wait for the cashier again.

I was in Food Basics this tuesday, only two checkout lines had cashiers, one of them was the express one. There were 8 self check out machines and they were constantly in use.

Self checkouts are the best, and are pretty much the only way I will shop anymore. Not having to to interact with a human is lovely. And I'm willing to bet that the number of jobs lost due to self checkouts in grocery stores is so minor it could be dismissed as a rounding error.
